  1. Hello everyone! I am currently in my last year of undergrad, and I am interested in getting my PhD in accounting. I am really unsure as to where I should start in this entire situation, and I was hoping I could gain a little clarity as to what I could focus on. Undergrad: 3.86 GPA in Accountancy and Finance. Graduated in 3 years from a top accounting school. Graduate: Will be completing my MAcc in the upcoming year. GMAT: Never taken an actual exam, I have scored in the 740-750 range on practice exams. Courses: Have completed a variety of courses related to accounting and finance. Macro, micro, and intermediate micro economics. A variety of statistics courses. Calc 1 and 2. Teaching experience: I am the head TA for a course related to business management, and teamwork. I am, also, planning on teaching accounting courses for duration of my MAcc. Research: I have little research experience, but I am looking at being a research assistant at my University in the upcoming semester. Work experience: I have held an internship in the past, and I will be interning at a big four accounting firm next Summer. Letters of rec: I have multiple people that I know would be willing to write a letter of rec for me. One of them has a strong background in research, and others are in accounting academia. Weaknesses: Most obviously my work and research experience. Letters of rec I think are also something I could improve on. Also, my math background is also very weak. Questions: Are there any courses that you think I should try taking over the next year? Should I apply to PhD programs in the upcoming Fall, or should I wait until I have more tangible work experience? What are my biggest weaknesses to an observer? I am a little lost in this entire process, and I really appreciate any and all feedback that you guys have for me. Thanks for taking the time to read my post. :)
  2. Would applying to more than one program (say Economics and Applied Economics) at one school hurt my application?

  4. Hi everyone, I have finance PhD offers from UBC Sauder and Rochester Simon, but now I have a chance to work as full-time RA for an institute led by Prof.Thomas Sargent and will hopefully get a letter from him if I re-apply for finance PhD this December. I know there is some opportunity costs and I might be rejected next year due to all possible reasons and the subjective perception of being rejected once. So should I reject my offers and re-apply? And if you were me, which school would you choose? Why? Any advice will be immensely appreciated! BTW OP is a applying with a master degree from China.
  5. Anyone else experiencing issues in submitting to PhD Econ Berkeley? Website states that deadline is on 8:59 pm Pacific Standard Time, but I have tried to submit since 2 am and gradapp insists that the deadline has expired. Suggestions?
  6. Hi guys, I am planning to apply for Econ PhD starting on Fall 2017. But I am not sure which range of schools I should apply for. Hope you can give some advice. Specific school recommendations are welcome. Thanks. PROFILE: Type of Undergraduate: Bachelor in Economics, top university in China, not well-known worldwide Undergraduate GPA: 3.6 (Top 15%) GRE: TBD Math Courses: Mathematical Analysis(for three semesters), Linear Algebra, Intro to Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics. Econ Courses: Micro and Macro, Financial Economics, Economic History, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics. Electives: International Trade, Environmental Economics, Investment Principles, Law and Economics, Game Theory, Derivatives Analysis and Experimental Economics. RA Experience: RA at the Financial and Economics Experimental Lab of my university since October 2014; RA for one project led by one Harvard professor, stayed at Harvard for one month last winter and work remotely now; Research internship (12-week) at UBC now. Letter of Recommendation(Probably): 1 from Harvard professor(well-known), 1 from one professor of my university (also teaching in one good U.S Liberal Arts College) and 1 from my research internship supervisor of UBC. How much chance do you think I have of being accepted by Top 10 and Top 20/30? Where? And should I apply for a master program firstly? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.
