During my sophomore year, I chose courses that were very hard for me, resulting in 7 late drops and 6 of them in my sophomore year. (I enrolled in the courses credits celling every semester!) 2. I have been trying the econometrics of the Honor version and web courses consecutively, so I did LD twice and only got a B in the end. Therefore, I have also taken many statistics courses to prove my abilities. 3. I got C+ in Intro Mathematical Analysis 1. B in intermediate economics. 2. Hi I have started considering applying to Finance Ph.Ds as a diversification option for Econ phd applications or perhaps as a first choice given some of the advantages that business school phds seem to have. A profile evaluation is appreciated. All advice pointing out differences or similarities between the two application processes is welcome. Stats: University of Southern California Double Major in Mathematics and Economics Overall GPA: 3.88 Math Courses: Calc 1-3: A Linear Algebra: A Probability Theory(MVC prereq): A- Mathematical Statistics: A Real Analysis 1+2: A Topology: A Advanced Linear Algebra B+ Econ Courses (All A grades): Intermediate Micro + Macro Econometrics Advanced Econometrics Thesis course I've taken 3 programming courses for A grades. I was in the honors research program at my Economics department and have good contacts with the professors there if that is relevant. I have never taken a business or finance course. I'm currently working a finance job in a boutique asset management firm and plan on staying here for two years. Not sure if my profile is appropriate at all? Or if it is, where I should be applying. Thanks all.
  3. Hi, I am 46 years and want to apply for PhD in Strategy. I have had experience in Corporate Strategy as well as in academic think tank institutes. I have also worked with a top Strategy professor as part of the think tank group. Will my age be considered as a challenge in my PhD application? What would be the best way to overcome that? I am posting in this group to get more reliable advice. Officially no university can discriminate on age. I want to prepare an application that may address their concern, if any. Thank you, Regards Gowrishankar
  4. Hi guys, I am new member in this forum. Nice to meet you all! I'm here mainly to get some advice for my Econ PhD application since my case is pretty rate. All the best!
  5. Hey guys, I have recently completed my MBA Finance from Australia and looking forward to do a PhD in Finance. I haven't started my application process yet and looking forward for a guidance. Would be thankful if anyone can help me out in the process.
  6. Hi, I'm taking a bunch of math courses and a few econ courses before applying in fall '22 cycle. Some schools have deadlines in early December. In these instances, will they look at the courses that I take in fall semester 2022? I'm planning on taking Analysis during that semester, and want the course grade to have posted by the time they consider my application. Are those fall courses generally taken in to account by adcoms?
  7. Looking for information and help with the application process.
  8. There are more economics info for me. It is nice to know that people are providing useful information here to create more transparent application process! I hope I can contribute some useful posts, too!
  9. Hi. Are you aware of any PhD program in Business Administration/Management in Canada that is still accepting new applications? I've applied to 6 programs last December, and it looks like I didn't get in any :upset: I really can't wait for a whole year! Good options in the US would also be appreciated :loveheart:
  10. Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows if the number of application increase or decrease this year?
  11. So I submitted my application to NYU Stern, and there's a red X next to the transcript. I only uploaded an unofficial transcript, but noticed just now that the website says they require an official transcript. Does anyone (preferably someone else who has applied to NYU) know what I should do, or how I can get an official transcript to them? Their office is closed until Jan 3, which is after the deadline. Also as a side note, the application proof isn't loading - is that true for anyone else? Update: I uploaded an official copy through the status portal and now there is a green check mark, so that's nice. The application proof still isn't loading though, if anyone else is having issues with that.
  12. I'm here to know about graduate programs and related information. It is nice to know that people are providing useful information here to create more transparent application process! I hope I can contribute some useful posts, too!
