  1. European commission is a higher (continent level) authority who are trying to transfer power to national governments. Devolve means to transfer power from a higher level to a lower level government. Appropriate, just like cool cat said, means "to take (to one's own use) by force".
  2. Imagine yourself as the sociologist who wrote a theory. You were called in to court to answer the charge that your new theory was contradicting accepted sociological principles. It is in this case that you would have to answer the charge "by pointing out that it did not in fact contradict accepted sociological principles" Hence the blank should have a word that suggests something that is against accepted sociological beliefs and principles and therefore, "heretical" is the correct answer. The part in the sentence after "that" tells you what the charge was and the part after "by pointing out" tells you how the sociologist responded to the charge.
  3. (i) structural (ii) vernacular (iii) reclaimed The sentence says that the proponents of International Style in architecture build designs that are structurally strong and offer objective designs that are indifferent to location. They simultaneously reject vernacular (regional architecture) and historical styles. Those who view the quality of uniformity in style of architecture (that did not account for vernacular / regional differences) as bland and unappealing have reclaimed it. Note that hackneyed does mean "overused, unoriginal and trite". However, we are looking for a word that indicates that the International style has been redeemed in the eyes of the people who viewed the style as bland or unappealing. The word "subsequently" will indicate that the people who used to have a negative opinion of the style earlier are now supposed to revert it.
  4. Blank 1: B, Blank 2: A The sentence means that demoting Pluto to the status of a dwarf planet was contested and several hundred indignant astronomers petitioned to union to reconsider the decision they had made.
  5. 0 _ _ For a three digit number, hundreds digit can have only 9 possible values (1-9) because if hundreds digit is zero then the number is not a 3 digit number. Case I. Hundreds digit and units digit are same 9 possible values for hundreds digit, the same number has to be at units place. Except the number at hundreds place and zero, tens digit can have 8 possible values. Possible number of permutations = 9*8*1 = 72 Case II. Hundreds digit and tens digit are same 9 possible values for hundreds digit, the same number has to be at tens place. Except the number at hundreds place and zero, units digit can have 8 possible values. Possible number of permutations = 9*1*8 = 72 Case III. Units digit and Tens digit are same 9 possible values for hundreds digit. Since the number at tens (or units) place is different than the number at hundreds digit (otherwise all three numbers will be equal) and since we can't include zero, tens (or units) place will also have 8 possible values for this case. Possible number of permutations will be = 9*8*1 = 72 Adding all the possible permutations we'll get 216 possible numbers. ------ --------- ----------- ---------- --------- ------- I also write the following python code for this problem - it returns 216 elements. result_numbers = [] counter_=0 for n in range(100, 1000): ns = list(str(n)) if '0' not in ns: if ns[0]==ns[1] or ns[1]==ns[2] or ns[0]==ns[2]: if ns[0]==ns[1] and ns[1]==ns[2]: counter_ +=0 else: counter_ +=1 result_numbers.append(n) print ("counter={}".format(counter_)) print (result_numbers)
  6. Let's say that perpendicular of the given right triangle is x, then the base is (40-x) Area of given right triangle will be = (1/2)*(x)*(40-x) You can try this for x = 5, 10, 15, 20 which will have same area value of triangle for x = 35, 30, 25, 20 respectively Out of the four options, at x=20 we'll have the max area of triangle. x=5, Area = 87.5 x=10, Area = 150 x=15, Area = 187.5 x=20, Area = 200
  7. The passage does not state that unemployed will die soon. It says that unemployed have a higher "death rate". Death rate is the number of deaths per 1000 people. Overall I feel that the content was good. Introduction could be better, sentence structures could be better. No spelling mistakes or grammatical errors.
  8. To invalidate the survey, we could include another paragraph that would have the following points - 1. We need to examine whether the surveyed population was a representative sample of the country's population. How was the survey conducted, split of unemployed vs employed people in the survey participants and lastly, what kind of impact was seen on their health and was it observed during their lifetime or only when they were approaching their death? 2. There are lot of things that happen in a person's life in three decades. Is it correct to say that unemployment was the reason that expedited their death?
