  1. Sorry I didnt see this. I didn't plan on a masters at all unless I didn't get into any programs. I was okay with going to a top 40 program. I really hated the idea of taking out over 100k in debt for school/living expenses. My admissions director did say a reason he chose me was for my corporate experience, though, so I am unsure if I could have pulled this off straight from undergrad.
  2. Absolutely not! I got into a t15 from a strong applied math, t100 econ school. I have a corporate job right now, did it for 3 months, decided I hated it and went for the PhD. I have no debt and I am very happy about that.
  3. I had a similar issue. My favorite advice from people was "go where you will be happy". As long as you are confident that you can write your best dissertation possible at both schools, I personally think it comes down to where you will happy. Of course I can't decide that for you, but it seems like the difference in programs isn't so big (at least from what you wrote, I'm unfamiliar with them) that choosing one over the other will not hurt your career.
  4. From my past experience, it seemed like all of my negotiations and extra offers took place over zoom. If you want to at least start up the negotiations, I would recommend asking for a video call and discussing there. It was easier for me because I was offered a call instead of seeking one out. Once we started having a natural conversation, I was asked about my competing offers (which didn't have a higher stipend) and it seems like that's when negotiation would have started.
  5. Has anyone received communication about a visit day for UPenn? I'm waitlisted but still interested
  6. I didn't get a waitlist notification and I haven't heard anything from NW, so probably not
  7. I was admitted to a few programs somewhat similar in ranking and I need to start thinking about where I will go. I'm new to the academic environment, so I'm not sure what is ultimately most important in a PhD program. What should I ask professors and advanced students? Or what should I be hoping to learn? I have a few ideas, but I'd appreciate any advice. Thank you!
  8. Not to sound super anxious, but I got an update on my Rochester portal. It says "Decision Released", but no date and the link leads to a page that says "There is no update to your application status to report." Does anyone else see this? It's been there for maybe an hour.
  9. I believe they did not. Last year, NW sent out a first wave of rejections, then WL/final rejections. This second wave was in mid-March thru April. I noticed some applicants emailed the dept. around March 9th asking about their status and the dept. replied – from the people that posted about that, they were notified that they were WL.
  10. I was formally accepted to a PhD program I am really excited about. In my SOP I stated that I would be taking some “proof-based courses this spring”, but I’d like to drop them. I didn’t mention it on a course list or anywhere else, let alone what courses they are — just one sentence in my SOP. Do you think I could drop the courses? Do you think they’ll be checking?
  11. Hi! I am planning on applying for a PhD eventually, but I want to hedge my bets and apply to MA programs too. My math background is strong (4.0 applied math major), but I am missing some classes like Real Analysis, Calc IV, and other advanced, proof-based courses. I would absolutely prefer an MA in economics because stats/pure math does not interest me that much. Right now I plan on applying to Columbia, NYU, and Wisconsin's terminal MA programs. Do you have any other recommendations that could strengthen my PhD application? Thank you!
  12. I think my letters will be strong! My thesis advisor is writing one and contacting schools’ admission he has relationships with. My other professor said she will write me a “very strong letter” — I TA’d for her and took her course. To make up for my lack of proof-based math, the head of the applied math dept is writing one to vouch for the rigor of the program and my abilities — I took a class with her and she personally nominated me for several awards. My letter writers seem very enthusiastic about me pursuing a PhD, so I think that is a good sign.
  13. I'm new didn't realize there was a template! Thanks for letting me know. I just tried loosely mirror a past post
  14. No clue! I don't think a lot of students go for PhDs. Do you have an idea of what ranking I should be targeting? I'd hate to shell out hundreds in application fees for no reason.
