  1. I followed gregmat's structure for both the argument and the issue essay. I feel confident about the argument essay, as greg himself mentions, it is easily do able based on the structure and I'm pretty much convinced with the way I wrote it too, but the Issue essay seems to be a little tougher and ambiguous. Would be great if any one of you could review and suggest any tips/improvements! TIA. Issue essay question: The best way for a society to prepare its young people for leadership in government, industry, or other fields is by instilling in them a sense of cooperation, not competition. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. Essay (written during a timed mock): A perfect leader is someone who not only has in depth knowledge about his team/organization/industry but also has the ability to get things done diligently. A leader is the one who is considered to be the best in the lot and hence the position, and to justify that, he has to possess a strong sense of cooperation, without giving up on the competition, in the right spirit. In my opinion, I think the statement's support towards cooperation is very much valid with respect to the scenario considered -- preparing young people for leadership. I'd like to support the same by calling forth two topics along with examples and hypothetical instances. The history has seen numerous leaders who have rose up to supreme authority by virtue of their competitive spirit, likewise, history has also witnessed these leaders falling apart in short time. What could possibly be the reason? Lack of cooperation? Yes -- if not the only reason, a major reason. Once someone rises to the top, the most important aspect would be to stay there and to be able to do that, that person has to be able to work 'with' his/her team and this directly translates to being cooperative at all times. I'd like to state an example to support the same. The Indian cricket team's best player of all times is Sachin Tendulkar, undoubtedly. And when he went up the ladder breaking through all the competition as the best cricket player of his time, people cheered his talent and competitive spirit. Soon, he was offered the captaincy of the Indian cricket team by the selectors and the coach without any second thoughts. But he failed miserably, as a player and as a leader. Why was that so? Many claim that he wasn't capable of working 'with' his teammates and always focused on being the best in the lot. He was a start individually, but lacked cooperation with his teammates. This example asserts that cooperation plays a formidable role in determining a leader's potential and success in any domain. Secondly, is competition bad for a young leader? Of course, young people need to have the competitive spirit in order to progress and accomplish their goals. But for people who aspire to be leaders, competition could be a bane. For instance, let's assume that a Manager has a fantastic team and always gets the work done on time. But slowly, the management comes to the realization that there is a start performer in his team who is getting most of the work done. In this case, if the manager holds a competitive spirit in the wrong sense, he might not like his teammate burgeoning. This leads to a lot of mix ups. Instead, if he is a person who has faith in cooperation, he would rather prefer walking up to his amazing teammate and have an open conversation about his success and learn and work together, and ultimately increasing his abilities and the team's standards. The statement strongly supports cooperation over competition, which might not hold water in all cases, but very well does in this case, where the focus is on the society trying to prepare its young people for leadership in various fields. In conclusion, I strongly support the claim that the statement makes and the above analysis provides the basis to my support.
  2. ISSUE Prompt – The best way to teach – whether as an educator, employer or parent – is to praise positive actions and ignore negative one’s. While some agree to the statement that the best way to teach is to praise only positive actions and ignore all the negative one's, I strongly disagree to this because this will not only paralyse the ability to distinguish between positive and negative actions but it will also make the learner an amateur in tackling the negative situations. While some might argue that by teaching only positive actions, learners will indulge only into positive actions .However this statement is faulty because they would not be able to distinguish between a positive and negative action as they would have been taught only about the positive actions and wouldn't know what a negative action is. For example, if an individual is not aware that taking drug could cause harm to his/her health, then drugs would appeal that individual because of its addictive nature. So praising the negative actions while teaching is equally important as it is to teach positive one's. This will make the learner aware about both sides of actions and will brush up their skills to quickly distinguish between the two. Don't you think that learners should know what is negative and why is it negative? An equally important question would be - Don't you think that learners should know that why a particular actions is stated as negative and why they should avoid involving into a negative action? The main agenda of teaching is to make the learner intellectually strong enough to broader his ability to not only distinguish between positive and negative or between good and bad but to make him able to understand the complexities of an action. A learner should be taught about why a particular action is negative and what will be the consequences of involving in such a negative actions. For example, a learner should be made aware of the punishments of crimes like cheating, murder or rape so as to teach him why he should avoid such actions and what could happen to him by getting involved in such crimes. Now think about a situation that you have accidentely hit someone with your car. What will you do in such situation? You'll either ran away or you'll take the victim to hospital and inform the police. Here you'll have two choices. One is good or a positive choice and other is bad or negative choice. But if you had not been taught about tackling negative situations, how would you make a wise decision? So, i have only chosen this example to state that the main agenda of teaching is to make a learner morally strong and make him/her able to make wise decision. A learner should also be taught about tackling a negative situation and you can only teach those by making them aware of negative situations only. So to conclude, I'd say that it is equally important to teach about the negative actions along with the positive actions to make the individuals aware of both and make them wise enough to tackle the negative situations and to teach them about why they should stay away from indulging in negative actions.
