  1. The arguments made to prove Corporateville is a superior place to live compared to Middlesburg are flawed and void of substantial proof. When a company headquarters changes location, there are different factors considered than when an individual or a family makes the same move. The truth that there has been a recent surge in the number of homeowners in Corporateville does not prove that it is a superior place to live compared to Middlesburg. There can be many reasons for this surge outside of the fact that SuperCorp recently moved its headquarters to Corporateville. There is the possibility that a myriad of other companies have also moved to Corporateville, not only SuperCorp. Also, just becuase a company moves headquarters does not mean the employees must move with the company. Some employees may have a lease that they cannot afford to break, or have wonderful neighbors they do not want to leave. Corporatesville may have recently installed a large amusement park that people want to live near. The assumtion that employees must move where their job headquarters is located cannot be justified. The survey data showing that SuperCorp employees prefer to live in an area that is not urban means nothing with respect to the recent surge in the number of homeworners in Corporateville. Corporateville cannot be the only non-urban city in a commutable distance from SuperCorps headquarters. In addition, the survey data may not even be an accurate representation of all the employees at SuperCorps. The survey may have targeted people with families or people within a certain age or race demographic. There is no proof that the survey was unbiased and/or all inclusive of every employee at SuperCorps and therefore, cannot be an accurate representation of the company. While it is understandable for a company to make a move to a new town due to tax cuts and a safer environment, there are different factors to be considered when singles, couples, and families make the same transition. For example, not every employee is in a finacially stable enough situation to be able to move with the company. In addition to financial stability, other employees may have other commitments to Middlesburg such as a spouses current job or the school their child attends. Moving from one town to the next requires more thought and reasoning besides a tax cut. The arguements in favor of Corporateville as a superior place to spend life and time have no true meaning. There are many more factors to consider when an individual, and especially a family, makes a move from one town to another. These factors were not considered and therefore, the argument was weak and couldn't provide all the proof needed to make the claim that Corporateville is a better place to live.
  2. While the author states that most of the American Universities occupied the largest portion in the list of top universities, it is totally obscure that whether the Universities rated are from wide range of courses and fields. The universities which are listed as Top Universities may belong to the same specific field, say, Computer Science. The author never mentioned about the variety of fields taken into account for the survey. Secondly, the author indicates that most of the world's laureates and scientific papers are established by Top American Universities. Here, a large number of critics can be raised with respect to this context. For example: What is the ratio of the total number of universities in America to the Universities that produce achievements? If the number of universities is much higher than the achievements produced, then it would result a negative impact in author's statement regarding American Higher Education. Moreover, it is not explicitly stated whether the papers and laureates produced belong to a specific field of interest or from wide variety of fields. Hence, it marks the statement of author that "Scientific output of American institutions is unparalleled". The author also suggests that college graduates earn more than the people with no degree on an average. However, this may not be true since the percent of college students who earn more than the others is not mentioned. Additionally, the author presents that there is growing anxiety in America regarding higher education. With a deep insight into this statement, it is clear that irrespective of top universities and number of achievements made, there is a increasing anxiety. This may not only due to increased student debts but also due to other factors such as the involvement of students, study environment, harassment in study place. Thus, irrespective of the academic achievements made by the Universities and high pay of college graduates, the author believes that a inner state turmoil is prevailing in America regarding higher studies due to high debts and low returns. But this many not be true since there are many plausible fallacies and the author doesn't provide any cognitive flow of ideas.
  3. Hello everyone! I'm preparing for my GRE and I'm having a lot of difficulties with the math section so I've been focusing on that part for the last two months and I think I underestimated this section. Argument Analysis is particularly tricky I think so I'd really appreciate if you could take some time and share your suggestions with me! Any criticism will help! Thanks a lot in advance! The following appeared in a memo from the director of student housing at Buckingham College. "To serve the housing needs of our students, Buckingham College should build a number of new dormitories. Buckingham's enrollment is growing and, based on current trends, will double over the next 50 years, thus making existing dormitory space inadequate. Moreover, the average rent for an apartment in our town has risen in recent years. Consequently, students will find it increasingly difficult to afford off-campus housing. Finally, attractive new dormitories would make prospective students more likely to enroll at Buckingham." Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument. The idea of building new dormitories for the students of Buckingham College, whose matriculation number is growing, seems to respond to the rising housing prices in the area and therefore accommodate the needs of its prospective students. While these arguments amount to a convincing proposal, further information is necessary in order to fully comprehend the issue. First of all, detailed information on current dormitories and the ratio of students living in and off campus is necessary. Should we learn that the current dormitories exceed the university’s needs and that the costs of their maintenance exceed their revenues, this project would be very unlikely to be approved by the Board. L Linked to the previous question, is the issue of the university’s budget. In order to approve or refuse this proposal, a clear idea of the university’s financial situation would have to be taken into an account in order to understand whether the university can actually undertake such an ambitious and financially challenging endeavor. General budget should also be evaluated together with any possible mandatory project the university already approved or intends to implement. While dormitories represent an important aspect of the campus, facilities such as the library, gym, perhaps the pool etc. may need urgent restoration, which would significantly shrink the budget. In addition to the financial situation of the university, possible announced reforms of the higher education could significantly alter the expected number of future applicants, therefore curving the estimation on future students and their need of Buckingham dormitory. For example, in 2012 when British authorities raised tuition ceiling for 200%, the British university saw a decrease of 15 000 students in a single academic year. This is why these projects based on statistical prognostics need to be studied together with economic visions of tomorrow. Lastly, considering that the author of the text implies that new dormitories could serve to incite prospective students to apply to this university, past surveys of high school graduates could shed light on the applicants’ methods of selection in order to ensure that a factor such as dormitory does, in fact, rank as a potent variable, capable of alluring prospective students. All in all, while the author of the text makes compelling arguments that could possibly ameliorate the quality of the students’ life at Buckingham University, further information on the university’s financial situation and effective need for new dormitories is indispensable in order to assess the entire suggestion.
