My Target Scores

  1. I got admits from 1. University of Florida Gainsville with scholarship of 4.5K dollars 2. Indiana University, Bloomington 3. Iowa State University I need your help in deciding the pros and cons. Suggestions of sort
  2. I have accepted to both UCSD and USC for PhD. I have got RA fund from USC and Fellowship from UCSD. I am more interested in the intersection of Theoretical CS and Machine Learning. Specifically I am interested in Social Network and Big Data Analysis. Could you please help me with my decision?
  3. Hi, I have been accepted into both these programs and having a hard time deciding between the two. I aspire to get a PhD in Economics from a top ranked university. Which of the 2 programs would you suggest? Factors to consider: Assuming cost is not a consideration and I am indifferent between London and New York as far as 2 yrs of Masters is concerned, which program presents better PhD prospects for me? My background: 1. Bachelors and masters in engineering from one of IITs in India - didn't do very well academically there 2. Worked in risk management in New York for a multinational financial institution for 3.5 yrs 3. Took some undergrad econ and math classes at Columbia on part-time basis and got straight As. 4. No research experience in economics as of now 5. One publication in machine learning in 2013 Thanks in advance.
  4. As the title says: which one of these is the best MA/MS Economics program as a stepping stone for a later PhD in Econ/PP? Opinions & advice will be highly appreciated!
  5. Hi all, I am interested in the field of Development economics and macroeconomics and want to pursue a Ph.D. post, my masters. I have received admission offers from the following universities for fall 2018. 1. Boston University (MA Economics, 1 year) - $57,000 (tuition) 2. University of Minnesota (MS Applied economics, 2 years) - $50,000 (tuition) 3. UT Austin (MA Economics, 1 year) - $21,750 (tuition after scholarship) 4. Vanderbilt University (MA Economics, 16-24 months) - nearly $30,000 (tuition after scholarship) Kindly advice me on which university should I opt for masters. I want to know about the following - 1. How are the job placements post masters, i.e., what is the average salary? 2. How easy/difficult it is to go from the master's programs of the above universities to their Ph.D. program? 3. How are the Ph.D. placements of the above universities - where do students go? Thanks!
  6. Hi, I have been admitted to Barcelona Graduate School's masters in economic program with full tuition waiver. When I researched I have seen that it has been highly praised for its macro classes. However I couldn't find any information on how it stands in econometrics. I would like to pursue a PhD afterwards (maybe in Upf if I can perform good enough) and I would like to do something in econometrics. I would be really grateful if you can share your thoughts or experience :)
  7. I have admits from these places. I am interested in behavioral/experimental economics. UCSC has one big name in this field (Dan Friendman) and even in my interview it looked like the professor was trying to hard-sell his program to me. I even got an email from Dan about UCSC's experimental lab and its strenghts etc. Wisconsin on the other hand (mind you, it's the business school, not econ department) has some nice work going on in behavioral economics in the context of health insurance choices (and possibly applied to asset allocation in general). My interest is also in household finance. Santa Cruz is a great place and Wisconsin winters are dreadful. Also, attrition at UW business is almost non-existent and their prelims do not have the traditional macro/micro/metrics requirement. UCSC has good record of corporate placements but not many academic placements. I am really confused between them. Requesting any guidance please !
  8. Hi! I am Melanie from the Philippines. I finished college here in the US and I am planning to enroll in a prestigious university for my MBA. I believe the process and application is tough so I want to ask for your thoughts and suggestions on this. I have worked for 6 years now, 3 different jobs and took my GMAT with a 650 score. What are my chances in HBS, Stanford and Wharton?

  10. M fiancee and I want to go to the same school for Master's in Economics. We got accepted to Texas A&M, University of Colorado-Denver, University of Missouiri-Columbia, Syracuse University and Clemson. Which one do you think is the best? Tamu seems good when we check rankings etc, but Master program is focused on Finance, and the class is so crowded. They have 160 students. Missouri and Syracuse has only 20 about people. My specific interest area is Economic Policy and my fiancee's is Public Economics. Does Tamu has a good prestige because of its Phd program, or its Master is good as well? Missouri's professors seems really good, from schools like MIT, but I couldn't find much information about the reputation of the program. Weather is a big drawback for Syracuse University, but they say it is a strong school. I will continue my education after Master as a Phd student, and I want to be well prepared for Phd. I want to stay in academia rather than working in private sector. I am afraid that I will not be able to find a scholarship or assistantship because of graduating a weak school. Which one of these schools is best do you think for my purposes?
  11. Hi, Since financial services is on the downturn, how much is realistic expectation of UChicago post-MBA salary ? Is an MBA worth the time or I should get a phd ?

