My Target Scores

  1. My school offers undergraduate analysis and graduate analysis. However, in course content they are both undergrad analysis - both use Baby Rudin or similar level references. There are only two salient differences: 1. The undergrad version is called "Advanced Calculus" and the graduate version is called "Advanced Analysis". 2. The graduate version will have a harder curve by virtue of being full of graduate students. Should I be indifferent between them? If not, which one should I take?
  2. I'm interested in OB research. I am a Canadian PR holder so I thought I would focus on Canada. Stats: GMAT 750 Undergrad: Lahore University of Mgmt Sci (Pakistan) Undergrad GPA 3.59 Graduate: University of Oxford (M.Sc Management) Grad GPA: Upper second class honors Graduate: Emory University (MBA Goizueta) Grad GPA: Not Applicable Research experience; Currently working on a paper with Oxford Alums. Work experience: 7 years in HR and finance. I've been in the industry for 6 years post-MBA so I am trying to get back into research by doing an RA-ship.T Dream: Rotman Others: McGill, York, UBC, Queen's, Ivey, Alberta, HEC Montreal, Simon. Any advice? What are my chances given my relatively low undergrad GPA?
  3. Hello, I'm currently a junior at a private university (top 20 econ department). I am studying econ and math (double major), and I am in a dilemma right now: My GPA isn't good and I am expecting it to be around 3.64 by the time I graduate (assuming I graduate in 4 years). I was wondering if it is better to do an extra year and try to raise my GPA (while keep working as an RA). I have some research experience with a professor at my university, and this upcoming summer, I plan on working either with the same professor or a well known macroeconomist. Specifically, the two options I was thinking of were: 1. Stay an extra year - take more math courses and take grad-level courses (both econ and math) while keep working as an RA for the professor and try to raise my GPA. Question: If I do a fifth year, should I go for a dual degree? Does dual degree matter at the end? (If I were to do a dual degree, one downside is that I would have to take more undergraduate econ electives, which I find to be not very necessary of my time.) Also, do the admissions committees view doing a fifth year negatively? 2. Work as an RA under a well known economist after senior year (assuming I graduate in 4 years) - I know two well-known economists (not in my university) who are willing to work with me. Would this be a better option for me? Historically, my school has placed students in at least top 20 except one, who was placed in a top 40. Please give me some advice! :) Thank you in advance for your help.
  4. Hello Everyone, I have recently applied to some schools for this year but got rejected. I did, however receive an interview at LSE. Was wondering what I could do to enhance my profile. Test Scores (GRE): V: 160 (85th percentile) Q: 167 (92nd percentile) AWA: 5.0 (93rd percentile) Undegrad GPA: 3.83 (Bachelor of Science in Finance) at an average uni in the middle east Graduate GPA: 68% (Merit) at the LSE (Msc Finance), with a distinction in dissertation Research Experience: just masters' dissertation Teaching Experience: peer tutor, undergrad Work Experience: 1 year in sovereign wealth fund, 2 yrs managing own food distributions company Concentration Applying to: PhDFinance Number of programs planned to apply to: 5 Dream Schools: LSE, LBS Other Questions: What made you want to pursue a PhD? to do research and teach I am thinking of doing a graduate diploma in economics, and may be able to be a research assist a professor from Cambridge (he did his PhD at LBS). Not sure if its enough to get me through the door though. Also not sure how a graduate diploma would look after getting a masters degree, worried it may seem like a step down, maybe? Thank you for taking the time to read my profile :)
  5. Has anyone here looked at or applied to Stanford's GSB Research Fellows program? It's a two-year program with a full stipend where you're not a graduate student, but you take graduate classes and do research with mentors and stuff. I applied to it as well as some economics PhD programs (I have already gotten into one with funding) Stanford said they will let everyone know their acceptances by April 6th which would give me enough time to make a decision. I went to a pretty average undergrad and didn't apply to any top 10 because I knew that I would not be competitive. If I were to do this program, I would definitely become much much more competitive. BUT! Then it would add two years onto the already awful amount of time PhDs take. Would it be worth it? Did anyone else look into this or apply? Let me know what you think plssss :grief:
  6. Hi everyone, As admission decisions roll out for a number of graduate school programs, I am curious to see how many people have applied to the Western Mfe program, who has/has yet to hear back, where people stand with accepting their offers, and what other programs they have applied to. I am new to the Urch forums so I'm not quite sure how much of an audience this post will receive, but here goes nothing! Hope to hear back from some of ya!
  7. Hi, I have GRE score of 314 ( Verbal - 146 and Quant - 168 ) and TOEFL score of 96. I have a 76.44% in BE from VTU and also have 3 uears work experience from NetApp. I am looking for admissions in MS programs at SJSU, ASU, Texas A&M, Stony Brook, University of Masschusets,Ahmrest . What are my chances of admission to these colleges from MS in Computer Science ?
  8. I am applying for Masters in Science (MS) in Computer Science for Fall 2015. While going through the online application form, I came to know that under the "Recommendations" section, I have to provide names and emails of three recommendation providers. I just wanted to know whether it is mandatory to submit letter of recommendation electronically in addition to mailing them along with all the necessary documents or will just sending them by mail be enough ? Thank you.
