How much to value not having to TA in first year
macrolabor replied to macrolabor's topic in PhD in Economics
Thank you for your post. I haven’t taken grad courses yet, which is one of the reasons I’m thinking about this very hard. I am reaching out to some grad students to try to learn about the TA responsibilities in the first year at School C. From what I’ve heard so far, most students have some sort of TA responsibility, but it’s not always just teaching (could be grading, etc). -
How much to value not having to TA in first year

Yes, as of now I believe I want to specialize in macro-labor. But it could be more labor than macro depending on my feelings about grad macro coursework. It’s kind of a complicated situation. I have a good shot at getting off the waitlist at School C, and also have fully-funded offers without TA requirements in the first year from both School A and School B. I’ve heard that School C requires nearly all grad students to teach in the first year, and especially since I’m not one of the first few off of the waitlist (eg fellowship offer), I’m guessing that will apply to me. But School C is arguably the best macro department outside of the top 7-8, so it is a really good fit for me (assuming I’ll stay with macro). School A and B both have very good macro faculty, but not at School C’s level (especially with a large macroeconomic research institution next door to School C). I’m trying to weigh my offers now instead of the holding off until April 15 (School C said they likely will make many offers on or after 4/15). Decisions, decisions! -
I have been admitted to several similarly ranked universities, and some of them require TAing in the first year and others don’t (funding about equal in both cases). How much more should I value the no TA in first year offers? Should it be a no-brainer to go to the program with no TA in the first year, or is TA responsibilities usually lax enough that it doesn’t really matter? For example, assuming that the funding is the same, would you take an offer from a slightly worse program with no TA requirements in first year vs. a program that’s a little better but does have TA requirements in the first year? And yes I will ask current grad students at the programs about this. Thanks for your insight!

Anybody who got an offer from Minnesota willing to share the funding package + TA requirements? I would really appreciate it!

Anybody got insider info on Northwestern? I haven’t heard anything yet - sounds like precious years they did a couple waves of acceptances/rejections?

Did Northwestern send out WLs? Or is not hearing back likely an IR at this point?

Thank you! What do you mean when you say “UT-Austin is almost competitive”? Almost competitive to UW for macro-labor? Or almost competitive to most places outside of the top ten for macro-labor? Being advised by Sahin would be awesome. She is a spectacular scholar.

I have been accepted to both, and as my name suggests, I am interested in macro-labor. I know that Wisconsin is higher ranked overall, but I have a sense that UT-Austin is improving (recent hires) and has strong macro-labor faculty as well. Thoughts on which program is better for PhD students (faculty, culture, placement, etc)? Or is Wisconsin clearly the better choice because it is closer to the top 10? This is a very new experience for me, so any insight is helpful. Thanks!

Do you know if they already sent out acceptances? Or are they only waitlisting to start? Maybe I just missed the acceptances on GC.

Any insight on the NYU waitlists on GC? Are they real or trolls? I haven’t seen any recent acceptances on GC, so odd they would WL folks before sending acceptances.

Does anyone have any recommendations for questions to ask/not to ask when talking to an ad com chair about an offer? Is this the time to ask about things like percent who pass prelims or average time to completion of the degree? Or should that wait? Thanks!

Is it possible that Harvard is just make fewer offers now, but will accept a bunch of people on their waitlist later so that their cohort size is closer to normal? Or do we know for a fact the cohort will be a quarter of what is normal?

How many of yall got referred to MACSS for UChicago instead of MAPSS? Any idea what it means to be referred to one MA instead of the other?