  13. I got admits in Universitat des Saarlandes for a master's in CS, Uni-Potsdam for a master's in Cognitive System and Uni-Stuttgart for a master's in CS. Which should I attend, depending on its education and career aspects? 1- Universitat des Saarlandes (Computer Science) 2- University of Stuttgart (Computer Science) 3- University of Potsdam (Cognitive Systems) Which one to attend for winter 2015/16 intake? Need your suggestion! Thanks :)
  14. Hello everyone, I would like to have your opinion on the two following masters: ENSAE's MS Data Science and Barcelona GSE's master in Data Science. I come from an economics background (Toulouse). And for my part, I think both are good options if one wants a stats oriented data science program. I think that ENSAE is very well seen in France but it seems BGSE is more famous abroad. Here is a list of modules that kinda correspond! (first items are ENSAE's) Computational Statistics Christian P Robert Statistical Modelling and Inference Omiros Papaspiliopoulos Statistique asymptotique et robuste Patrice Bertail Deterministic Models and Optimization Marc Noy Base de données Michael Lippmann Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence Guglielmo Bartolozzi Développements récents en économétrie semi et non paramétrique Xavier D'Haultfoeuille, Anna Simoni Economics for the Era of Big Data Christian Fons-Rosen Apprentissage et datamining Arnak Dalalyan Machine Learning Gabor Lugosi Macroéconométrie (Séries Temporelles Avancées) Catherine Doz Financial Econometrics Christian Brownlees Modèles GARCH et à volatilité stochastique Christian Francq Stochastic Models and Optimization Mihalis Markakis Dataviz Kilian Bazin, Miglietti Data Visualization Michael Greenacre Evalutation of Public policies Pauline Givord, Anett John Quantitative Methods for Policy Evaluation Stephan Litschig, Joan Llull Statistical Analysis of Network Data with applications in Marketing Eric Kolaczyk Social and Economic Networks Joan de Martí Advanced Industrial Organization Claire Chambolle, Laurent Linnemer, Thibaud Vergé Quantitative Methods of Market Regulation Albert Banal Thanks!
  15. Hi everyone, I have a question regarding where to do my masters. Short background info about me: I did a triple bachelor (in my country thats possible) in economics, statistics and political science at a continental european university (internationally not very prestigious). During this time I spent a semester abroad in Europe, did an internship at a central bank, was TA a couple of times and parttime RA/TA for one professor at my department for about one and a half years. Now about the master: I got accepted at LSE MSc in International Political Economy and for the LSE/Science Po Double Degree which includes one year at Sciences Po at the master in in International Economic Policy and the second year the MSc in International Political Economy at LSE. I am not sure which of these master programs I should attend. Basically the decision comes down to doing a one year master at LSE or studying first a year in Paris and then doing the same one year master at LSE. The dilemma is now due to the fact that I want to apply for a Political Economy PhD at US/UK universities in fall 2016. If I do the one year program at LSE I can finish my master thesis during the summer and apply afterwards. This would hopefully give me some quite strong LORs (especially from my thesis supervisor). However I then have one year off where I have not yet decided what to do (work at an NGO, private company, you name it...). If I do the two year program instead I can apply after the first year in Paris while studying in London. This would me give the advantage of not having one year off in between master and PhD. My concern is however, that the LORs of Sciences Po might not be that strong compared to the ones I could potentially get from LSE (Although Sciences Po is very good in PolSci their reputation in economics is somewhat mediocre). I don't know whether having two prestigious universities in my CV outweighs the potentially worse LORs. Any helpful advise is greatly appreciated :).
  16. I am unable to take a decision and my BGSE deadline is this Thursday. Given I want to specialize in Macroeconomics and that both schools are strong in Macro, my assessment of the situation is as follows. Given the Program/department reputations and the cost benefit analysis, the only reason to choose the MA Economics at Columbia over BGSE would be because of it's brand name (Ivy League) and probable advantage in getting into a top PhD program in the USA. Although I'm not sure about to what extent the Columbia program (with all advanced courses as elective) would give me a better chance vis-a-vis BGSE (Advanced track) in getting into a top PhD. Plus it's their first year as a Masters program. Also I have questions as to what extent the Star Faculty at Columbia would be involved in the MA program. Plus there is another debate about the PhD courses oriented nature of a European masters vis-a-vis a professional bent of an American Masters. I would be grateful for any insights, suggestions and ideas. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
  17. Hi, this is my first post on Urch. My Background: Completed my bachelors in Mechatronics and have great passion for Machine Learning. Working with IBM, India. I recently got a admit in Aalto University's MLDM program. Just wanted to know how good the program is? And please suggest me any other good university with exclusive ML program (not general Computer Science programs, I dont want to study Compilers, Architecture, OS). Thanks!
