  1. Re: Advice for Undergrads interested in Grad School

The recording John mentions is now up at American Economic Association. Several other valuable recordings are there as well.

All these are mostly aimed at either faculty or graduate students, but...

  3. Re: How much will my undergrad affect my chances at top 10?

    Congrats!

If you're going to be doing both at the same time, that's going to be a lot of work. Probably best to concentrate on getting excellent grades.
  4. Re: How much will my undergrad affect my chances at top 10?

Note that the acceptance rate into EME is about 10 percent.

As you understand, you are short on math. Another path to consider is doing a pre-doc which will allow you to take more math courses...
  5. Re: Is it okay to have a reference list in SOP?

It's not unusual, although I doubt anyone really cares.
  6. Re: Does anyone know if the number of applications increase this year?

For us the number is for Econ PhDs.
  7. Re: Does anyone know if the number of applications increase this year?

I really only know about UCSB.

We have a small number of deferrals. We are not yet sure about the target size for our next class. Our hope is that it will be the same size as usual. However, we...

    Re: Strongly Mixed Profile Advice

The fact that you are named as a coauthor is significant. Publications have some value-added, but the letter is more important.

I have seen very few sole authored publications in good journals.
  9. Re: Does anyone know if the number of applications increase this year?

Our applications are up about 30 percent. Of course, we don't know whether that is applicants applying earlier, applying to more programs, or more applicants applying.

    Re: Strongly Mixed Profile Advice

Reconsider having your undergrad professor write a recommendation. "best undergrad ever" says a lot.

Re: Where will I get in? [Possibly mixed profile]

If you can do a two year pre-doc, it would probably move you up considerably in terms of admission probabilities. How important that is depends in part on your long-term goals.

    Re: RA in different Subject

Some, but much less. Some of the skills will carry over. But usually a recommendation letter is most valuable when it comes from an economist. There are some political scientists whose work is close...

Re: PhD Micro as an undergrad

Bayes makes a very important point. Econ grad students form study groups and work together. If you can't participate you are at a real disadvantage. (This is one reason you want to attend math camp.)

Re: PhD Micro as an undergrad

Taking PhD micro is the one course that provides a good signal. It shows you can handle PhD work. But yes, you need to get a good grade. You should also find out about attending your university's...

Re: Profile Evaluation - PhD in Economics

    (1) You may want your letter writers to send emails to colleagues they know at places you apply explaining about the change in GPA. That may help avoiding an autorejection at many schools.
    (2) I...