  3. Technology makes people's lives simpler rather than more complicated. There are always two sides of a coin, in a similar way technology advancement also have it's pros and cons. But, according to me it have helped more in simplyfying our lifes than making it complicated. For example, in earlier times just for delivering a simple message we had to write a letter and post it and it used to take weeks for it to get deliverd.Just imagine a situation which needs urgency. But, now a days contacting somebody is just a seconds away. This gives lot of security and confidance to people and also even though families are at distant locations they still can get in contact whenever they want. In the field of medical science now that we have so many advanced technologies such as advanced machines like artifical pacemakers, sophisticated blood dialysis equipments ,better ways to handle child birth , better drugs and cures and many more . This has increased the overall life expectancy of human beings. With the latest technology we are able to improve and simplify our education system.Earlier when everything was based on book learning, which was not necessarliy available to all the students but now with internet we are able to gather any kind of educational material. Also, the more the information is spread among people there will be more chances of improvement of the overall education system. But, this advancement has come with it's cost. The improvement of technology has made human beings very lazy.Even for the smallest things of day to day life people are relying completely on the technlogy, which in the long run can cause lot of physical problems to the entire society on whole. Moreover, technology has introduced lots and lots advanced war machines and missiles and weapons of destruction , which are capable to destroy the entire earth. In conclusion, we can say that technolgy has made human life simpler in all the aspects hence providing them with the ample amount of their time so that they can work in whichever field they like , rather than spending their time in trivial activites. It has made the entire world into a global village.Helped in bringing the people together.Though it has negative aspects as well like weapons responsible for mass destruction. But, as we say nothing is entirely black or white, but rather a shade of gray. But the lighter the shade is the better it is, And according to me technology has helped in improving and simplifying the life more than it has made it complicated.
  4. Governments should invest as much in the arts as they do in the military. Government should invest as much in arts as they do in military. Well, art and military are discordant fields, as one relates to the creativity and beauty and the latter relates to the safety and welfare of the country, so to determine whether government should invest as much in arts as they do in military would require a esoteric study of economic study which relates these two fields directly or indirectly. Although, art should never be neglected and should be promoted with a substantial budget because a country's art depicts the level of creativity and related culture in any country. Some common forms of art are Writing, Painting whereas some unique forms of art can be caricature, calligraphy and other connected to specific domains.Art should always be promoted with a budget, if not equal to, that is competitive with military. Investing money in art would result in many positive outcomes, one of the most important though, would be providing a better platform to upcoming creative artists and to those who want to showcase their work on a international domain.Government should manage artistic events like Art fairs and artists meet where artists from the multifarious domains visit and exchange their ideas withing themselves and public. This exchange of vision and idea will promote art and take that to a better altitude, thus resulting in a better ranking of country within other artistic countries. However, it is important to keep check on the money being thrifty, Investments which are prone to unlikelihood of positive results should be avoided, for example government should not invest additional funds on the art which is overpriced. Such overpriced arts seems great apparently, but they just stem the cash flow as much of the amount is already gone with it. Therefore, government should invest a substantial amount in art, not as much as they do in military. A good amount of investment should be planned which takes care of basic functions required to promote and depict art, along with which induces a motivation for artist to create something new and innovative. A recent study indicates that children living in the Himalayan mountain region in Nepal have lower levels of tooth decay than children living in suburban areas in the United States, despite the fact that people in the Himalayan mountain region in Nepal receive little to no professional dental care, while people in suburban areas in the United States see a dentist an average of 1.25 times per year. Thus, regular dental care is not helpful in preventing tooth decay. This study indicates that children living in the himalayan mountain region in Nepal have less tooth decay than to those living in sub-urban region in the United States. Well this holds true due to cultural difference and type of food intake in both the regions. One factor that could accounted for healthy teeth or lower tooth decay of children living in himalayan mountain region in Nepal could be the wooden stick, commonly known as "Datoon" they use to brush their teeth, which is derived from the plant found only in Himalayan mountain region. "Datoon" is the natural remedy used since ancient times as a brushing and teeth care herb. It is like a small wooden circular rod like semi ductile structure, which upon secretes juices healthy for teeth and gum upon chewing. Another important aspect is the difference in type of food consumption of both the regions. Children living in sub-urban areas of United states are more likely to encounter Junk foods and other soft drinks which in turn causes deleterious effects in teeth, whereas children living in Himalayan mountain region in Nepal mostly eat fresh food and fruits that are abundant in mountain region. Such kind of Himalayan meal helps them to weaken most kind of decay in teeth. Children who live in sub-urban areas of USA visit a dentist an average of 1.25 times per year, a session in which they get a admonishing advice for caring of teeth such as - Brushing them twice a day, using gargles after meals, flossing etc. But a study found that the children living in sub-urban areas have high level of negligence towards self care and rather they consider such advises as mere platitudes. On the other hand, children residing in mountain region are found to be much obedient and thus they are inclined more towards caring about themselves. So it is hard to figure out whether regular dental care is helpful in preventing tooth decay or not. Although regular dental care accounts for some portion of preventing tooth decay, but other factors such as food intake, health awareness and lifestyle also accounts for substantial role in increase or decrease of tooth decay overall.