  18. Hello, I read through quite a few threads on here talking about different Masters programs (many of them mentioned Cornell and UIUC). None of them directly compared the two programs, and I had a few quick questions about people's thoughts. I have no desire to get a PhD or go into academia or go into research, so I'm just trying to go back into industry after my degree. I did not study CS in undergrad and have worked as a web developer for the past 2 years, so part of my hopes is to gain some CS knowledge that I never learned in undergrad (I've only taken a intro to programming course and a intro to algos and database course in undergrad). The other part of my hopes is to explore AI/ML/Big data. Hopefully I can get a job in AI/ML/Big Data if I like it, but I'm also hoping that the knowledge I gain at my masters will allow me to switch to other CS fields if need be. People seemed to be down on a course based masters, which is what UIUC would be. Cornell is also course based, but also offers a year long project and an adviser. I'm not sure exactly how much interaction I would have with an adviser, but at UIUC I would have none. Does this offer any advantages in industry? Cornell is only a 9 month program, and I remember reading that 1 year is not nearly long enough to learn anything and that I'm just paying for a pay increase. I'm hoping to gain further knowledge in CS with a masters, so I definitely actually want to learn. UIUC is 1.5 years and offers an internship before having to find a full time job, which is enticing. But obviously my goal is to get out as soon as I can and restart my career. I'm hoping to be able to take most of the same courses at Cornell as I would at UIUC (I know some will be sacrificed due to the shorter program), but I'm not sure if that'll just be way too stressful and hectic. I completely understand that both choices are great and both schools are ranked pretty much the same. Cornell costs more, but assuming I find a job right away, the earlier graduation will offset any cost difference.
  19. I got admission offers from columbia(ma in statistics) and michigan ann arbor(applied statistics). I was leaning toward columbia university, considering its reputation, the merit of the big city and the short period of completion. (1-year) The problem is that I heard several times that the program is not that good and even easy to enter. I am worried that it would be a problem if I decide to go on to do phD in the future. (I have not decided yet to go on to do phD or come back to the industry. This is a big decision, so I do not want to fix this matter right now.) Also, it is hard to give up the university of michigan, as I know that michigan is more highly regarded in the field of statistics. Thank you in advance for your helpful advice. (P.S. tuition and life expenses are not my concern as I have planned this for a long time.)
  20. Hi everyone, I am working with Ernst and Young in India since July 2012 (post completing B.A Economics Honours from University of Delhi). I have received an offer of admission from UIUC for the MS in Policy Economics (MSPE) and from SUNY Buffalo for M.A Economics. Could someone provide me details on these programs, departments and the student environment? Does MSPE have a chance of even partial funding? Also, which of these 2 programs should an international student pick with an aim of finding a job in the private sector in USA after graduation.
  21. Hi, My name is Satabdi. I have been accepted into the Masters Programme for Computer Science at both Saarland University and University of Freiburg. Which program would you advise? Thanks for all the replies. Yours Sincerely, Satabdi Ganguly

Hi, I am really confused about few options I have My Profile Indian Age -27, 3 years work experience in Business Consulting, MBA from a fairly good institute in India and I have a strong Finance and Law background Academic orientation for Behavioral Economics but I will be happy to with a job , if it pays well. I have been given an admit in Barcelona GSE- Competition and Markets Regulation program, UC3M- Industrial Economics and Markets program, Tilburg- Master of Finance and Aalto School of Business - Master of Economics Pros and cons BGSE- Applied for Econ got selected for Competition and Markets Regulation program Pros-big brand name, rigorous curriculum Cons-9 month duration, hard to get a job though because of work permit issues (rules for Non-EU in Spain), 14000 EURO Fees Competition Consulting virtually non- existent in India and not sure if I will get job in US (BGSE as a brand name in US, finding a sponsor would be a problem) UC3M - Applied for Econ got selected for Industrial Economics and Markets program Pros-Brand name Cons- not sure about program - Industrial Economics and Markets program, hard to get a job though because of work permit issues (rules for Non-EU in Spain) Tillburg - Applied for Econ got selected for Masters in Finance Pros- Brand name, chances of getting job and work permit are good Cons- Not really the area of my interest, but can go for it if placements are good Aalto School of Business - Applied for Econ got selected for Econ Pros- One of the oldest universities, free education, 2 year duration, Economics - Finally!, getting work permit won't be tough Cons- Not sure how good it is in Economics area, not even sure about job prospects upon completing or even getting accepted for research by other colleges I am inclined towards Aalto, only college where I have got Economics admit, but I am not sure if its worth it, my next preference in BSGE for big brand name and good course but again not sure if I will get a job even outside Europe.
