  1. Hi all, I recently graduated this may and I am looking into attending a PHD program within the next few years, but wanted to get some work experience (and money) first. I posted this before but got no real response. Type of Undergrad: Top 60ish University, Private, but with a good reputation Majors: Statistics and Economics Minor: Psychology Undergrad GPA: 3.85/4, 3.97/4 GPAs for both Stats and Econ Grad GPA: None GRE: 168Q, 163V, 5AW Math/Stat Courses: Calc 1-3 (A,A,A-), Linear Algebra (A), Real Analysis (B), Stat 2 (A), Regression Analysis (A), Mathematical Statistics I and II (A-,A), Data Mining-4000 level Stat Class (A), Analysis of Variance (A), Time Series Analysis (A), SAS Statistical Coding Course (A) Econ Courses: Intermediate Micro (A), Intermediate Mathematical Macro (A), Game Theory (A), Econometrics (A), Financial Economics (A-), Urban Economics (A), Economics of Public Finances Taxation, Expenditure (A, A), Economics of Crime (A-), Economics Thesis course (A) Letters of Recommendation: 3 Professors lined up as of now. All three professors know me well through leadership positions, taking multiple courses, and long hours of office hour discussion over graduate school. First is a respected prof from a top 5 PHD and UG. I'm extremely close with him and know my rec will be amazing. Top 30 PHD. Took Econometrics & and an elective, A's in both, and am also quite close with him. Top 30 PHD. Took theory/math based macro with her, got the top grade in the class, and spoke with her extensively. All three publish extensively in their fields. Research Experience: Did economic research with a department in my school (mostly for one prof) on public policy economics - works councils and unions. Worked about 20 hours/week for first semester, then 10/week for the second. One published paper (through the prof, obviously). The research mentioned above led to my senior year thesis paper as well, which is on unions. Also, will have interned/worked at economic consulting firms for extensive periods of time. Unsure where to put this, but it bolsters my economic researching skills at least. Teaching Experience: Only tutored for statistics for a year, not sure if that counts, but it's here. Looking to assist in some way with an econ professor I'm extremely close with even while working mentioned above. Research interests: I/O, Public Policy, Econometrics My job will pay for my any courses I take, so on top of this being a profile review, I am wondering if there are any additional courses I should/need to take to bolster my application (i.e. PHD Metrics/or graduate level RA). I am also thinking about obtaining my masters before (potentially a one-year through LSE like the EME program) to enhance my chances.
  2. I enjoyed reading this, it’s the cold hard truth. Since you mentioned it at the bottom, I was hoping to get somewhat of a profile review along with future advice from you. I posted one a while back but got no real response. I just graduated from a US uni ranked ~50. Think like BU level. I double majored in economics and statistics (and had a social science minor as well) and had a 3.85 overall gpa along with 3.97 GPAs in both Econ and Stat. Econ Grades: A’s in every class except one elective where I got an A- (important As - Econometrics, Intermediate Micro, and Intermediate macro with math. No grad school courses) Stat Grades: All As except for Mathematical statistics 1 where I got an A- (important As - Mathematical Statistics 2, Time Series Analysis, Data Mining) Math Grades: Calc 1 & 2 - A, Calc 3 - A-, Linear Algebra - A, Real Analysis - B (I never took an intro to proofs course which made adjusting to this class very difficult) GRE: Q/V/AW: 168/163/5 (I could probably bump this up a point or two if needed) Research: RA for 2 professors at my Uni throughout the entirety my junior year LOR: 1 prof from a top 5, 2 from the same top 30. All three publish heavily within their fields and seem to be well respected. Next Year: I’m working at a top economic consulting firm (think NERA/AG/Cornerstone) What schools should I be shooting for and what should I be doing to enhance my chances of a PHD?
