  7. 209 Progress is best made through discussion among people who have contrasting points of view. It is true that progress is best made through discussion among people who have contrasting points of view. It is only when the assimilation of different views of both positive and negative points regarding a issue come together that people are able to decide upon the issue rightly and act further towards its progress. We have had many instances in the past and present when contrasting points of view on a particular problem/issue allowed us to see both the positive and negative sides of it , thereby giving us a better chance to act upon it rightly. When like minded and people with similar views discuss among themselves about a topic, the scope of their discussion is not only limited but also narrowed down and they tend to visualise only one side of the coin. We have had many social reforms in our society where in the revolution just started with a few people coming together and opposing, contrasting the views about the traditions and customs already prevalent in the society. People of India have witnessed the abolition of Sati, a cruel act in which women were forced to jump into fire after her husbands death , which was most prevalent a few hundreds of years ago. All this was possible with the opposition of a select few of the society whose contrasting views triggered of a revolution in the society which ultimately lead to the progress and development of the society. Whether it is scientific field or in a business organisation, or may it be an education system , a lot of emphasis is being given on group discussions, team work and debate sessions. This is because when there is a discussion among people more often contrasting view points come out which help in analysing carefully both the good and bad possibilities of a issue/task and its outcome. The comparision by these two sides of a same topic/issue helps take a wise decision towards successful implementations off the task/project. Even in the process of law making, before a bill is passed as a law in the legislature, it is put under tremondous debate between the ruling party and the opposition party who carefully try to bring out both the positive and negative impact that the law would make on the people of the society. Also in the judicial system, we have seen that a lot of crucial decisions being taken by a jury instead of a individual. However, such type of discussions may prove harmful at times. These discussions may result in a deadlock situation which may prove dangerous. These discussions should be headed under the control of a moderator/arbitrator who controls the discussion to avoid such no-win situations. To conclude, evernthough there are some ill-effeccts of results of discussion among people with contrasting view points, the advantages of such a discussion outweigh the disadvantages far in number and hence should pave the way for progress.
  8. 197 The material progress and well-being of one country are necessarily connected to the material progress and well-being of all other countries. The very concept of Globalisation and Liberalisation reveals that the material progress and well being of a country are connected to the material progress and well being of all the other countries. Today the repercussions of an economic disaster or a natural calamity in one part of the world can be felt all around the globe. Likewise todays world we discuss problems as 'Global Problems' instead of addressing them as problems of individual countries. Technological advances in communication, transportation and science have made our world so small. We may soon witness the concept of Global Village which is fast emerging now. Coming to material progress ,no country is self sufficient in its natural resources which makes it necessary for it to depend on the others. The very fact that each and every country has imports and exports amounting to millions of dollars support this fact. We have seen countries like India which are abundant in natural resources importing technology from technically advanced countries like Japan and the U.S.A. Also countries like the U.S.A. which have plenty of natural resources import man power from the developing countires like India and the China. For example, more than about 25% (app) of the employees of IBM and Microsoft are Indians.Needless, to address about the fact that all the countries in the world depend on The Middle Eastern Countries of Asia for their Oil and Petroleum product requirements. We can still remember the repercussions the Gulf War had on the rest of the world in 1992. Regarding the well being of the countries, today we cannot say that many problems like Global Warming and AIDS are only the burden of individual countries. It has become a responsibility of each and every country to contribute towards the same. We have seen research teams coming together to fight these problems, these research teams consist of experts from many countries. The emphasis is not on the question as to which country has contributed more number of experts to the research team, but the importance lies in the fact that how these research teams are doing in terms of tackling the problem. We have the world body, The U.N.O. of which almost every country is a member. The U.N.O. has made its presence felt in almost every part of the world and we have seen many a times, The U.N.O. offering a helping hand in terms of financial, material & man power aid to countries in the time of natural calamities and crisis. May it be the famine in Somalia and other African countries or may it be an earthquake in any other country. Further, most of the deleterious consequences of some horrified acts of terrorism and the network of drug trafficking are not confined to any particular geographical and these effects are not limited to the boundaries of individual countries. It is for the world as a one united body which should fight against all these evils and make the world a more comortable, stable and a safer place to live. Nuclear radiations also donot recognise physical boundaries, thereby no country can act to its own whims and fancies. However, i would like to take an exception only insofar to state that some factors like the population of a country, a part of its culture and geographical climate are isolated with the world and doesnot depend on other countries to a larger extent. To conclude, it is evident from a number of facts in many areas like business, economy, health..etc that the material progress and well being of a country are by and large connected to the material progress and well-being of other countries. Countries of the world inturn are trying to derive the Synergetic effect wherein the output of the whole is greater than the sum of outputs of the parts.

