  1. the math study guide in the powerprep software. It is the exact material that is found on the actual tests. If you know all that material, you can answer any question on the exam.
  2. By the way, the Analytical Reasoning score in the third column of the first table naturally was changed from multiple choice to the essay writing component after this data's time period. Simply convert the old scaled 300 ~ 800 pt range to the current 1 ~ 6 pt system: 800 = 6 700 = 5 600 = 4 500 = 3 400 = 2 300 = 1 This is the most recent data I've seen put out by ETS. No comments on this? Makes you feel better about your own scores, does it not?
  3. I took the test again today and I have a sheet with their official ETS data for mean average test scores. Period: 1998 ~ 2001 General Test Interpretive Data Used on Score Reports % rankings Scaled Score------Verbal------Quant------Analytical _____________________________________________ 800---------------99----------94----------97 700---------------97----------71----------81 600---------------85----------50----------56 500---------------59----------29----------33 400---------------30----------12----------14 300----------------5-----------3-----------3 # of examinees -------------1,082,718----1,082,416----1,080,935 mean ------------------469---------584---------560 std deviation ------------------117---------148---------139 % male / female ----------------41 / 55------41 / 55-----41 / 55 (examinees who earned no score are not included) General Test Mean Scores Classified by Intended Graduate Major Field Major Field--------# examinees------Verb----Quant----Analytical ________________________________________________________ Life Sciences-------107,500---------464------568--------577 Physical Sciences----45,700---------491------694--------633 Engineering----------46,600---------474------721--------632 Social Sciences------79,500---------484------548--------574 Humanities-----------39,300---------541------549--------591 Education------------36,000---------450------521--------550 Business--------------6,500---------444------570--------556 (data limited to examinees who earned their degrees within 2 years of testing)
  4. I just want to reaffirm my conclusion that powerprepp is indeed the best study material. I took the test again today and it was spot on. There were even some questions the same as the software! I recommend Barron's vocabulary section and powerprepp's exercises + math study guide. If you master all three you should do well. Barren's math section is extremely thorough -- even overkill I believe. For example I've never had combinations/permutations probability questions on an official exam yet. The real GRE has only simple elementary probability questions. BUT, if you master Barron's math as well you should ace the exam itself. You should only take the powerprepp practice tests one time each, that way you avoid simply memorizing the questions and artificially boosting your score. Before you start studying for GRE, take one practice test to create your baseline of where you stand now. When you are ready to take the exam after lots of preparation, do the second practice test to see how much you improved -- that score should be very accurate to what you will get on the real exam.
  5. Only need a 700+ Q score if you are mastering in engineering or such a field.
  6. None. Powerprep is best, its most accurate to what the actual test looks like and will ask you. Made by the people to make the tests.
  7. I think the probability and word problems are the hardest...they eat up the most time.
  8. Did your test give you a set of data and ask you to calculate std deviation? Mine did not and I'm wondering if anyone had that kind of problem. I would assume not because it takes too much time to calculate out in this kind of test. So did yours?
  9. I might be completely wrong on this, but assuming both grading scales follow the same model for As Bs and Cs, then how about a straight ratio conversion? n/4 = 8.25/10 Gives you a 3.3/4.0 for cumulative GPA on US model.
  10. I took the GRE once and taking it again in one week. The test is only difficult because of the time contraints, imo.
  11. Concentrate on your weak areas to make your studying more efficient is all I can say.
  12. My feeling is the the practice questions in Barrons and Kaplans, etc, are all far more difficult than the actual test itself. The actual test is more like what you find on the powerprep software...makes sense since they are the ones who make the tests. The newer GRE has even tried to switch focus away from long calculations and concentrate more on your analytic ability. For some people that means its easier, for some its harder. For me, it's easier.
