  1. Hi, Greaper is right. If someone like Maggiez with such worst language skills can get admission in the US, I think we should be confident!

    time doubt

Hi, The pattern of the GRE is designed in such a way that one's background in English or Mathematics does not place the candidate in a more advantageous position when compared to the others. If you carefully go through the Maths questions, you may find that all of them seem simple, but are in fact, slightly twisted. They are puzzles actually. As for V, you need good practice, especially with RC and Analogies. If I were in your place, I would rather wait and apply next year. I am saying all this assuming that you are an above average or average candidate. I don't know you, and it is possible that you are very brilliant and excellent in everything you do. In that case, please ignore my suggestions. All the best.
  3. Congradulations Suja....It is a good score indeed. Your tips on the Quant section was helpful. All the best.
  4. Hi, I don't think you will be needing the school certificates/transcripts anymore. In fact, I lost my 12th standard marksheet in the tsunami. I was told that I can get it replaced. Still, I am not worried. Let the GRE get over..I realy don't know even if I'll bother to get it replaced after the GRE...Let's see..So, don't worry yourself with school level certificates. Normally, they don't ask it, unlike Indian Universities.:)
  5. Hi, I wish to thank 'suja' and 'man with the mission' for so unambiguously explaining matters. I really feel relieved now. Thanks a lot...
  6. Hi, Can anyone explicitly tell me whether one needs to study topics like 'Analytical Geometry' and 'Matrices and Determinants' for GRE? I haven't seen them in any of the normal GRE prep books. However, when someone discusses it in the GRE Maths forum , I get petrified. I am a non maths student. Please help.....suja, are you reading this??
  7. The population of a town decreases by 'x%' during the first year, decreases by 'y%' during the second year and again decreases by 'z%' during the third year. If the present population of the town is 'P', then the population of the town three years ago was:: P*100*100*100 ----------------------- (100-x)(100-y)(100-z). The population of a town is 'P'.It decreases by 'x%' during the first year, decreases by 'y%' during the second year and again deceases by 'z%' during the third year. The population after 3 years will be: P*(100-x)(100-y)(100-z) -------------------------- 100*100*100. If 'X' litres of oil was poured into a tank and it was still 'x%' empty, then the quantity of oil that must be poured into the tank in order to fill it to the brim is: X*x ------- litres. 100 - x If 'X' liters of oil was poured into a tank and it was still 'x%' empty, then the capacity of the tank is: X*100 ---------- litres. 100 - x A candidate scoring x% in an examination fails by "a" marks, while another candidate who scores y% marks gets "b" marks more than the minimum required pass marks. Then the maximum marks for that exam = 100(a+b) ---------- y-x . The pass marks in an examination is x%. If a candidate who secures y marks fails by z marks, then the maximum marks is given by 100(y+z) ----------- x.
  8. Hi, :)There are many books you can use.It depends on your aptitude also.I giving a list of books that I am using. I gathered these from this very TM only, at various points of time. Verbal: Create your own word list if you have time. I did so, and is immensely helpful to me. That should include words from Barron and Guru wordlist/www.11brinkster.com.I used the word list from the latter. It is an excellent software available in TM itself. I however use the word list only. Avoid unnecessary overlapping. To this 'personal word list', you can add:1.Word power Made Easy(Norman Lewis) 2.All about words(Morris Rosenblum) 3.Six weeks to Word Power(Wilfred Funk). He has written two books. Both are unique and good. And the words found in Norman Lewis can be found all over in Barron's/ Guru/brinkster etc, except for the phobias/manias/and the 'cides'. It makes interesting reading, providing a respite from the word lists, that's all.. If you are in India, you can find good books for Maths. I'd suggest M Tyra and Ashish Agarwal. Though they don't provide as much practice as RS Agarwal, it contains a lot of excellent short cut formulae that you cannot find in any other book. Don't be mislead by the rubbish look of Tyra. I stopped using