  4. Hello there and thank you in advance for your time and attention! I took my first practice exam today and my scores were 690-790 Quantitative and 300-400 Verbal, At the verbal section, I have seen some words that I've never seen in my life! :) If you could also share your thoughts about my first scores, that would be really really helpful for me. Thank you once again, Best wishes, Ethan, Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increasingly more time to covering national news and less time to covering weather and local news. During the same time period, most of the complaints we received from viewers were concerned with the station's coverage of weather and local news. In addition, several local businesses that used to run advertisements during our late-night news program have just cancelled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to our news programs and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should expand the coverage of weather and local news on all our news programs. The author of the argument states that the reason of the decreasing advertising revenues and lower number of viewers is the short lenght of the weather and local news. The author provides a premise to support his argument. In this premise he states that the late-night news program used to keep the weather and local news longer in the past and they did not have any problems like the ones mentioned above. The argument of the author, who is the manager of the television stations, is poorly reasoned. The assumption of the argument do not depend on healthy evidences. Therefore the argument needs to be evaluated once again by considering some essential factors such as the type of the complaints and the economic situation of the local businesses. Firstly, there is not enough information about the type of the complaints. Maybe the viewers are happy with the lenght of the weather news but they are not happy with the person who presents this news or they want to see more detailed information about the local weather status. Since the weather news usually takes shorter time period, the reason does not have to be the lenght of the weather news. Furthermore, the author makes the same assumption for the local news. Maybe the late-night news program places the local news after the national news and this could be the main reason of the complaints. The viewers might just want to see the local news at the beginning of the late-night news program. Therefore more premises should have provided by the author to make a better argument. Secondly, author provides another premise related with the advertising contracts. He suggests that the local businesses cancel their advertising contracts because of the complaints of the viewers. One more time, this is not a strong premise. There could be a local economic recession and many local businesses could have to close downs their businesses. Then these local businesses would not have enough capital to support the late-night news program. There is no information related with the reason of the issue of the advertising contracts is given by the author of the argument. In sum, it could be said that the assumptions of the business manager of the television station are weak and poorly reasoned. The argument should be evaluated once again by the factors those mentioned above. In this way, a better and stronger argument can be developed by using more detailed premises.
  5. The following appeared as a letter to the editor from a Central Plaza store owner. "Over the past two years, the number of shoppers in Central Plaza has been steadily decreasing while the popularity of skateboarding has increased dramatically. Many Central Plaza store owners believe that the decrease in their business is due to the number of skateboard users in the plaza. There has also been a dramatic increase in the amount of litter and vandalism throughout the plaza. Thus, we recommend that the city prohibit skateboarding in Central Plaza. If skateboarding is prohibited here, we predict that business in Central Plaza will return to its previously high levels." Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation. It is very easy to assume that skateboarders, who are usually teenagers, would be responsible for the increase in litter and vandalism. Most people associate the youth as being irresponsible and careless and there seems to be an assumption that skateboards are even more so reckless. Similarly, it would be safe to assume that their presence may keep other customers away, which would result in a decrease in sales for the surrounding business. However, this strong correlation does not necessarily prove that they skateboarder cause these events to occur. In order to prove the skateboarders are to blame the author most prove that the increase in litter and vandalism and decrease in sales is only due to the skateboards and not any other outside factors. One such outside factor is the economy. Research reports have shown that when the economy struggles there is a decrease in sales and an increase in theft and violence. The committee making the decision would have to prove that the recent downfall of the economy would was not responsible for the decline in Central Plaza sales. A possible suggestion would be to gather data from similar geographical areas that were hit by the economy and prove that overall business sales did not take financial hits. The purpose of this data would show that the economy was not the main factor in decrease in business sales. Another component that needs to be addressed is business appeal. If central plaza contains businesses that are out of touch with current styles, then a lack of buyers interest may be the cause and not the skateboarders. In addition, the committee would have to investigate if all business where affected, or just particular stores. If only particular stores, for example expensive furniture stores were affected, then a lack of interest may be a possible factor. The committee would have to compare if profits in all stores took a fall. Furthermore the number of shoppers may have decreased but this does not mean that sales in all business decreased. Shoppers may be only purchasing items from certain stores, again business appeal and profit numbers would answer theses questions. In addition to business appeal, another factor to consider is local competition. The committee would have to scan the local area to see if new businesses outside the Central Plaza have opened. The local competition may be a driving factor that is keeping shoppers away and business sales down In regards to increase vandalism and littering, the committee would have confirm that in the absence of the skateboarders there is a decrease in vandalism and littering. Since most skaterborders are young teenagers, then a solutuion is too look at the amount of littering and vandalism that takes place during school hours and after school hours. Another suggestion would be to take data during the summer and compare it to the school year. If the results show there is a dramatic increase in vandalism and littering when the skateboarders are most likely to be there this would strengthen the case against skateboarders. While it may sound easy and logical to point the finger at the skateboards, the author must prove that economy, local competition and consumer appeal do not have an influence in the sale of the Central Plaza. If the author were to provide such evidence then it would strengthen the request against the skateboarders.