  9. Hi! Need help, offer holder for MSc economics from UCL and MA economics from UCSB. I'm an international student (india) and was contemplating between UCL and university of California Santa Barbara (MA economics-1 year course). For me the prime factor is getting a job after the degree, could anyone tell me which one is a better bet in that respect? (US vs UK for getting a job) thanks! Any inputs would be highly appreciated. Kinda screwed right now
  10. Hey, I just wanted to know what the community thought of my chances: I'm a third year student at a state school. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BA Math + BA Econ Undergrad GPA: 4.0 GRE: Not yet taken Math Courses: Calc II (A), Multivariate Calc (A), Linear Algebra (A), Differential Equations (A), Proofs (A), Stats and Probability (A), Advanced Applied Linear Algebra (Pending) (Will be taking Math Modelling, Applied Stats, Numerical Analysis and maybe intro to real analysis) Econ Courses (grad-level): N/A Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intro Micro (A), Intro Macro (A), Intermed Micro (A), Intermed Macro (A), Game Theory (A) (Will be taking Graduate Advanced Micro, Money and Banking, Econometrics and will write a Capstone thesis) Other courses: Political science. Letters of Recommendation: Professors from Math, Econ and Political Science. Research: Potential position in a lab regarding financial markets. In addition, the proof based class was an introduction to fundamental mathematical proofs and covered number theory, algebra and set theory. I know that there is a page on real analysis requirements but is this level of proof knowledge okay? Or would I be better off taking a course in real analysis as well? How about the following institutions: Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, MIT, UChicago? Thanks!
  11. How much does having a couple of research work published in academic journals (not talking of any kind of top journal at all, but still academic journal) or refereed book chapter helps in an application for PhD? Lets say the backround is something like this: GRE Q165 V157 A 4.5, Toeffl ibt 110, good letters of recommendation, good undergarduate GPA in economics (top decil of class, graduated with honours), several math courses but not a matematitian. Thanks!
  12. I know that longer SOPs are not better but just longer. However I was wondering: How long-short are SOP's expected to be? :encouragement:
  13. I get that PhD programs are looking for research oriented, strong in math profiles. But: What kind of profiles are MA programs looking for? :onthego:
  14. This post is to help people balance their addmission prospect and maximize their addmission results. Two things are needed for this to work properly: honesty and honesty. Fill the following points and feel free to comment and help yourself and others make better decisions! STUDIES Country and program of undergraduate studies: Country and type of program (if any) of graduate studies: (GPA (preferable class percentile) , Distinctions, etc.): TESTS GRE: Q, V, A Toeffl: Other: RESEACH EXPERIENCE Research Assistant: Thesis or independent reseach: Published paper(s) (if aplicable): ADDITIONAL FACTS (IF ANY): - THINKING OF APPLYING TO (UNIVERSITIES/PROGRAMS): PhD: MsC: Other more subjective matters like SOP or LORS are left out on purpose. If have a doubt on the matter, be brief and post it in the "ADDITIONAL FACTS" row. Thanks
  15. Hey everyone! I'm new here and I really could use your help. Well, I just switched from eng to MBA. My passion is Economics and I really want to study that. I chose MBA, because the university has a double degree option in which I can have a degree from a Guatemalan university and an American university (I'm guatemalan). But after I'd like to apply for a master's in Economics. Do you think that's a good plan? Cos I'm only using this MBA as a "bridge" for the ME. And also, I'd like some financial aid for the ME, do you think that's possible? Any information will be appreciated and I'm willing to answer any question. Thank you
  16. HI! i wanted to know that how good and reputed is the LSE MSc. Economics and Management course?? and also how are its job prospects?? thanks! :)
  17. Hi In your opinion, which undergrad econ courses are most useful to students wishing to apply to graduate school? (I have already read about which math courses to take, but you can mention them as well if you'd like) Cheers!
  18. Hi all, I'm a mechanical aerospace engineer, finished my B.Eng in 2004 (from Montreal Polytechnique) and been working in the industry (Canada and US) since. I don't want to stay in this field since I've already peaked in my specialty and I'm looking for new challenges. I've developed a passion for economics over the years. I love reading books/articles written by economists. I love writing about economics myself and I want to go back to school to become an economist now. I'm also a mathematician by nature which is what got me through engineering and my successful career so far, more so than my interest for aircraft mechanics. I'm looking for some advice. Given my background, where should I start? a Minor in economics? Straight to the Masters? If I enjoy my Masters, I don't discard the possibility of continuing for a Ph.D. How important is the school I choose in this field? In engineering, the name of the school didn't matter, I've worked with people from different schools, with different reputations and we're all doing the same kind of work, same kind of money. Do different schools have different ideology? My goal is to do consulting, research, writing and eventually may be teaching or top government position. I feel very ignorant on the subject at this time, so any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

  21. Hi. I want to apply for an American University for MS in Computer Science in the Spring 2013 Batch. I want to know the universities which offer the course for the Spring Batch along with their rankings. I have just started working on it. How do I proceed for getting more information? Thanks.
  22. I just want to ask if any of u guys know why is it so hard to find an pharmacy internship for a foreign graduate at this time?
  23. I'm here to gain advice on my study approach to the GMAT. I've been out of college for 11 years. Graduated with a Bio, Chem, PreVet Med degree in under 3 years. Fresh out of college I accepted a job in finance and have been there ever since. I've been trying to make the crossover to Wealth Management and have been pigeon holed. So I'm going back to school to add to my tool belt. I understand it will be a long process sharpening my knowledge of the basics and what's required for the GMAT but any recommendations to study regimen and or materials would be appreciated. Twinsplitter and Ursula are the reason I joined this forum, and wanted to find updated information for my doing well on the GMAT. Thank you and look forward to being apart of your posts!! Driven