RS Agarwal after coolpaggy told me not to. He was perfectly right in saying that it is not suitable for GRE.I am non maths student, and naturally preferred using these books. If you are from an engineering background, I don't think you will need these many books. After establishing a foundation with these books, you may give a ice topping to your preparation with the branded items like what you said:Barrons,Princeton,Kaplan. It is good if you get the much hyped "Big Book". I am not lucky enought to even see the book atleast once, forget using it. But I don't want to waste my time searching/regretting for it.I don't believe that a single book can be a magic potion..It is probablly popular because it is out of print now. Or that's how I console myself!!;) As for enhancing your skills in RC(for quick reading) and AWA(to get good ideas in a flick), keep reading a good newspaper like "The Hindu", and of course,'www.aldaily.com'. I think Ivo recommended it in his/her debriefing, for the first time in TM, if I remember well. TM is a goldmine in itself. You also have numerous sources in the internet. You may use them to substitute what I''ve suggested. I am giving my personal views only. I am not sure whether it might suit you. But, worth trying.. My test is on October 7. Hope all of us here make it. All the best.:)
  9. Hi, As long as the two dates fall in two different calendar months, you do not need to worry. You can take tests on say, Aug 31st and September 1st..Asphalt has already given an authentic reply. So, do not worry yourself with unnecessary doubts. You may visit gre.org, and read the information bulletin- "retake policy", if you still have doubts. All the best.
  10. Hi, As for quant, I would like to suggest two books.1. Magical Book on Quicker Maths-M.Tyra. It offers a lot of short cuts, and is far better when compared to rs aggarwal(which is more suited for the Bank exams in India). 2. Ashish Agarwal is also good. These books offer a lot of excellent formulae, and not like rs agarwal which only offers a lot of 'mechanical' practice, when compared to these books. If you are India, you may try these books as an alternative to rs agarwal. Individual opinions differ, and these are my personal views only. I benefitted a lot from both of these books, and I hope it helps you too..
  11. Hi, Many recieve the confirmation email while some don't.This should not be a cause of worry, though it isn't your fault. A phone call would provide the solution. The ETS is absolutely flawless is'nt it? {{ Friends, I had asked for 'an' additional score report for my TOEFL, and paid by credit card as usual. Much to my horror, they had deducted 30 dollars from the card, to send an ASR to some university in Hong Kong(apart from the university of my choice) which I never requested. It took me two whole months to make them understand their blunder and get back the money.Not to mention the number of emails that I had to send, only to recieve automated replies that claimsthat my matter will be looked into..Funny!!}}
  12. Hi, Though the official ETS website says you should be recieving your score report in 28 days, I suggest you stay calm till atleast 30 days since you took your test, and then make any attempt to contact. Mostly what happens is that you send an email demanding an explanation, and you recieve your score report even before you recieve a reply for your email!! So don't worry, you will be getting it. At the most by 15th August, not more than that. Bye..
  13. Hi, I wished to provide you one. I had tried to copy and paste, but the whole tabular column became jumbled as soon as I pasted it here. I wonder why?? But, I'd be happy to provide you the link. Please go to The Times newspaper supplement and you will get a multi parameter ranking based on fields like Biomedicine/Science/Engineering/Arts and Humanities etc.It was released only 6 months back, and is considered to be very authentic and fair. You also have a classification based on geographical location too. I also warn you against a Chinese university which claims to have ranked the top 500 universities of the world. It was released in 1999 and is somethings which was done relying on the history of the universities, rather than anything else. So don't go for it, if you get it as a search result. If you still have problems in accessing it, message me with your email id.I'll send you one , as an attachment, so that it doesn't get jumbled. All the best.

