  1. That was me. Visit day is on March 26. If you haven’t heard back from them I guess it’s most likely an IR. But this year you really can’t tell until much later.
  2. They have started reaching out to people in their ‘waitlist that’s not a waitlist’ for short interviews. Stern Econ has target of 2 students this year, and the whole Stern department aims to admit only 9 students in total.
  3. I am having some major impostor syndrome feelings today. I got an offer from a top 10 (top 5-7?) department a couple of weeks ago and it was a dream come true. Their stronger fields happen to match the fields I’m interested in. However, because I have not heard back from other similarly ranked programs (today seems like IR from Princeton and Columbia), I feel like this was all a fluke. I’m feeling anxious that someone made a mistake and overestimated my profile and I’m not really fit for a top 10 school. Even though I most likely wouldn’t accept other offers over the one I already have, I still find myself craving some sort of validation. Sorry for the rant, just needed to vent a little 😣
  4. This is exactly what I heard and hence the rumor that the number of admitted students will be very small. I don’t know if any university other than Columbia has had en exceptional number of deferrals and have very few admits
  5. I don’t know about Duke, but the rumor among predocs is that Columbia would admit a very small class this year (
  6. Do you think another batch of answers will come tomorrow? There seems to be some calendar effect of Fridays on sending decisions. Also last year many schools sent replies around mid-February and this year some have sent results even earlier. Maybe I’m just very anxious but I’m kinda hoping to get more results tomorrow instead of waiting another week 😣
  7. I still use the 2017 US News ranking as my main guide. Other rankings are either about the undergrad programs or about the faculty research. As a prospective PhD student, although faculty publishing in top journals is attractive, at the end it won’t matter unless they communicate and support students. Therefore some peer feedback is important and the US News ranking seems to be the only to include some for grad school specifically. Of course it’s still an imperfect ranking, and conditional on acceptance I encourage everyone to reach out to faculty and current students. Sometimes going a bit lower in the ranking could be absolutely worth it if another program has more supportive culture and opportunities for their students. We’re talking about spending 5-6 years somewhere.
  8. How is everyone coping with waiting until more results are out? Even though I already received a couple offers that I’m very happy about, I just keep checking gradcafe and here for updates. Despite that I’m lucky enough to already have some acceptances I’m still quite anxious about the whole admission season being over. I’m having a hard time focusing on doing my assignments and work :( This year replies started so soon that I feel like I’ve been stressing for forever