  13. If you answered 23/30 quant questions and still got a 720 I think thats impressive.
  14. Check out the statistics in the powerprep software...you can find out there. I know 650 is around 72%.
  15. When you are reading the sentence, first put in your own words so that it makes sense to you in the context of the sentence. Then look at the choices...do any look similar in meaning to what you would have done? That's what I do and it works well for me.
  16. What part of the verbal section are you having problems with? When you take the PowerPrep tests how do you do with them? GPA in school can have very little to do with your ability to analyse problems quickly under pressure such as in the GRE. It's one of the widest misconceptions out there that students with 4.0s are geniuses. I know many who are actually quite average IQ wise, however they are very hard workers and do nothing but study every waking moment every day. As long as you put in the time and effort, almost anyone can get great grades. Not trying to discount your efforts, but just suggesting you shouldnt be convincing yourself you have some kind of disability. You may just need to study even more, maybe change methods or approach, etc. I got a 550 in verbal to my disappointment and I'm pretty strong on verbal. Conversely I'm weak in math and scored better on that. The problem I have is that considering the thousands of difficult obscure words out there, they only choose a dozen or so...what's the odds of knowing every one they ask?
  17. Are some of you suggesting that if you get the first 15 right and get the rest wrong you would still have a good score? I highly doubt that. The questions don't always give you a harder one when you get the last one right and vice versa, sometimes it does the opposite. That's only one aspect of the computer adaptation algorithm.
  18. Ok I thought he meant something else...I wasnt thinking about functions where that'd be the obvious thing to do. Thanks tho.
  19. Don't feel bad, believe it or not that's normal to underperform when you first test the waters and see how the exam is. My first diagnostic test was about 450/450. I was aghast considering I was hoping to get a minimum of 1000 without any studying and having been out of school for 7 years. This site has a lot of engineering people who naturally have an advantage in math. But I've also noticed that because there are so many folks that aren't native English speakers they score much less comparatively in verbal. They compensate by studying for months...which is really all you need: study time. Take a look at the GRE Powerprep software. They have some data charts of what most test takers score based on their diciplines and education level. You'll find that 1050 is pretty much the mean average for up to graduate level and about 1150 for PhD's! So these people here scoring 1400+ are far above the norm and not what you should judge yourself by. Btw, my girlfriend is a computer engineer and taken all the high level maths, calc 3, etc., but she doesnt remember much from geometry which is needed on the GRE. I haven't used geometry since 9th grade prior to review! So even math gurus like my girl can have problems without preparing for the test. You just have to study. Even a couple weeks worth before a test can boost your score by a good 200 to 300 pts when you are batting 1000.

    Plz Help Me

I don't think the front-end questions are more important than all the others when it comes to scoring. While its true each question is selected based on whether you got the previous one right, thats only one factor in how the CBT selects a question (according to GRE website). Just because you got the last question right doesn't always mean the next question picked is harder nor vice-versa. Consider if you were doing well half-way through and so many of the last 10 questions were the hardest...those are also weighted the most points. So if you totally bomb the latter half of the test you would have amassed less points by answering medium and easy questions correctly 2/3's of the way through. I think your best bet is to do well consistently throughout the test, and when you miss some questions, hope that they are spread out and not consecutive or in groups. That should average your curve better.
  21. I didn't elect to have the scores sent anywhere. I was going to pay the fee afterwards to have this done on request only if the scores were to my satisfaction. I took the test the first time with no prep just to see how tough it was and what I was getting into. I got only a 1000...like 450 math 550 verbal. I'm 29 and been out of school for awhile now and forgot all my math fundamentals. I'm testing again this month on the 20th after about a month studying full time. I'm also scheduled to take GRE again on Aug 1 to see if I can get even higher score the 3rd time. So basically I'll be requesting results sent out when I get a score I like. I'm applying for a USAF officer commission and the GRE is part of my package.
  22. Can you give me an example of what you mean by this technique?
  23. Not exactly true. You can retake the GRE and cancel previous results with the testing agency. I have done this and am taking it again this month. Only the second test's results will be reported because they will be the only ones available.