  11. 179 Many problems of modern society cannot be solved by laws and the legal system because moral behaviour cannot be legislated. The topic very well states that many of the problems faced by the modern world cannot be solved by laws and legal system for the reason that the moral behaviour responsible for these problems cannot be legalised. To start with the very usage of words like 'sorry' , 'please' , 'thanks' cannot be forced by the law eventhough these words have a very high impact on the people in their day to day to activities. It is just the moral responsibility or a reflection of the moral behaviour of a person in doing so. Law can only confine or restrict a individuals physical presence but not his thoughts and perceptions. The very fact that people have a lot of rights in a democratic country restricts the law and puts it into a backseat in controlling the moral behaviour of the people. It is for the people to act justly. A number of Prohibition experiments conducted by the Government to control the consumption of alcohol failed miserably. People never gave up and found new ways of acquiring alcohol inspite of many restrictions from the govt. It is the people who have to understand the ill-effects of alcohol on the society and act accordingly. We have also witnessed a number of cases where people suffering with AIDS are ostracized by the community. Legal system can only help support these people physically/financially but not morally. It is the people who have to understand and act accordingly. One important problem faced by most of the countries is that of Pollution. There are many laws enacted by the Govt. to control pollution. No doubt that these laws are helpful in controlling pollution till a extent but the real control and effect of these laws is put to question. There are factories who would prefer to do away with the rules and regulation by paying up fine/penalty for not adhering to the norms instead of regulating their methods of production because they find it more convenient financially doing so. Air pollution can also be controlled by growing sense of awareness within the people using automobiles say the usage of multi-modal transport whenver possible instead of their personal cars and/or maintaining a sound condition of the engine of the vehicle. Instead law cannot make it mandatory for people to travel only by multi-modal transport system. We have seen wide spread protests and agitations against the use of military power by some countries over other. It is justified for these countries to use power over other countries for the sake of world peace but there are millions of civilians who are affected by these militarty operations. In such situatuions the morality of the war is put to question. In such cases it becomes difficult for people to morally support the operation whereas it may be considered appropriate by the Govt. Less revealed and discussed but there are significant problems of countries spying over others with the help of satellites thereby impinging on the freedom of other countries. We also know about the cold war between countries which had in the past led to drastic situations. There are many countries in the world who are skeptic about the right use of Euthanasia, the act of mercy killing, if legalised. The grave consequences of the misuse of Euthanasia is holding the govt. back. This is because the technicalities of legal system cannot completely assure and avoid its misuse. However, it would be inappropriate for us to undermine the strength of the Legal System. If not because of the legal system, the world would not have been as it is now and would be in a complete chaos. Moreover some areas like the functions of Business Organisations can be tried to controlled and regulated by strict laws giving no scope for immoral activities a place in day to day business. Businesses should not be left uncontrolled to act for their own financial interest on the cost of the society's well being. To conclude modern day problems are hard to solve using only legal systems but it also lies in the morality of the people to act towards solving these problems. As it is sometimes said " u can take a horse to a pond but cannot make it drink water " . Likewise, laws can enforce and help guide people to a extent but the ultimate task of solving the modern day problems lies within the people.

  14. 175 It is always an individual who is the impetus for innovation; the details may be worked out by a team, but true innovation results from the enterprise and unique perception of an individual. The controversy regarding whether it is individual who is responsible to innovation or it is the team which leads to innovation has always been debated. The individuals enterprising spirit and innovative perception has many a time led to astounding discoveries is a fact well proved throughout history. No doubt the individual is assisted by a team to practically implement his innovation but without his unique perception the innovation would never have been possible. Whether in scientific field or business field or in the fields of politics and geography or even in social activities the individual has always made the impact by his creative energies. In the business realm, all the important aspects like the launch of a new product to crucial decisions of mergers and acquisitions are actually brainchild of the CEO of the company. In this process eventhough he is constantly assisted and advised by a group of other executives acting on different functional areas of business, the activities carried on by them basically are towards the goals and objectives set by the CEO. We all know how Michael J.Dell, a student of Chemistry who had a strong interest in computers with his innovative ideas started Dell Computers which today is one of the top 10 companies providing the entire range of Personal Computers to high capacity servers. Needless to quote about Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft who with his innovative ideas has captured major share of the software market. Even in the political realm, we know what wonders a individual can make on the minds of the people of a country. We can still remember M.K.Gandhi who with his ideas of Non-Violence was able to drive out the Imperialistic forces of Great Britian from India. Gandhiji with non-violence as a weapon was able to integrate and influence the people of India who were later successful in driving out the imperialists from the country. Though Gandhiji was assisted by a number of other Freedom Fighters whose services were equally important but it was Gandhiji, The father of the Nation who shaped out the entire freedom struggle. Also in the field of scientific inventions and discoveries, a new idea or a new product is a result of the innovative idea of an individual who further passes it on to a team for further development. We have numerous examples of great scientists giving us new products and ideas. Eventhough people saw objects falling down to the ground when thrown into the air , it was Isaac Newton who was able to observe that there is a force exerted by the Earth on any object on it and hence the fall. It was only after that Newton discovered the gravitational force could other theories evolve in the field of astronomy. However, in modern world, innvoation demands for constant group effort of like minded people working together to make ideas into reality which is in itself a innovative process only possible by the group effort and the importance of this effort shouldnot be under wieghed. There are R&D divisions in many of the Organisations serving this purpose. To conclude, the source of innovation is an individual eventhough the implementation of the innovation can always be supported and developed by a group of individuals of a team. People have witnessed some of the greatest discoveries and inventions by individuals like Thomas Alva Edison, Columbus, Graham Bell, .....etc in the previous centuries and are witnessing the wonders of innovative ideas of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs (founder of Apple), ....etc in various fields. It has been evident from the past that many individuals have created wonders by their unique and enterprising perceptions giving invaluables to the people of the world whose products have been further refined by reengineering process by teams.
