  1. So this is a repost form yesterday because I posted in the wrong structure and I think it made many people unhappy, so here’s my profile in the right format: Type of Undergrad: NY state school, not ranked, not even best NY state college Undergrad GPA: 3.99 presently Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: 165V, 170Q, 4.5 AWA—got thrown by one essay, my first AWA was 5 but math is much better here Math Courses: Completed: Calc I-III, Intro to Proofs, Linear Algebra I, Introduction to Stats (freshmen level), A’s in all of these; in progress: Abstract algebra, linear algebra II, Introduction to Statistics/Probability (upper-level course); expecting A’s in each of these except maybe a B in Intro Stats/Probability. Will take next semester: Differential equations, real analysis, senior seminar. Econ Courses (grad): None Econ Courses (undergrad): intro and intermediate micro/macro, history of econ thought, public finance, international trade, econometrics, Econ Issues, Senior Seminar, Money and Banking, Intro to financial Management (finance course, counted as econ elective). Got A’s in all of these. Next semester taking Development and Forecasting for electives. Other Courses: Nothing really relevant; just wanted to say I got one undergrad in Econ with a 3.99 GPA at graduation (A- in public speaking), went back for two semesters to finish a math degree which I am finishing the first semester of now. Letters Of Recommendation: I have five profs willing to write, all econ because don’t know math profs that well. The three I will use most all still publish, one is my metrics prof, one is department chair, one is international trade Prof who just came to the college from UBC—I got the top grade in his trade class and he offered to write a letter for me. Research Experience: Had to write a senior thesis, got an A on it, but wouldn’t submit it as a sample; nothing professional for research Teaching Experience: I led a Calc II study group, which I might mention in SOP just because it’s all I have. Research Interests: Macro and international economics (trade, finance) SOP: Not great, on the end of working out the kinks; but the grammar will be good because I have a professional editor in the family. Concerns: The B in my upper-level stats class might be unavoidable at this point. Also I coming from a no-name school with no original research and have no non-academic extra-curriculars. Applying to: Duke…for kicks, Cornell, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Albany, Lehigh, Pittsburgh, Carnegie Melon, Penn State, Brandeis, BU, BC, Tufts, Rochester, Syracuse, SUNY Stonybrooke sdflkjhsdfkjhsdkjfhsk the the sdflksdjflksjdfl j
  2. Hi, I am new to this community and I am not quite sure on how I should post my profile details. I was educated in the UK, and thus my details do not fall into the tradition categories. However, I would be grateful for any feedback. Undergrad: BSc Economics (First Class Honours) from Top 3-4 in the UK, with high grades in my second and third year. Good feeback on my dissertation. Graduate: MPhil Economics; two year programme at Top 1-2 in the UK; research potential (as identified in the thesis) suitable for PhD Other: currently working full-time as special teaching staff and research assistant in my country's national university. GRE: Q165, V156, AW4.5 (english not native tongue) Letters of Recommendation: From my undergraduate personal advisor, who has only good things to say about me; my graduate thesis supervisor, who I think was happy with my work, and a professor at my current workplace for whom I worked as a research assistant on two different occasions. Teaching Experience: By the time the phd programme starts, I will have 2 full years of teaching under my belt. Research Experience: The two stints as a research assistant and my two dissertations. Research Interests: Mainly applied theory in microeconomics. IO, International trade, political economy. Also, Game Theory and econometrics. Concerns: The GRE quant score. Initially I was at the 92%, but now they have updated the results and I was relegated to the 91%. GRE Quant is the only changeable variable in my profile right now. While I talked with professor, who assured my that it's a satisfactory score, I started growing worry about it. Applying to: Mainly schools between the top 10-35. Also, a couple of schools in the top 10 Again I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thank you for your time.
  3. Hello everyone, I am applying for Ph.D in Econ this year for 2014, however I am having trouble finding a school that fits me. I am interested in behavioral econ, and the only departments that I found so far are NYU, UCLA, Berkley. Moreover out of all the schools only University of Zurich stood out to me the most with their program in neuroeconomics. I am also interested in labor economics, just for safety. I really need advice here, I feel like I am overlooking some schools and departments. Does anyone have an idea?