    pls suggest me

Hi, Normally universities take the highest score only. So, don't worry about reatking your GRE. And has absolutely nothing to do with your visa. The competetion is something exclusive to each uni., and it is up to you to find it out from the university. Retaking the GRE has nothing to do with your scholarships too, provided u get a better score. So, don't confuse yourself. All the best.
  15. Hi, I too use window xp and am getting it correctly. How come u don't get it??
  16. Hi, Read page 35 in Barron's.
  17. Hi, Don't get upset if you have not acquired the Big book. I never got one, after trying hard. Only guys in Hyderbad and Bombay sem to get it easily. However, I've substituted it with equally decent material, and am not a worried soul now. If you are from India , I would suggest 'Tyra and Kundan' for quants, apart from all the usual stuff being mentioned in TM. For Verbal, I had downloaded from this very TM, the entire list of words found in Big Book(Heading:Sorted Barron's list-toward's the end). So, I am not missing it at all. You may still ask: What about the wonderful RC section in Big Book? I'd say that Arco practice book on RC, coupled with some coaching class material which u can borrow from someone( say Brilliant tutorials, Visu notes etc), is more than sufficient, not to mention Barron's.

    GRE Review Books

Hi, Haste makes waste and hurry makes worry. There is no point in fuming even before you've even tried. First give up your 'decision' that you can't get the magic score, okay. I was in the exactly same position a few months back. But thanks to members like attraxion, ivo and many other , I am very confident before the exam. So you too plough through these threads, plan your strategy and execute it neatly. Before that, visit the http://www.gre.org, or atleast read the first few pages of Barron's to know the basics of this test. You'll do fine. All the best.
  19. Hi, It is also possible for you to confirm your appointment by calling up your Regional Registration Centre/test centre of Prometric where u will be taking your test.Phone numbers can be found in the website itself. It is okay if you provide your name and confirmation number, and they will be orally confirming it. I did so when I did not recieve the confirmation email last time.
  20. Hi Abhinav, I am afraid you are yet to come to terms with the grim reality. Wherever you settle down, you have to face difficulties. You have to battle them out, okay. If you are that particular about being an entrepreneur, better go for GMAT, do your MBA and see what's next.Whatever it is, things aren't as easy as to just like that to 'handpick' the country of your choice, as if a red carpet has already been rolled out for us there. I am not discouraging you.I only mean to say that you do more digging to get more info and then decide, as this is forum meant for GRE, primarily. It is not wrong of you to decide your future anyway. So, I suggest you better do some soul searching and have a man to man talk with someone who is really competent in this regard. That would be the right choice. And if you may not know, the members here are more from Asia than from any other continent!! I am sorry I've been a bit brusque, but had to be so to shake you out of your naiveness. All the best. :)
  21. Hi, Normally only the highest score is taken, irrespective of the number of attempts. Exceptions to this rule are very less. To be absolutely clear, you may try contacing the uni where u intend to apply. They should be explicitly clarifying your queries. Retaking the GRE will not cast a poor shadow on your admission profile. That is what I was told by 'my' university of choice, Okay.Coz I too am retaking it.
  22. Hi, I read atleast two posts in TM itself, at varying points of time, advocating the uselessness of 800.com. I am sorry I don't remember the thread. Even recently, Ivo had not praised(!) 800.com in his/her debriefing. Of course, I don't have any personal experience, but was only trying to help by passing on the wisdom of someone else..
  23. Hi, I might have been wrong. I was just venting my ire, that's all....
  24. Hi, It is one of the most insightful essAYs, telling the absolute truth about the ETS. However, I don't think we should be surprised about the fallacies of the ETS, as it is a part of the American Government anyway. They have always been losing wars since the Korean War in 1950, but behave as if nothing happened.Hmmm...
  25. Hi, It is true that nothing can match your self study. I did join such a weekend class in Chennai, India. I discontinued after two weekends itself, when 12 more weekends to go!! A motivated and net savvy candidate can definitely gather more than the adequate material required for studying. May be such classes might suit job goers, but I am sure these classes cannot promise you any magic score of 1400 and above. If you are smug with 1000-1200, you can definitely join these classes. If you want to push further, it is your personal home work that is going to make the difference!! Whatever I've stated here is a personal experience only. I don't disagree if any 'miraculous' coaching center exists in your hometown, okay.
