  1. Hello! How would you rank the quality of the following California econ PhD programs: UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, University of Southern California, UC Los Angeles, and UC San Diego? Please explain briefly. Also, how dangerous, politically liberal, and/or expensive is living near UC Davis, USC, UCSD and UCLA? Thank you!
  2. Hi, I have come across loads of threads regarding pharmacists moving to the US and undertaking what can only be called a courageous journey to convert their hard earned qualification! I have started this thread just to locate those who are still undertaking this journey and wish to connect. NABP is currently reviewing my documents so I am still awaiting a certificate to start an internship which in itself has been difficult to locate. I'm happy to go through this journey with you online if you are based far away and if you're local to me, I have the option to meet up- anything from revision sessions to coffee meetups the well needed mental breaks. I am based in San Diego. If you're interested, please drop me a private message. If you have anything to say to us as a whole, you are welcome to comment on this thread! Thank you. Shivani

The ranking is good for later applicants who want to increase the chance of admission by sending applications from group A to B. The competitiveness is equally measured by GMAT, GPA, undergrad university. 70% The rigor of curriculum is measured by level of Quantitative(Econ, Math) and Psychology, Sociology. 30% I tried to take into account the strength of 3 track in Marketing: Strategy, Modelling, and Consumer Behavior which varies by schools. Therefore, Between the neighbor group like A+, A or A- etc, there are overlapping elements like Toronto may be in A+ for Quant and Strategy, but can be A for consumer. The same for Duke, CMU, Michigan... Some programs are very picky and admit only one student per year. Grouping is not 100% correctly, some overlapping schools between groups exists. My Ranking criteria are based on the difficulty on admission ( competitiveness) and the rigor of curriculum. Quant only is the program that does not have Consumer Behavior track. If the schools are in the same group, they are nearly equal in term of reputation, admission rate, rigor of curriculum, and placement. The schools in the A+ group are more likely to hire the students from other schools within group, sometimes hire from group A, hardly or never from group A- or B and so on. Group A hires from A+, within A, sometime A- , hardly B+( depend on student ability and advisor reputation) If the programs are within the same group, it very hard to say which one is better than other. The choices of school within group are often based on research interest, adviser reputation. Thus, the variance within group is small, but variance between groups is higher. In group A+ and A: Degree Requirement for Quant-Track: Series of graduate Micreconomics and Econometrics in ECON dept, Marketing Seminars, 3-6 courses in Statistics Dept. Therefore, the schools tend to admit the students who have strong quantitative background similar to students in ECON Dept in the same school. The qualifying exam is very rigorous. Degree Requirement for CB-Track: Series of Psychology courses or Sociology, Marketing Seminars, 3-6 courses in Statistics Dept. In group A- and below: Degree Requirement is less rigorous: Marketing seminars, ECON and Statistics are elective. Some exceptional programs such as Houston, Texas Dallas, Georgia State, Temple, South Carolina are on the up trend of research activities, they have many influential professors in Marketing field. Therefore, some years, we can see the placement on A school, but again it depends much on student performance in the program and adviser reputation. If you have many offers, you can use following criteria to make a wise decision: 1.Look at the curriculum of each program. 2.Know the content of course work, and who will teach the class. 3.Who will be the mentor for your research, the most important thing. 4. Know the research activity of professors in the program. 5. Location 6. Stipend 7. Marketing research Center and research facillity 8. Opinion from current students. 9. Placement records 10. Your plan after graduation: teaching or research schools, or balanced ones 11. Assistantship duties: too many teaching duties may affect academic performance Please feel free to remind me programs that are not in the ranking, so that I can add up, OR you can consider the universities in the list Phd Programs in Marketing To be continued...
  4. This group for all people who are preparing for CPJE for california. Please post the best study materials for the exam and links to it so every one would benefit. Thanks.
  5. Hi, I am just finishing my internship in an independent pharmacy in Long Beach, California. The pharmacist is willing to consider taking another intern. It is a nice and quiet setting with an opportunity to learn a lot. We do compounding and work with medical equipment as well. It is a volunteer position for 1500 hours. If somebody is interested, please text me.
  6. Hi, Has anyone recently submitted an application for exam/license in California? I get really confused if the board asks hospital intern hours from foreign graduates, or we can go only with outpatient pharmacy experience? I wrote to the board and they replied they want 600 hours inpatient experience, which really shocked me, as finding a hospital internship is really hard. I would greatly appreciate your answers and help!
  7. Hi All, I have received following admissions for Fall 2014: 1. University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) for MS/PhD in ECE department. No financial aid. I mailed the graduate department and got to know that I will be supposed to find fellowships and advisor in my first semester. Further, depending on circumstances, I can always change my admission from PhD to MS and vice versa. 2. Texas A&M University (TAMU) for MS. No financial aid. Can change to PhD depending on financial aid and advisor. My area of interest is (1) microelectronics and computer architecture and (2) Nano-electronics and fabrication. I am international student, so fee structure would be 47000$ per year for UCSB and 34000$ per year for TAMU. Please suggest me which university should I consider for above field of interest considering financial situation, job opportunities and research potential given considerable "extra" amount that I will have to pay for UCSB. Waiting for your responses... any suggestions and replies would be really helpful. Thank You Additional Info: I have also been admitted from MichiganTech for PhD in same area without funding.

  9. Hi Guys, I graduated from UC San Diego (Public UC school in California) with B.S. in Management Science (it's like applied economics) in June 2011. My overall GPA is 3.198 and my upper division major GPA is 3.06. I have not really thought of going to grad school when I was in my undergrad, so I did not think too much about my GPA. Currently, I work at a Fortune 100 as an order specialist, but thinking of going to graduate schools and continue to study in my field. I have not really prepared anything for grad school (GRE, letters of rec), but once I have more clear idea of what I will be doing in 2-3 years from now, I will start accordingly. I have been looking at masters programs in CA (UC schools), but they all require min GPA of 3.25 or 3.5 What are some schools that I have a decent shot at? I was looking at non-CA schools, but couldn't tell much about their program since I am not too familiar with other states' program. I was also thinking about getting masters in Europe and come back to US for PhD and job since Europe is cheaper. But I am afraid that people here might not be too familiar with lesser known European schools and that might hurt my PhD and job outlooks down the line. Could you guys please give me some suggestions? Now that I graduated, my school won't help and I found out that UC San Diego's alumni network is rather weak... Thanks guys!
  10. Dear all, As a PhD student in the humanities, I must warn you not to come to a University of California campus, ESPECIALLY UC-Irvine. Our French Department has been on Suspension, so there is no more point in studying Comparative Literature here. The Department is still trying to recruit students, but DON'T BELIEVE THEIR LIES!! There's no more funding here and your experience will be atrocious, mark my words. Do ANYTHING but go to a University of California campus!! This state cannot recover from its economic crisis, unfortunately. :( -Blop