  7. Hello, I'm in a bit of a trouble as of now because I haven't gotten any answer from one of my letter writers. Long story made short; I did an MSc in Econ at a top European department, I didn't excel in everything, but I managed to get some really good grades in a few classes. Because of this, three professors agreed to write LoRs for me for the PhD application process. I talked to them in April, and then tried re-confirm and set up the details in August. Two of them already said yes, however one of them hasn't answered any of my e-mails (I'm not in Europe anymore, which obviously complicates things). Now, this last professor is fairly famous and therefore really busy, so it might very well be that he hasn't had time to read any of my e-mails. However, since I didn't get any answer back, I contacted his assistant, who in turn forwarded my e-mail to him. So I can almost be 100% certain that he read it and actively decided to ignore it. His assistant also told me to call him at one particular time, because he would be at his office, but I couldn't reach him via phone either. Now naturally, given that he is the most famous one of my recommenders, I really need his letter. What baffles me is that he was super nice when we spoke in April and said he'd gladly write the letter. And, while I understand that he is insanely busy, an answer of the type: "I've read your e-mail, I'm pretty busy atm, we'll arrange the details later" would be enough. I would like to know if anybody has been in a similiar situation or if anybody has some suggestions about what course of action to follow. I don't want to pester him with e-mails and calls, in case that makes him say he won't write the letter anymore. But I also don't want a lot of time to pass and then two weeks before deadlines, have him say he doesn't have time to do it, or he'll simply won't do it. Any advice/comment is welcome. Thanks a lot! Cheers!
  8. Hello everyone, I am Brazilian and have had a low undergrad GPA (2,8 or 2,9) in economics, with grades swinging from excellent and very poor all the way throughout it (major depression episodes) (math scores were bad). But I managed to get better and got into a top 7 econ master's in Brazil (selection here is made by a tough test in macro, micro, math and statistics/econometrics). Did very well in undergrad macro (88 (A-) and 100 (A+) and in this test (98th percentile). Did a relatively good job in my masters, with GPA at 3,5. i feel confortable with the math required for grad school now (not much proofs, but can do fine through linear algebra, calculus and differential equations). I'm working on my dissertation in english and will have at least 1 good recommendation letter. I'm planing to take real analysis and retake some calculus and linear algebra to get better grades. Do I have any chance to get into a 75-100 department in US? I'm thinking about SUNY-Buffalo, UNC-Chapel Hill, SUNY-Albany, U of Houston, UC Riverside, etc. May try UIUC but without much hope =) thanks in advance for any help
  9. Dear all, I am a econ master student in China. I will apply to PhD next fall. GPA and English scores are OK to me, but my current research experience bothers me a little bit. For now I have two sets of research ongoing, in different fields. One is labor and marriage, coauthored with my advisor and another prof. We will have two working papers ready by next summer and I will present in conferences. My advisor will also give seminars in US (including a top10 dept.) in spring about these projects. I also have a coauthored labor paper ready to submit (we will try from an A journal but maybe ended up in a tier-2). I think I will choose labor to be the primary field in my application. However, I also have a submitted paper in international finance, which was coauthored with a junior faculty one year ago. But it will be, if published, only a tier-3 paper and really not my field in the future. With this prof., we also have an ongoing project on corporate finance. It's very likely this one can also generate a working paper and start conference presentation upon my application. Corporate finance may be my secondary field because I am also interested in it. Will these experience make me look like not focusing and hurt my application to labor? I think I will say in my PS that through all these research my interest in labor becomes more clear, and I may consider combine labor and corporate governance in future research. But not sure whether that's enough. I will appreciate it a lot if you could provide some advice on how I can make my application sharper. Thanks in advance!
  10. I am a rising senior of a top 30 liberal arts college in US with 3.96 GPA. I took my GRE two weeks ago and got V163 + Q 170 + W 4.0. I am looking forward to applying for an econ phd program rank 10-15. I wonder whether I have to retake GRE simply because my writing is too low? Thank you so much for advice!
  11. I'm an third-year econ major. Have taken math courses including advanced calculus I-III, advanced algebra I-III, mathematical statistics I-II, and probability theory I-II. Unfortunately my school doesn't allow us to take more advanced ones such as real analysis. So I'm thinking about taking GRE math sub later. How helpful is it in econ phd application, for someone without a strong background in math (like me)? Thanks.
  12. Should I expect to know the admission results for PhD programmes soon (next two weeks maybe?)?
