Hello everybody, time is running out for everyone who wish to start phd in fall 2015. I have a question to be addressed. I'd appreciate replies from both seniors and applicants. First, what are the pros/cons of going for PhD in Econ Department rather than in business school (such as stern, wharton, hbs...)? I have been looking around for while and some b-schools have doctoral student whose research area are applied micro, game theory, ind organiz, development econ, public econ...(this is really confusing me)* which category is more worthy in terms of future salary? Probability to be admitted in SOM/b-sch compared to Econ dep? How ow to choose b2n the 2? *course requirement are very similar to phd from Econ dep

I have been reading this forum a lot recently and decided I would ask for some advice. I have been researching programs for a PhD in Organizational Behavior and had several questions: 1. What is the best resource for finding out about these programs and the research I could be involved in, short of asking faculty themselves? (i.e. contacting current PhD students, faculty profiles etc.) 2. Is there a consolidated list somewhere of PhD OB program rankings? I've found lists of business schools, but don't know if those rankings necessarily correlate with a good PhD OB program. It seems like they do, but I'm new to the game, so I could be wrong. 3. Do I realistically have a shot at acceptance into a top school? My profile is as follows: - Degree: B.A. in International Studies and Certificate in Conflict Resolution from small, somewhat unknown liberal arts college - GPA: 3.93/4.0 w/university honors (a separate commendation from summa cum laude. I don't know if this is a plus in then application process) - GRE: I haven't taken the official test yet, but my range in my practice tests is above 700 for both Q and V. My essay writing is strong, so I think that's not a problem. I plan to take the test in 6 months or so, so I will have ample time to study and make sure my scores are high. - Academic Experience: 1 presentation at a national convention. Not much quantitative research experience but I'm working with professors from my college to submit my senior thesis for publication, and be involved in research projects in the next 8 months to improve my research experience. I also worked as a writing tutor for 3 years so I have lots of academic writing experience. My major was also heavily saturated with reading/writing, so while I don't have much quantitative research experience, I have a lot of qualitative. I'm not sure how to distinguish this in the application or if it necessarily matters. - Relevant Classes: Took applied social statistics (A) and microeconomics (A) - International background: Lived in Asia for roughly 7 years, dual citizen until one country made me give one up, travel internationally at least once a year - 3 excellent LORs -Pros: High GPA, high GRE (projected), some research experience, and hopefully more if the collaboration I'm working on goes through. International experience (with respect to acceptance to INSEAD), LORs -Cons: Didn't go to a "big name" school, not much research experience compared to lots of other applications (especially if I can't workout the research stuff this year), no background in psychology other than basic 100 level classes, although this may not necessarily be a deterrent. Gap from BA to PhD (I graduated last spring). I do have valid reasons for past months, and I'm working on filling the remaining time in with relevant activities. I'm planning to apply to a couple of the big name schools: Stanford, INSEAD, Wharton, and then others as well of course. The schools I apply to do depend on what I can find about them, so any advice on how to attain that information would be much help (other than information on respective websites). My research interests in OB are cultural conflict in organizations, negotiations, and cultural effects on group dynamics. My top choice on the information I have on programs right now is INSEAD. My goal is to be able to teach/research in Europe for several years, and then move back to the US to do the same. Any advice/insights are greatly appreciated!
