  1. Out of curiosity: how hard are qualifying exams in Strategy/Strategic Management? What's the usual pass rate? I heard that sometimes qualifying exams act as another screnning/filter in some departments. I know that it depends a lot on the school, but I was wondering if you could kindly share of some your experience. Also another related question: after going through the websites of many Strategy phd programs, it seems like qualifying exams exist only in the US? Would you say that this is true? Thanks for reading and time!

  3. Hi doingfine. Yeah thx for the reply! You provided a very good perspective XD!
  4. Thx again BrazilianPhD!! Yeah you're very very right!! I'll do my best in the next 4.5 years to build a foundation in econometrics! And the part regarding the programming programs/languages is very useful as well! LOL, when I was at high-school, I thought I was going to relax at my univ...but then DAMN IT, I just had this idea of becoming a professor in STR...And now it does seem like that I'm going to be very, very busy for the next 15 years at least (5 years to finish bachelors+masters, 5 years at least to finish a phd, and 5 years at least to get tenured). But I do feel like it's kind of fun, isn's it? Working on what we like. I dislike corporate life quite a bit, feeling that I'll be very very bored by doing things that would in no case interest me and by the fact that I'd have no control over what to do. Of course, flexible working time=unlimited working time for many professors. XD Thx!
  5. I see. Thx BrazilianPhD! I'll save this post as well just in case I need to reread your and others' wonderful advice again! Thx!!
  6. Hi BrazilianPhD! Yeah I think you're right! I'm just too new to the field to decide my research interests! Also, if you don't mind, could you please also take a look at my previous comment on this page? Thx!!
  7. Hi eggington, thx for the reply. Well actually your response just made me worried... So I'm actually a first-year undergrad at a well-known european b-school. Today I made several good answers to my management prof's questions in the classroom, and after some talking, he seemed to be somewhat impressed by the fact that I'm into research in strategy so early. He suggested that I could work for him as a RA after two weeks (he says that he's really busy for the next two weeks). I think it would be REALLY WONDERFUL if he delivered his promise and I could work for him as a RA, even just to get into touch with strategy research. The problems, however, are two: 1. Obviously I'm still exploring my research interests, but I really don't know if I'm interested in what he's studyin. How would this impact my RA experience? Or I don't need to worry too much about it since I'd be asked to deal with data work mostly? 2. I'm completely new to doing RA...which means that I've zero knowledge of stata, r, python, and econometrics...I'm just wondering, what do eggomgton you think my professor is going to tell to do? I do feel that this is a very unique opportunity if I could work for him as a RA in the first year already...because from what I've heard most of the time even third-year students don't get the opportunity to work for professors...and the fact that he's ok with me having zero experience with the programs and programming skills just makes me more appreciative... However, I'm also quite worried by your comments honestly...I was wondering if you might kindly give me some advice? Like should I do RA for my professor? And what can I do in these two weeks to prepare myself better (I've just purchased stata, hoping to learn the basics of it in these two weeks possibly...) Thanks!!
  8. Thx sir for the advice! Will save it and re-read whenever I face the same situation!
  9. Thx very very much StrategicMGMT!! I will surely take my time to read the materials in the files! Thx!!!
  10. I mean, since doing ra is almost always about doing data related work (at least from what I've heard), do I need to worry about if there's a match between the professor's research interests and mine? If there were no match in terms of interest, what would happen? And if there were, what else could happen? Thx for reading!
  11. Hi CDF! yes you're right! But sorry that I forgot to mention I was perhaps interested in his research interests as well. But you did make very good points! Especially the last one that he might not have the time to give me some tutoring. Thx CDF!
  12. Sorry that I'm assuming that the skill set needed for becoming a RA in STR and OT is the same... So, I've done some research, but my responses in terms of the knowledge of the program and programming languages are really really varied. stata: the standard tool used in STR/OT "in the past" R: quickly catching up and replacing stata SQL: mostly no need Excel: very useful Python: not strictly required, but would be very useful if there's no data available (someone told me that very often profs just happen to have a research idea and as ra I'd be expected to find out the relevant data) The thing is that I really don't have the time to learn all these skills...I have to make trade-offs...but I'm wondering, how? A phd student told me to learn stata and python, but another told me to learn r and python as stata is being used much less frequently and r is a much useful program to learn Completely overwhelmed... Besides, can I also know the level of econometrics knowledgeneeded to do ra? Would it be fine if I don't know about it at all? Or a beginner level understanding of it is required? Perhaps even an intermediate one? I was wondering if some of you would be so kind as to help me with these doubts... Thx!
