  1. I encountered a question today that I spent some considerable time thinking about it and yet found no clue on analysing the sentence structure. I hope there's someone who can provide me a good explanation for solving the following sentence: In commercial garment construction, one advantage of serging over single needle sewing is that the seam allowance is overcast as the seam is sewn (instead of ) a separate process requiring deeper seam allowance. The correct answer is "rather than in". I undertand that "rather than" is considered conjunction and is normally used to comparing a thing to the other. which subject is compared to a separate process? Is it the seam allowance, or the commercial garment construction? It is very likely the latter is the correct choice, but I need a cohersive explanation for that. Greatly appreicated for your help!
  2. PUBLIC sector (government-owned) companies are often unprofitable and a drain on the taxpayer. Such enterprises should be sold to the private sector, where competition will force them either to be efficient and profitable or else to close. Which of the following, if true, identifies a flaw in the policy proposed above? Answer: C )The services provided by many public-sector companies must be made available to citizens, even when a price that covers costs cannot be charged. Question: Why not D (some unprofitable private-sector companies have become profitbale after being taken over by the government to prevent their closing). The policy suggests that private sector can help public sector companies become more profitable. i think choice D does identify the flaw, and that is, private sector is not the way to turn public companies to be profitbable. In fact, when some private companies are in financial trouble, government can help them. Thank you
  3. Even though air bags make cars safer in crashes, the law does not require car manufacturers to equip new cars with these lifesaving restraints. THis lack of regulation disadvantages many people, for only car buyers who can afford the extra cost of air bags now enjoy that superior crash protection. Just as all milk is required by law to be pasteurized to protect people against the bovine tuberculosis in raw milk, cars should be required by law to be equipped with air bags to mzximize vehicle safety. Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the author's argument? Answer: Choice E. Since tuberculosis is infectious, people who drink unpasteurized milk are a threat to public health, whereas people who drive cars without air bags at most endanger the life of the car's occupants. Question: i am so lost after reading the answer because I don't see how it can weakens the argument. I chose D (Equipping cars with air bags will not decrease significnatly the number of car crashes) becasue the statement counters conclusion that equipping new cars with air bag should be required by law.
  4. Chocolate lovers often consume excessive amounts of chocolate when they are under stress. Since this overconsumption is often followed by an acne episode, it follows that eating chocolate is one cause of acne attacks in those individuals susceptible to acne. Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument above? C) Overconsumption of rich sweets other than chocolate has been found to be correlated with acne episodes. D) Hormonal changes associated with stress often lead to acne episodes. Answer: choice D. Hormonal changes associated with stress often lead to acne episodes. Quesiton: I kinda understand why D is a better answer but I just need someone to explain to me why choice C is wrong ( Overconsumption of rich sweets other than chocolate has been found to be correlated with acne episodes) Is it because the overconsumption of rich sweets does not CAUSE but correlates to acne episode. Thank you
  5. OG, 9th edition # 142 In one of the most stunning reversals in the history of marketing, the Coca-Cola company in July 1985 yielded to thousands of irate consumers demanding that it should bring back the original Coke formula. Suggested answer:D) who demanded that it chosen answer: A) demadnign that it should Question: i don't understand why D is the correct answer. The verb "bring" should have been "brought" following the pronoun "it" in choice D. Thank you

  8. Question 83, official guide 9th edition Excavation of the ancient city of Kourion on the island of Cyprus revealed a pattern of debris and collapsed buildings typical of town devastated by earthquakes. Archaeologists have hypothesized that the destruction was due to a major earthquake known to have occurred near the island in a.d. 365. which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the archaeologists' hypothesis? (B) No coins minted after A.D. 365 were found in Kourion, but coins mnted before that year were found in abundance. © Most modern histories of Cyprus mention that an earthquake occurred near the island in A.D. 365. Answer: choice B. No coins minted after a.d. 365 were found in Kourion, but coins mnted before that year were found in abundance. Question: why not choice C, as it provides the most important evidence (that earthquake did occur) needed to support the hypothesis. Also, I don't see how coins give support to the hypothesis.
  9. The tobacco industry is still profitable and projections are that it will remain so. In the us this year, the total amount of tobacco sold by tobacco farmers has increased, even though the number of adults who smoke has decreased. Each of the following, if true, could explain the simltaneous increase in tobacco sales and decrease in the number of adults who smoke except: Answer: choice A. During this year, the number of women who have begun to smoke is greater than the number of men who have quit smoking. Question: why not choice c: (during this year, the number of nonsmokers who have beun to use chewing tobacco or snuff is greater than the number of people who have quit smoking) My first instinct is, choice C should be the exception because it has no relevance to the passage above.
  10. During the second world war, about 375,000 civilians died in the u.s. and about 408,000 memebers of the u.s. armed forces died overseas. On the basis of those figures, it can be concluded that it was not much more dangerous to be overseas in the armed forces during the second world war than it was to stay at home as a civilian. Which of the following would reveal most clearly the absurdity of the conclusion drawn above? Answer: comparing death rates per thousand members of each group rather than comparing total numbers of deaths. Question: how would the comparison of death rates (376 vs 408 per thousand) exposure the absurity? because the 2 numbers on the passage have already indicated a strong comparison).
