Re: Need help defining a roadmap

Bayes gives excellent advice. First take some more serious math to see if you like it. If you don't, then you probably won't enjoy getting an econ PhD. You might also want to take a little more...

    Re: Health Insurance and Fees

Some universities cover health insurance--others don't. PhD programs don't generally care about the FAFSA. In our case we don't even see the FAFSA until all admissions and financial aid decisions are...

Re: ECON PhD Profile Evaluation (poor math grades)

The issue is whether Prof3 would write a stronger letter if it weren't going to Yale. Not something you really have much control over.

Re: ECON PhD Profile Evaluation (poor math grades)

Re: ECON PhD Profile Evaluation (poor math grades)

This is a good strategy. One more suggestion that I often give to my students. Make up a preliminary list of schools. Then ask your letter writers if they suggest either striking some or adding some...

    Re: FAFSA and Financial Aid??

The answer to this question may be different at different institutions. I can tell you that in our program students are required to fill out the FAFSA...and that it plays no role whatsoever in our...

Re: ECON PhD Profile Evaluation (poor math grades)

You don't need to be the best student at USYD to get into a top 15 program. You don't need a medal.

The people at USYD--most of whom have American PhDs--can give you good advice as to a reasonable...

Re: Economics PhD Admissions with a "soft" major

Basically yes, it is strong enough.
It would be better if you had at least an intermediate micro course as well. If you picked up some reasonable software skills in econometrics, you may well be...

Re: ECON PhD Profile Evaluation (poor math grades)

USYD is very good. If you have strong letters you should be in good shape.

Re: ECON PhD Profile Evaluation (poor math grades)

No worries. That one grade won't keep you out of top 30.

Re: Math preparation for Econ PhD

For top programs real analysis is necessary/ For 50-70, not always.

    Re: J-PAL RA letters

Initial screens for J-PAL and sister organizations are done by current RAs. DO NOT CONTACT PIs until you are well along in the process, if then.

    Re: J-PAL RA letters

It depends. You are right to be concerned. But it depends on the extent of the interaction between the RA and the faculty member.
