Out of curiosity: how hard are qualifying exams in Strategy/Strategic Management? What's the usual pass rate? I heard that sometimes qualifying exams act as another screnning/filter in some departments. I know that it depends a lot on the school, but I was wondering if you could kindly share of some your experience. Also another related question: after going through the websites of many Strategy phd programs, it seems like qualifying exams exist only in the US? Would you say that this is true? Thanks for reading and time!

What are the skills needed to be a RA in STR/OT?

Thx again BrazilianPhD!! Yeah you're very very right!! I'll do my best in the next 4.5 years to build a foundation in econometrics! And the part regarding the programming programs/languages is very useful as well! LOL, when I was at high-school, I thought I was going to relax at my univ...but then DAMN IT, I just had this idea of becoming a professor in STR...And now it does seem like that I'm going to be very, very busy for the next 15 years at least (5 years to finish bachelors+masters, 5 years at least to finish a phd, and 5 years at least to get tenured). But I do feel like it's kind of fun, isn's it? Working on what we like. I dislike corporate life quite a bit, feeling that I'll be very very bored by doing things that would in no case interest me and by the fact that I'd have no control over what to do. Of course, flexible working time=unlimited working time for many professors. XD Thx! -

Hi eggington, thx for the reply. Well actually your response just made me worried... So I'm actually a first-year undergrad at a well-known european b-school. Today I made several good answers to my management prof's questions in the classroom, and after some talking, he seemed to be somewhat impressed by the fact that I'm into research in strategy so early. He suggested that I could work for him as a RA after two weeks (he says that he's really busy for the next two weeks). I think it would be REALLY WONDERFUL if he delivered his promise and I could work for him as a RA, even just to get into touch with strategy research. The problems, however, are two: 1. Obviously I'm still exploring my research interests, but I really don't know if I'm interested in what he's studyin. How would this impact my RA experience? Or I don't need to worry too much about it since I'd be asked to deal with data work mostly? 2. I'm completely new to doing RA...which means that I've zero knowledge of stata, r, python, and econometrics...I'm just wondering, what do eggomgton you think my professor is going to tell to do? I do feel that this is a very unique opportunity if I could work for him as a RA in the first year already...because from what I've heard most of the time even third-year students don't get the opportunity to work for professors...and the fact that he's ok with me having zero experience with the programs and programming skills just makes me more appreciative... However, I'm also quite worried by your comments honestly...I was wondering if you might kindly give me some advice? Like should I do RA for my professor? And what can I do in these two weeks to prepare myself better (I've just purchased stata, hoping to learn the basics of it in these two weeks possibly...) Thanks!!

I mean, since doing ra is almost always about doing data related work (at least from what I've heard), do I need to worry about if there's a match between the professor's research interests and mine? If there were no match in terms of interest, what would happen? And if there were, what else could happen? Thx for reading!

Sorry that I'm assuming that the skill set needed for becoming a RA in STR and OT is the same... So, I've done some research, but my responses in terms of the knowledge of the program and programming languages are really really varied. stata: the standard tool used in STR/OT "in the past" R: quickly catching up and replacing stata SQL: mostly no need Excel: very useful Python: not strictly required, but would be very useful if there's no data available (someone told me that very often profs just happen to have a research idea and as ra I'd be expected to find out the relevant data) The thing is that I really don't have the time to learn all these skills...I have to make trade-offs...but I'm wondering, how? A phd student told me to learn stata and python, but another told me to learn r and python as stata is being used much less frequently and r is a much useful program to learn Completely overwhelmed... Besides, can I also know the level of econometrics knowledgeneeded to do ra? Would it be fine if I don't know about it at all? Or a beginner level understanding of it is required? Perhaps even an intermediate one? I was wondering if some of you would be so kind as to help me with these doubts... Thx!

So I'm an undergrad there, and as far as I'm concerned, while Bocconi has a 5 top faculty in STR in europe, it really doesn't have the same standing in OT. Actually, it seems like that its presence in OT is just really neglibile (judged by the number of Bocconi professors on google scholar who are interested in OT). Is my understanding correct? Thx!

Thx Sir for the reply! I was wondering, did you mean that actually that there's not a big difference between strategy and OT (i.e., macro-ob)? Like, if I'm interested in both issues in strategic management (e.g., acquisitions) and organizational theories such as social embedness and so on, would it be ok for me to read both literature on acquistions and organizational theories? In other words, is there a big intersection between the two sub-fields? Thx anyway for reading sir!