  4. Hello everyone, I am applying either in 2014 or 2015 for Econ Phd programs in US and abroad. Please evaluate and give me any suggestions! I really need advice! My stats Degree: UG at large public university (US) with top 30 econ department double major Math and Econ GPA: Math (4.0), Econ (3.9), overall 3.9 Type of Grad:n/a (planning to take a couple of grad courses in spring) math courses: integral calc (A), calc II with analytic geometry (A), ODE with PDE (A), graph theory (A), real analysis I (A), lin algebra (A), planning to take grad analysis, or grad complex analysis? econ courses: micro, macro (A,A-), intermed macro (A-), labor (A), econometrics (A), fin econometrics (A), some poli sci and philosophy electives, planning grad adv econometrics, and also taking intermed micro (fall 2013) gre: didn't take yet, but expecting above 165Q letters of rec: should be good, all econ profs, doing honors thesis with one of them (chicago phd) research experience: 2 summers spent doing undergrad econ research (one - at my previous school, not well-known undergrad), honors undergrad thesis in econ teaching experience: tutor on campus (mostly math and stats) research interests: econometrics, labor, public economics sop: didn't start yet a little worried since I don't have RA experience. What range of schools should I target and how I could improve my profile? I am also open to spend a couple of years abroad for MA. Thanks!
  5. Hi everyone. I've been lurking on these forums recently, and I was hoping to get some feedback on my profile for the coming year's application process. So here goes nothing: Type of Undergrad: Econ/Math combo major at large research university - ranked top 100 US Undergrad GPA: 3.96 Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: Registered to take it next month. I usually get 1 incorrect answer on each quantitative practice test (hopefully I eradicate that by August). Math Courses: Calc I/II/III (A/A/A), Linear Algebra (A), ODE (A), Intro Real Analysis (A), Discrete (A-), Probability Theory (A), Statistics (calc-based) (A), Optimization (A). I'm taking numerical analysis next semester as well. Econ Courses: Introductory Micro/Macro (A/A), Intermediate Macro (A), Intermediate Micro (A), 2 semesters of econometrics (A), Information and Uncertainty (A). I'm taking mathematical econ and banking/monetary policy next semester. Other Courses: Computer science minor (basic programming, algorithms, intro software engineering) Letters of Recommendation: I plan on getting one from my research adviser (Wisconsin PhD), as well as one from my metrics and banking professor (Princeton PhD). Third TBD (but from econ dept.). Research Experience: I was a research assistant for one semester and this summer with my professor listed above, studying the effect of options on baseball contract salary structure. I plan to use this research for a senior thesis, and my adviser said that we might publish. Teaching Experience: n/a Research Interests: applied micro, but no specific field as of yet. Possibly demographics, labor, or education. SOP: not written yet My main question is which range of schools I should target? I was thinking 20-30 based on what I see on these forums, but reaching up to some top 20 schools. Additionally, which non top-10 schools are best for applied micro? I'm mostly concerned with the fact that I don't attend a top ranked university for undergraduate. Will that keep me out of the top 20? I'm also concerned with my level of math and lack of graduate level econ. I feel like I should take one more analysis class, but I won't be able to until Spring semester. Will schools look favorably on that even if it's after the application process? Same goes for taking a grad level econ course. Thanks for the input, I enjoy reading these forums regularly!
  6. Hello everyone, I need help figuring out my chances of getting into Econ Ph.D programs in 2014. GPA: 3.9/4.0 Economics and Mathematics double major (3.9 GPA econ and 4.0 Math) from a large public college, doesn't offer Econ Ph.D. GRE: 156Q, 149V, 4.0 W ( will retake, however the verbal score wont be higher than 160, aiming for 165 and above for math). Research experience: was chosen out of 350 applicants for a summer research program at my school in Economics, Senior honors thesis in progress (in Econ and History) Tutoring and TA experience. Letters of rec: 1- from my summer mentor, not Econ ph.d but very well-published, 2- from my professor for Micro, Carnegie-Mellon graduate, 3- not sure whether to ask my thesis adviser, who is not an Econ professor ( History), or I know the chairperson for the econ department very well, but never taken a class with him. Courses: Calculus I, II, III (all As), Graph theory (A), Diff equations I and II (in progress), Probability course (in progress), Statistics (A), Numerical analysis (in progress) Economics: Macro (A-), Micro (A), Inter Macro (A-), Econometrics (A), Labor (A), Pol Economy (A), Econ and Ethics (in progress), Inter Micro (in progress), Financial Econometrics (in progress), Adv Labor (in progress) I will take the courses that are "in progress" during my senior year. Research interests: labor economics, behavioral econ, experimental, pol economy The reason why I haven't taken the courses earlier is that I changed my major in my junior year, so that's why I have to cram all the necessary courses in my senior year Which schools would be appropriate for my profile and whats the chance of getting funding? I was looking at Berkley and San Diego, also I was looking at some abroad like UZurich and Mannheim
