  1. USC is safe, but also expensive. Are you willing to fund your studies?
  2. What is your BE aggregate? And how much is your topper's percentage?
  3. Did you mean Fall 2011? I'm not sure how many schools offer summer admissions. If it's for Fall 2011, then you should take your GRE by October. Most schools have deadlines during the first two weeks of December.
  4. Most schools will ask you to satisfy background requirement by taking 3 or 4 core courses. You can pass this requirement either by (1) taking the course, and getting a B or higher grade; or (2) by appearing for the final exam and getting a grade of at least B. For many schools, the core courses comprise of one course in systems (OS/Networking/Architecture), one in theory (theory of computation/algorithms) and one in applications (Artificial intelligence/Machine learning etc). At some schools, the professors can waive these requirements if they feel you have enough background. Sometimes, they ask you to take an oral exam. Since your UG degree is in Civil Engineering, it might be difficult for you to convince them that you have enough background in systems part unlike ECE students - most ECE undergraduates would have taken a course in Computer Architecture. All the best!
  5. While I agree with most of CalmLogic's posts, I think your quantitative score is a bit low. Since you are from engineering background, schools naturally expect a good Q score. I know many schools have individual cut-offs, so there is a slight chance that your Q score might be an issue. UT Austin is an ambitious bet, it's a top 10 school for CS and highly selective. For networking, you should take a look at USC. Ofcourse, I'm assuming that you are ready to fund yourself for the duration of studies. GeorgiaTech also has a very good networking group. VirginiaTech offers ME in addition to MS. Good luck!
  6. Your verbal score is a bit low. Have you looked at University of Michigan? They have a good architecture group.
  7. Congrats! Those are great admits! How did you receive the response? through email?
  8. It's a no brainer, Rutgers rocks for wireless.
  9. Shoaib, TM-ian juggernaut was rejected for PhD in CS, and he is being considered for MS. You could PM him for more details.
  10. If you are rejected for PhD, they will consider you for MS.
  11. I got an email long back in January, and received my I20 in february. They are still in the process of decision making, so don't worry.
  12. To my knowledge, nothing beats CMU in computer architecture. Go for CMU!
  13. Ritesh, if you are sure of going for MS this year, then you should book a date now. Try to get a slot in June/July.
  14. This is not true. If you keep on checking the website, you will find that slots open up in random. I tried continuously for 2 days, and was able to book a slot of June 27th. Patience is the key!
  15. You cannot go to any consulate. According to the rules, you have to appear at the consulate having jurisdiction over the territory where you have been resident during the past six months. In your case, you will need to appear at Chennai consulate if you have been living in Bangalore for the past 6 months. This is not possible.
  16. Go to https://www.vfs-usa.co.in/ You can find the availability for all consulates.