  13. Hey fam, I'm starting to get a little anxious as I finish up and submit my applications. I'd love some input on my application and any other advice you have. Thanks! Micro OB/Management PhD applicant Test Scores (GMAT) 720/800 (94%), V: 41/51 (94%), Q: 47/51 (60%), AW: 5 (56%), IR: 7 (81%) Undergrad GPA: 3.84/4.00 overall, BS in Psych from a solid private school Graduate GPA: none Research Experience: 2 years, part-time with 3 faculty, econ, OB and Psych. Worked 0-20 hr./week depending on need. Also did several research projects in my research based classes (research design, psych testing, stats in psych, writing in psych, etc.), Research tools: R, Stata, Qualtrics. Teaching Experience: 1 semester as a TA for psych. Work Experience: 1 year in HR consulting/training as a project manager. Letters of Rec: OB professor I did research with, Psych professor I did research with, Psych professor I had 3 classes with and is a mentor/friend. Concentration Applying to: Micro OB, interested in Business/Behavioral Ethics, Meaning at Work, Positive Org Scholarship, Moral Psych. Number of programs planned to apply to: I've applied to 9 as of now, may apply to a few more. Dream Schools: Harvard, Michigan, Washington Other Questions: What made you want to pursue a PhD? - I thought the career would be intellectually stimulating, flexible, and challenging. I thought research could make an impact and that teaching/mentoring would be meaningful as well. Questions or concerns you have about your profile? - Concern is my Quant score. It's a solid score, but not too high on percentile. Not sure how much micro OB programs are sticklers on this one? Also, I'm applying straight out of undergrad without a masters, I've heard this isn't too big of a deal as long as you are prepared but wanted more input on that. Any additional specific questions you may have: - I'm applying to a mix of top 10, top 20 and top 40 schools (based on TAMUGA rankings). Right now I've applied to 9. Should I apply to more? Is my application strong enough for a top 10 school?
  14. Hi! I am writing an application form for the econ Ph.D. program this year (2021 Fall) However, I have some problems with LoR. As everybody knows, I need 3 LoRs and I've already got permissions from 3 econ professors who know me well. However, one of 3 professors also gave permission to another student whose application lists are pretty much same with mine. about 80%? I think it matters a lot. Should I find another professor for 4th recommendation ? (as long as the university allows 4 LoRs) Thanks
  15. Hey all, I am currently a junior at a moderate level United States research school. I am studying math with a minor in economics, will have far more classes than required but am avoiding the business school pre-reqs of a double major. I am trying to start formulating a plan for how to boost my application to graduate school or pre grad school programs next fall. Here are my current school stats and relevant experience. GPA: 4.0 (80 credit hours) Relevant Courses: econometrics, intermediate micro/macro (planned), law and economics, natural resource economics. Calc 1-3, Intro diff eq, Linear Algebra, probability, stats (planned), advanced cal(planned). Relevant research experience: Working paper on terrorism that I will be a co-author on. Started undergraduate research on energy regulations in the US. From this and my classes, I already have rec letter writers. Relevant job experience: Currently interning in a think tank out of DC where I am working on terrorism, energy, and carbon tariffs. Programming: R, Stata, Python, SAS (somewhat) GRE: I plan to take the GRE next spring and additionally next summer, shooting for a 165 quant or higher. I am currently accepted into the math masters fast track, but we do not have an applied track, so I would prefer to drop this and focus on economics sooner, but do not know how that will hurt my applications? I am wanting to go to graduate school somewhere that has energy and environmental economics as a top option, with preferably some decent connections in the public policy, government sector. Any advice on schools I should be looking at or things to do to boost my application are greatly appreciated.
