  1. hi knok, will you be heading to UW Seattle in fall? i would suggest if you have a family to look around the ravenna/sand point area. it's generally a suburban area more suited for families and stuff. the actual U-district tends to get a bit rowdy in the night. and it's usually very noisy. if you're headed there, drop me a pm.
  2. well, usually they require that you show them that you have one year's funding. so are they asking that you show them $49500 or $49500*6 yearswhich is roughly USD$300 000. because if that's the case, i think they're stupid, callous and really need a good whack over the head. but if they want you to show only USD$49500, i think that's quite a normal thing and you will have to send them all your financial documents. the best thing is to give them a letter of scholarship award, a written letter from your bank stating that you have secured suffiecient funds and all your tax return forms and savings statement. i was supposed to show that i had USD$50000 (for one year, no funding)to attend GATech and even though i took a rough $15000USD loan, they still issued me an I20.
  3. rohitkumar: 1. did you include your scholarship statement with your application? 2. give your parent's tax return forms which indicate how much they earn annually 3. get a letter from your bank saying that you already have $20000 (no mention of a loan) and they believe you will be able to pay them back.
  4. then i suppose that US$60000 is enough. do you have a letter from your college saying you have the scholarship? remember to show them bank statements as well.
  5. can i just ask where you're from? if you're from the EU, it's likely that it'll be easier for you to get some form of scholarship there. so you would probably stand a better chance in finland. i don't have any experience with the european admissions system, but i do know that they're usually easy to get in but graduating is hard. the fact that you can speak russian and soon, finnish, would help you espeically in securing jobs at international organizations. whatever your background is, i don't think that it will hurt your chances in anyway. as long as you have a clear idea of what you want to do, why you want to do it and how your want to do it, you have a good a chance as any other person who didn't drop out, got straight As and attended harvard. the mindest of american admissions committees is "show me the future" the keyword being show and future, which means that you have to show them what you're capable of achieveing in the future. they don't dwell on your past achievements although if you're some prize-winning scientist, it would help.
  6. didn't you get an I-20 for it? I mean, usually the school gauges how much funds you have before they issue an I-20, so you must have at least some amoutn of money available in order for the school to issue you an I-20. look, I understand that most of us can't afford to fund our entire program (4 years maybe) with the money that we have, and will need some sort of aid. I see that you have US$60000 and that will probably only be enough to last you for 1 and the half years. I don't think the cost of attendance will only be US$13000 - maybe for tuition alone, but what about living costs? That's very very little money. Is there anyway that you can get your school to issue you a letter saying that they will be able to offer you a scholarship? i got some assistanship, and my whole cost of attendance was paid for - so the immigration officers didn't even need to look if i had enough funds - they just saw that everything was paid for in the I-20. you just have to get the school to verify that you have enough. you must tell them that both your parents are working and how much they earn and that at the end of every year, you will be able to pay your tuition with the money they have. you can even send in a letter from the bank saying that you've secured funds and that your parents will be able to send you abroad. send in your parent's tax form, get bank statements from your uncle, auntie etc. just borrow it from them for a while - and get them to write a letter saying they'll be able to fund you. i'm sorry but if you really don't have enough funds, do you think it's such a good idea to be spending 4 - 5 years in the US where money is everything and everything is money? i wish you all the best and i think that not being able to go to the states because of money issues is really painful. i hope you find a way through.
  7. well, they do ask if you have any relatives in the US on the EVAF form. do you really want to lie about that?
  8. unless you really have no access to a photography shop, i don't understand why you can't just go straight to one w/o question and get it all done proper! they get it done in a couple of hours! do you really need to incur the wrath of already oversuspicious immigration officers just becuse you don't want to change your photo to the specified format?
  9. tell them the truth. there is a section on the EVAF where they ask about your parents/brothers/sisters and what their status is in the US ie: permanent resident, green card etc. etc. don't lie. that will hurt your chances more than anything. tell them that even though you have a brother there, you have to come back because you have to take care of your parents. if you're currently working, get your employer to write you a letter to say that you will be coming back. don't ever ever ever let them catch you lying because they'll blacklist you and you can't even get a vistors visa the next time round. just be frank, honest, and unafraid. it'll work. good luck.
  10. i thought it would be better to put all majors on one page. it's just a general overview of what kind of graduates were excepted where.
  11. I was helped immensely by the Fall 2005 thread by bigredx24x, so I thought it would be a good way to help the Fall 2007 candidates. Please contribute if you have heard from all your schools and chosen one. ______________________________________________________________ Age: M/F: Location when applying: Major(s) in undergrad: Undergraduate institution: Major(s) applying for: Area of specialization: Degree(s) earned: Degree(s) applying for: Undergrad GPA (try to adjust to 4.0 system): Class Rank (if applicable): GRE Verbal: GRE Math: GRE Writing: How many months did you study for GRE general: GRE Subject (if applicable): How many months did you study for GRE subject: Researched as undergrad in University (y/n & years): Researched as undergrad in Industry (y/n & years): Published (y/n & # of articles): Other: Advice to those applying to grad school: Accepted Schools (aid: y/n and how much and what form; date notified and method of notification): Rejected Schools (date notified and method of notification): Waitlisted Schools: Chosen School: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Age: 23 M/F: F Location when applying: Kuala Lumpur Major(s) in undergrad: Civil & Environmental Engineering Undergraduate institution: :p Major(s) applying for: Civil & Environmental Engineering Area of specialization: Hydrology, Climatology Degree(s) earned: BCEng Degree(s) applying for: MS Undergrad GPA (try to adjust to 4.0 system): 3.36 Class Rank (if applicable): Top 5% of graduating class GRE Verbal: 690 GRE Math: 780 GRE Writing: 6.0 How many months did you study for GRE general: 3 GRE Subject (if applicable): N/A How many months did you study for GRE subject: N/A Researched as undergrad in University (y/n & years): N Researched as undergrad in Industry (y/n & years): N Published (y/n & # of articles): Yes, 2 one submitted to international journal Other: Work experience (one year) and internship in industry Advice to those applying to grad school: SOPs really do matter. If you can convey all your emotions and drive strongly one one page within the word limit, you have a good a chance as even the smartest of the lot. Research interests matter. Retake your GRE if you think your score is way below par. It's worth the effort. 12. got in. email today. not cs, applied sciences. no finacial aid but possibility once i get there though. good luck.
  13. i'm still waiting. i think it's a reject because the semester starts Aug 14 i think, one of the earliest.
  14. :D You should write Sir Spielberg a letter and tell him your theory. That'll perk em USC peeps eyes right up. His best friend George Lucas graduated from their drama school. So maybe that's why he felt obliged to donate. They gave me admissions so I wouldn't jeopardize that. But if they hadn't... mass spamming is a pretty good idea. I'll save that idea for the other two schools who hasn't said a word yet...