  13. So I'm an undergrad there, and as far as I'm concerned, while Bocconi has a 5 top faculty in STR in europe, it really doesn't have the same standing in OT. Actually, it seems like that its presence in OT is just really neglibile (judged by the number of Bocconi professors on google scholar who are interested in OT). Is my understanding correct? Thx!
  14. Thx Sir for the reply! I was wondering, did you mean that actually that there's not a big difference between strategy and OT (i.e., macro-ob)? Like, if I'm interested in both issues in strategic management (e.g., acquisitions) and organizational theories such as social embedness and so on, would it be ok for me to read both literature on acquistions and organizational theories? In other words, is there a big intersection between the two sub-fields? Thx anyway for reading sir!
  15. Hi! Thx Sir for the reply! I'm actually finding the professors whose work interests and for whom I might be able to work as a RA (and thus ask for letters of reccommendation later). Thx for the reply!
  16. I'm reading some papers in the field. However, it seems like that in strategy the literature of corporate strategy is really well-studied, meaning that it apparently isn't a very publishable topic anymore. However, I'm just an undergrad who's obviously not an insider. Would you guys telling me a bit about whether corporate strategy is and will still be a hot topic in strategy for the next few decades (yes, I'm considering about focusing on this branch possibly..) Thx for reading and consideration!!
  17. What are the factors to be considerd? For example, a professor at my university graduated from a very top management phd program, has around 10000 citations (relatively young), has a dozen of publications in the A-journals in the field, has been as one of the emerging scholars by SMS, and is an associate editor at SMS. I was wondering, what'd be the level of the prestige and reputation enjoyed by this professor? And how could I these criteria mentioned to judge the reputation and prestige of other professors? Thanks for reading!! I was told to come here to ask this question. Please help me out!!
  18. Hi all. I'm an undergrad student at a top 30 b-school interested in doing a phd in management. I'm interested in organizational-level issues. However, it seems like that there are two tracks (strategy and macro-ob) in the field. I'm reading some phd-level books and papers of strategy, but what about macro-ob? What are the key differences between the two? And how could I find relevant phd-level books and papers to see if that interests me? Thx for reading and consideration!
  19. So as we know, H index is actually pretty subject-dependent, which means that we cannot compare the index across different subjects. Then, in the field of strategic management, how high should it be for a scholar to be considered little-known/somewhat recognized/well-known/prestigious? I can point out several scholars in the field who might very well be considered to be prestigious: Michael E. Porter, h-Index: 180 David J. Teece, h-Index: 106 Jay Barney, h-Index: 87 But what about those whose h-Index is 70? 56? 40? 30? Might I know from you guys if there's a general understanding regarding the use of h-Index in the field? Thanks for time and attention!
  20. Hi StrategicMGMT, thanks for the answer! However, might I ask some more questions? 1 Did you mean that while Bocconi's faculty has an outstanding reputation in the field of strategic management, its PhD program is actually not in line with its reputation? So supposing that I were given a PhD offer from Bocconi and HEC, you would recommend HEC over Bocconi right? 2 However, how big is the difference? Because it's quite likely that I'll do my undergrad and masters at Bocconi, which means that I'll have the means to establish good relationships with and get to know the professors at Bocconi. And I feel like this is actually a very big benefit to me if I do my PhD there. 3 Strangely, you excluded LBS and put a smiling face...lol, might I know the reason? Like why did you exclude LBS from European schools? Thanks for your reading!
  21. Hi there! I was wondering if someone might be able to offer some insights into the level of prestige that Bocconi enjoys in the academic field of strategic management. I have done a quick research through the UDT ranking myself, and if one selects only the journals in the field of strategic management (i.e., AMJ, AMR, SMJ, ASQ, Org Science, and Management Science), it seems like Bocconi is a respected but not excellent research institution in the field. However, unsure about the usefulness of the ranking results since they do not take into account the differences in the faculty numbers at different schools, I would like to kindly ask some "insiders" to help me compare Bocconi against some other top research institutions. Specifically, would someone be so kind as to tell me how is Bocconi compared with INSEAD, Harvard, Wharton, HEC, HKUST, and so on IN THE FIELD OF STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT IN TERMS OF ACADEMIC STATUS? Is Bocconi among the top 10 or 20 most respected research institutions in the field? Thanks for reading and time!