  16. Hi everyone, Because of Covid-19, GRE scores are not required to apply for Rice Economics PhD program during the 2020-2021 application cycle. Best, Hulya Eraslan DGS and Professor of Economics
  17. Hi everybody, Could you please give me your opinions about my profile? I'll try to keep it short but informative: Degrees Bsc in Humanities (major in Econ): SciencesPo Paris. 3 years. No GPA calculated, but something like 14/20. Main weaknesses: no maths, an exchange year at San Diego State University where I did averagely (3 of GPA, one Econ class where I got a B). Main strengths: performed quite well in my econ classes. MA in International Economic Policy: SciencesPo Paris, 2 years (+ a gap year). No GPA calculated but something like 14.5/20. Main weaknesses: no maths, one failed metrics class in first year. Main strengths performed well in other econ and metrics classes. MSc in Economics: BGSE (Pompeu Fabra), one year. 8.5+ / 10 of GPA. Main weakness: no math per say. GRE 166Q/161V/ incoming score for writing part Courses 7 Metrics classes in total. Failed one at Sciencespo, did 1 point above median in advanced metrics at BGSE, and performed top 10% or even 5% in the other 5. Introduction to Micro at Sciencespo (14/20 - between 35th and 50th percentile). Advanced Micro at BGSE (7.7/10 - around median) 7 Macro classes: 2 in undergrad at SciencesPo (one 35th-50th percentile, one 10th-35th). 1 in my exchange year at SDSU (got a B). Two in my SciencesPo master (one at the median during 1st year, one top 5% in 2nd year). One advanced macro at BGSE (around 40th percentile), one normal macro at BGSE (top 10-5 %). Other Topic courses such as labour economics, sovereign debt, and few others, in which I did top 5%. Research experience 6 months in a French bank as an economist trainee (forecasting, etc). 1 year at the OECD as a research trainee. Some econometric analysis, mainly qualitative research. Supervisor was a Phd. Currently 6 months (maybe more) at the research division of the ECB. Most research supervisors have US PhD, and publish a lot. My work is mainly econometrics and data management. A bit of writing as well. Letters One from a young but rising economist (US PhD, publishing a lot). Ready to write me a strong letter for unis below top 5. Did around top 5% in his class. One from a more established econometrician who also publishes a lot. Top 8% according to ideas.recep. top 5% as well. He knows me less than the first one, but ready to write a strong letter. Probably one letter from the ECB. Other possibilities: young but rising economist (PhD harvard, assistant prof. at SciencesPo, visiting top 10 US uni right now). Scored 4th in his class of 25 student. One visiting macro professor from BGSE, also teaching at NYU. Does not publish a lot but I finished top 5% I believe. Other useful informations Starting this year the second year of a BSc in Maths from a French Uni (Aix Marseille, remotely). Won't have results before application deadline, but for potential interviews I will, and for next year as well. 2nd prize of a Banque de France student essay contest. In particular, which range of programs do you think I should I target? Should I retake the GRE? Should I try to perform good in this Math BSc and apply next year as well? Any opinion would be helpful! Thanks a lot, Cheers :)
  18. Hi guys! I wanted to get feedback on whether I have a strong application for ESS. My application has been rejected in the 2nd round. But I am planning to apply again in the 4th round. 20. Hi everyone. I am applying to finance PhD this year, and I would appreciate if you could give any advice on my profile. Thank you so much in advance! Applying to: PhD in Finance Test Score (GMAT): V44 98%, Q50 85%, AWA 4.5 43%, Total 770 99% Undergraduate: Bachelor in Business Administration; GPA: 3.81/4.00 Graduate: MSc in Finance; GPA: 3.97/4.00 Math/Statistics: Analysis, Stochastic Process, Math for Economics, Econometrics.. Work Experience: 4 years in the financial industry. Research Experience: - Master thesis in finance, co-author with my advisor, published in a low ranked journal (tier 3). - Three working papers, co-author with advisor and a PhD student, submitted to finance journals. Teaching Experience: T.A. in an MBA Class (only one semester..) Questions or Concerns: - I have already submitted my application to top 50 schools, and I am wondering whether I should consider applying to schools outside of the top 50 as well. - I didn't take core math courses, such as Calculus and Linear Algebra, although I've taught myself those topics. Would it be an issue?
  21. The application asks if I am applying to other institutions, is it better to honestly answer a few or just leave this section blank? tho I think this is probably not gonna affect the admission result, but maybe it can affect funding status?
  22. Hello, I am new here in order to keep up to date on information pertaining to the economics Ph.D. application cycle this year. Do we think this will improve or hurt my level of anxiety?? Cheers!
  23. Hello, I'm in a tough situation with my FPGEC process. I applied and passed on my fifth attempt in 2011, but wasn't able to complete the TOEFL certification before the expiration period. I contacted NABP and re-applied in 2016, but wasn't able to pass. According to the Candidate Application Bulletin: "Candidates that do not pass the FPGEE upon the final allowed attempt will have their FPGEC application closedand will be ineligible for further testing." I think I'm in this situation. I made two unsuccessful appeals to re-open my application, but haven't had any luck. Has anyone else encountered this situation and gotten an opportunity to re-apply? I'm in a really tough spot and would really like another chance. Please let me know. Thanks, Abdoul
  24. Hi guys, I am an international applicant and wonder if anyone in here applying to UNC? I tried to email the business school to ask about my application status but never got a reply. Anyone emailed them too and got a reply? Thanks!
