My Target Scores

  1. Using the profile format I've seen in this site: PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top 20 by USNEWS, BS with Honor in Econ, BS in Maths Undergrad GPA: 3.95/4.0 Type of Grad: - Grad GPA: - GRE: 161V, 170Q, 4.5W Math Courses: Cal I (A+), Cal II (A+), Cal III (A+), Honors Differential Equation (A), Linear Algebra (A-), Real Analysis (A-), Numerical Method (A), Modern Algebra (A), Probability (A), Theoretical Stats (A), Maths of Finance (A) Econ Courses: Inter Micro (A), Inter Macro (A), Game Theory (A), Ph.D. Math Camp (A), Ph.D. Micro I, II, III (A-, A, A), Honor Thesis (A+) Other Courses: - Letters of Recommendation: 1 from my undergraduate professor, 1 from my Honor thesis advisor, 1 from my RA experience at Fed. Not sure how they've written, but I trust that they wrote nice things. Research Experience: 2 years of RA at Fed Teaching Experience: - Research Interests: - SOP: Wrote how my classes and experience as RA prepared me to excel in PhD, and wrote about my possible future research topics. Other: - RESULTS: Acceptances: Waitlists: Rejections: Stanford Pending: UCB, UCLA, Michigan, NYU, Cornell, Columbia, Yale, Chicago, Wisconsin, WashU, ASU, UPenn, Rochester Attending: Stanford just sent me a rejection letter (way earlier than I thought), and I'm starting to feel nervous. It's only 1 rejection out of 14 I've applied, but I fear that I may be rejected by all. Did I aim too high, and should I have applied to more safety schools?
  2. Type of UG: Bachelor in Economics [nationally reputed university, but it is in a third world county] GPA: 3.88/4.0 Math courses: Cal I/II [A,A], Linear Algebra [A], Stat I/II [A/A-], Mathematical Economics [A], Economics courses: Micro I/II [A/A} Macro I/II[A/A], Econometrics I/II [A-/A] other economic courses like Labor, Int trade, health, financial and so on. GRE: 167Q/157 V LOR: thesis supervisor [strong], econometrics & macro prof [strong], stat & cal prof [strong] Research Experience: UG thesis, RAed in a departmental research [did mostly legwork], after graduation have worked as field researcher [one was in World Bank's project] SOP: nothing special, background and future goal to end up in academia. First, I havent taken cal III or real analysis, these courses arent offered to undergrad economics at our uni. I have come to know that they are essential for top 30 Phd programs. Hence, I am thinking of getting MA first, preferably Canadians. Secondly, I am planning on to apply to UBC, U of Waterloo, Dalhousie, U of Winniepeg. There are other programs like U of T, Queens', McGill and Alberta that I am considering as well. I dont know if I am applying to right range of schools. So if anyone could help me deciding which ones to apply to if Im looking to going on to academia later on. Thank you!
  3. Undergraduate Econ degree from top 10 bad gpa 3.1 high iq - think 180 This is my plan bachelor in math ma in financial economics basically all the necessary prerequisites: grad level micro/macro/econometrics, multivariable cal, linear algebra 1-2, diff equat, ode, topology, prob stats(multi calculus) Who out there got into the ivy leagues?
  4. Hi all - I just found this site and it looks like a great place to get input on my application profile and the schools where I am planning on sending applications. I'm looking at AREC program due to my interest in natural resources economics, but I also have interest in experimental and behavioral economics and decision science. Here's my profile: Bachelors: B.A. in Economics and Biology from a top U.S. liberal arts college. 3.70 GPA, cum laude. Received an award for a top essay in economics. Masters: M.S. in Resource Conservation from University of Montana. My masters thesis was a discrete choice experiment questionnaire I used to estimate non-market damages of invasive plants. 4.0 GPA. GRE: Q 770, V 680, A 4.0 Math and statistics courses: Multivariate calculus (A-, at college level--previous calc was in high school), Statistics (A), Econometrics (A), Econometrics (A, at graduate level). Econ courses (undergrad): Intro Micro (A), Intro Macro (A-), Intermediate Micro (B+), Intermediate Macro (A), Econometrics (A), Environmental Economics (A), Poverty & Public Policy (A-), Tax Policy (A), Public Economics Seminar (A) Econ courses (grad): Econometrics (A), Economics of climate change (A), Advanced Micro (A) Letters of recommendation: Graduate advisor from University of Montana (Asst. Prof, PhD University of Queensland), current supervisor at my job (US Forest Service Research Forester, PhD in Economics from Oregon State University), and either a current colleague (US Forest Service Research Economics, PhD in Economics from University of New Mexico) or my econometrics professor from University of Montana (PhD in Economics from University of Oregon). Other notes: Since completing my Masters, I've been contracting as a research economist with the US Forest Service. I have one article in review (though not in an economics journal), and another (which I will be first author on) close to being ready for submission to an applied economics journal. Also, I taught an undergraduate Forest Economics course last spring at The University of Montana as an adjunct instructor, and this fall I'm co-teaching another course. Schools: Cal-Berkeley (AREC), UC-Davis (AREC), Wisconsin (AREC), Oregon St. (Applied) Others considering: Texas A&M (AREC), Arizona, UCSB Strengths: Strong research experience, teaching experience, and experience in economics. I have a start developing a publication record. Weaknesses: I'm a bit too awesome. But seriously…Math. No linear algebra or math beyond calc. Hopefully my GRE quantitative scores help me out a bit here, but I know this will be seen as a weakness on my application. Questions and Requests: 1) I would really appreciate any general input on my profile and the schools I'm applying to. 2) How many schools should I think about applying to? I see some people on this board who have really long lists of schools. Is this because they just want to go to the best school that let's them in, or is this because it's THAT hard to tell where you'll be admitted? It seems like applying can cost $100 per school, so I'd like to apply to 6 or fewer schools, unless people here strongly feel that would be a mistake. 3) What are people's opinions on contacting professors prior to applying? I've read that this can actually hurt you by making it seem that you don't understand the process, but some posts here have mentioned this can okay in some situations. Thanks a lot for the help
  5. University of California (UC) picks the pockets of Californians, foreign, out-of-state students clean. UC shouldn’t come to the Governor orpublic for support. (The author has 35 years’ consulting experience, has taughtat UC Berkeley (Cal)where he observed the culture & way senior management work) University of California Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau ($500,000 salary)has forgotten that he is a public servant, steward of the public money, notoverseer of his own fiefdom. These are not isolated examples: recruits (usesCalifornia tax $) out of state $50,600 tuition students that displace qualifiedCalifornians from Cal. public university education; spends $7,000,000 + forconsultants to do his & many vice chancellors jobs (prominent East Coast university accomplishing same 0 cost); paysex Michigan governor $300,000 for lectures; in procuring a $3,000,000 consulting firm he failed to receiveproposals from other firms; Latino enrollment drops while out of statejumps 2010 (M Krupnick Contra Costa Times); ranked # 70 USA best universitiesForbes; tuition to Return on Investment drops below top 10; QS academic rankingfalls below top 10; only 50 attend Birgeneau all employees meeting; visits down20%; absence Cal. senior management control NCAA places basketball program onprobation. It’s all shameful. There is no justification for violations bya steward of the public trust. Absolutely none. Birgeneau’s irregularities continue. Governor Brown, UCBoard of Regents Chair Lansing must do a better job of vigorously enforcing stringentoversight than has been done in the past over Chancellor Birgeneau who uses thecampus as his fiefdom.
