I am planning to take an Accounting PhD soon and am curious about alternative careers just in case the academic job market dries up by the time I finish my PhD in 6 to 7 years time. I am not expecting to land at a top-ranked uni and will probably study in the lower-ranked schools (maybe top 50 to 100). For Business PhD graduates not just in accounting but also in finance, marketing, OB, and others, do industry firms generally stay away from them? What types of industry roles are suitable for PhD graduates given the skills they get in gradschool? For example and to be more specific, can business PhD graduates ride the current big data and machine learning trend and work as a data scientist?

Hi, this is my first post. I've been on this forum, reading comments and gaining a lot of insight, but I decided to post a question and hope I can get some answers. I'm an African but came to the States for college, got my bachelors in Economics. However it was a bachelors in arts, so I only took one calculus class. I'm currently in a masters program in public administration because I wanted to be involved in policies that help my country and/or fellow third world countries. After my first year in the program, I realize that the major it is too broad for me. I did take econometric classes and public finance but it's still more political oriented that I imagined. I want to be involved in research and analyzing socioeconomic policies, using quantitative and economic principles. However, my poor math background prevents me from trying to major in Agricultural or development economics. So what kind of options are there for me, if I want to work for a multilateral development bank or intergovernmental organization , except taking 4 or 5 more math classes to meet the bare minimum to be admitted in a lower tier economic school (I plan on doing that but if there are no feasible options). Thank you