  9. Moreover, the argument says that because death rate is higher among the unemployed than those with regular employment, those who will become unemployed as a result of the nation’s economy deteriorating will die soon. This line in the essay above is incorrect. The passage does not state that unemployed will die soon, rather it states that unemployed have a higher "death rate". Death rate is number of deaths per 1000 people in a country's population. The passage states that if the government spends more on healthcare and public health initiatives, their deficits will increase which leads to adverse economical conditions and thereby causes an increase in unemployment. This part mentioned in the argument (or passage) is fallacious because government deficit increment does not necessarily imply increase in unemployment. People can find jobs in the private sector enterprises and government can invite foreign investment (or atleast waive barriers to easy trade) to create more jobs in the country. We could also mention in the second last paragraph in the above essay that vague language has been used in the passage. Higher death rate does not explicitly indicate how high. Is it a difference of 5% or 1%? Both instances, in a nation's context, would mean different things. 5% could be more conclusive and decisive whereas 1% will not be. Overall, I feel the content was good. However, sentence structures could be improved and introduction of the essay could have been better. On the positive side, there were no spelling mistakes and grammatical errors
  10. Two years ago, radio station WCQP in Rockville decided to increase the number of call-in advice programs that it broadcast; since that time, its share of the radio audience in the Rockville listening area has increased significantly. Given WCQP's recent success with call-in advice programming, and citing a nationwide survey indicating that many radio listeners are quite interested in such programs, the station manager of KICK in Medway recommends that KICK include more call-in advice programs in an attempt to gain a larger audience share in its listening area. Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation. ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- The objective of the station manager of KICK in Medway is to gain a larger audience share in its listening area and to achieve the same he has decided to adopt the formula of success that worked for WCQP in Rockville. But there are some demographic concerns that he should consider otherwise his decision might not have the impact that he expected and could rather backfire. Firstly, it is not necessary that interests of the audience in Medway are the same as the interests of the audience in Rockville listening area. The station manager at KICK would need to collect more information about the audiences and interests of the Medway listening area itself. Catering to the needs of the customers is always a great business strategy that seldom fails. Therefore, he should determine whether call-in advice programs is really what the listeners of Medway need. He could also go about ascertaining this by understanding what type of programs have worked for KICK (and other radio stations in Medway) in the past. He would then have a better understanding of what type of radio programs to boost on KICK radio station. Another thing that the station manager at KICK needs to determine is the nature of competitors that they have in Medway and the nature of competitors that WCQP had at Rockville. Since the objective is to increase "audience share" in Medway, this would also depend upon the competition they both have in their respective geographies. It is quite possible that the competition at Medway is fierce and KICK is up against wealthy rival radio stations and therefore, he may not see the same proportion of increase that WCQP did at Rockville. The passage also talks of a nationwide survey that indicated many radio listeners were interested in call-in advice programs. Before trusting the conclusions of the survey, it is important to figure out what type of audience was surveyed, how the survey was conducted and whether the surveyed audience is a representative sample of all the radio listeners in the country. If there was any bias involved, it would be better to only focus on the interests of radio listeners in the Medway area and steer their business strategies accordingly. Every business has its own unique selling point on the basis of which they build and maintain a customer base whose interests are aligned with the kind of programs the radio station broadcasts. They create a brand image in the minds of the people on which they tend to maintain the customers. Also, KICK station will have to hire radio jockeys and experts that would be appropriate and have the required skills for hosting call-in advice programs. These are concerns that need to be addressed before trusting the success formula of WCQP. If the strategy fails and KICK build a negative brand image among the Medway audience, it would deal a huge setback to their business. In conclusion, the station manager at KICK should not trust the recipe of WCQP and the results of national survey. He should consider the demands of their existing customers, interests of the new customers they wish to acquire, the labour costs and their own business plans and branding before going ahead with this strategy.