  5. Hi All, I have written the issue topic for the first time. please post your valuable comments. Thanks in advance!!! your reviews would be of great support. TOPIC Some people believe that competition for high grades motivates students to excel in the classroom. Others believe that such competition seriously limits the quality of real learning. Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented. As stated by the above requirement, competition is very essential element for students to excel their academic and cultural skills. This can be motivated for ephemeral time period, to make them involved for extra-curricular activities which show casts their skills. The primary outcome of competition is to bring out one's inner potential and build to leadership qualities . Competition is healthy when it brings out positive results related to motivation, determination along with real learning quality. This gives them hands on experience and makes them to understand the difficulty existing in each and every task being involved. But, at times, it causes bitter outcomes, which makes some people go mad. Competition should exist only in students, not between parents. They shouldn't burden the kids with lots of homework and timetable ,which ultimately results in depression and stress. Students must be encouraged and enervated for their works. They should feel it interesting and positive feedback needs to be initialized from parents and their surroundings . They should be supervised under their mentor's guidance and continuous support brings them accolades and hudos. Time should be made very effective and students should be more focused on every activities. Each student posses his/her own skills and talent. Try to find out the potentials and give them moral support. They will come out with flying colors. Don't burden them at early age. Small minds is full of creativity and imagination. Being supported, the students reach the zenith. On the concluding note, people posses different opinions and views. Competition is necessary for both high grades as well as kids. This shouldn't make young minds burdened. Students are learning both real and academic skills as well.
  6. Hey, I am currently practicing for my GMAT and wrote this Issue Essay today: Topic: Analysis of an Issue Argument The following appeared in the editorial section of a WestCambria newspaper: “A recent review of the West Cambria volunteer ambulanceservice revealed a longer average response time to accidents than was reportedby a commercial ambulance squad located in East Cambria. In order to providebetter patient care for accident victims and to raise revenue for our town bycollecting service fees for ambulance use, we should disband our volunteerservice and hire a commercial ambulance service.” AWA- Online Essay The argument states that commercial ambulance services willprovide better care and raise revenue over West Cambria volunteerambulances. This does not include some important concern that must beaddressed to substantiate this argument. The statement does not addin to effect potential reasons for the difference in wait time for the twoambulances. This alone does not constitute a logical argument infavor of commercial ambulance services. Firstly, the accident victims may have a longer wait timefor volunteer ambulances because the volunteers may have a shortage ofvolunteers and ambulances available to them. Since volunteers are notpaid, and may lack funds for ambulances, this could cause the long waittime. The wait time has may have nothing to do with the amount of carethe volunteers provide for the victims. The volunteers may even provide bettercare than the commercial ambulance services. If there were more volunteers and West Cambria ambulancesavailable, the accident victims may not wait as long. Secondly, the collective service ambulances may be faster inresponse to victims because the goal may only be to raise revenue for the townby collecting service fees for ambulance use. This is a causality errorsince it may have nothing to do with the amount of care the victims get. Toimprove the justification that collective ambulance services should be used, aninterview process could be conducted on the victims in regards to which ambulanceservice provides the best care. Finally, the long wait time from West Cambria ambulancescould be a result in the circumstances, such as traffic, which would increasethe wait time. This long wait may have been a onetime scenario, however, to improvethe conclusion that collective ambulances are a better choice, there could astudy in the amount of times of wait time. Because the argument leaves out several key issues, it isnot persuasive to use collective service ambulances over volunteer ambulances. If it included the items discussed above instead of solely explaining the longwait time, the argument would have been more thorough and convincing. I am looking forward to reading your comments and feel free to send me your essays so that I can comment on them. Thank you very much in advance- Cheers Chantel
