  1. Anyone else at Cambridge? I came across this recently, warning,18+: The Persian Lovers: Bardia at Cambridge ⋆ The Zoeverse
  2. I'd like to know your thoughts on how these programs rank in terms of international reputation as well as PhD preparation. Yes, I've done some prior research on this topic, but most answers were from more than 4 years back. If you, or someone you know, attended one of these programs, I'd love to know your experience. Personally, I'm a micro-guy, so I'm leaning towards UCL, but how much do the names of LSE/Cam stack against UCLs favour?
  3. I’ve been wondering, if someone happens to get an RA position at J-PAL, who is the best person possible that will be able to write a good letter? I’m thinking that because the research is conducted away from Cambridge that despite working with J-PAL I wouldn’t be able to get a letter from any top faculty. Is this about right?
  4. Hello. Been a long time lurker, but this is my first time posting. I would love to hear from those who have similar experiences. I have got offers from: - Cambridge- MPhil Economic Research (1 year, PhD track) - McGill University- PhD Economics - Mannheim University- PhD Economics - Stockholm School of Economics- PhD Economics I've secured full funding (and stipend) for all but Cambridge. Yet to hear back about funding from Cambridge. Reason for applying to the Master's program at Cambridge is to further strengthen my mathematical background and research skills, for continuation to a PhD. Additionally, I want to keep the path to US PhD open. My research interest lies in Macroeconomics (International Macroeconomics). With the finances being covered in the direct PhD program, the offers seem attractive. However, given other factors to consider- department strength and reputation, placement statistics, employment opportunities (for international students), student experience, among others, leaves me very confused. Any help and comments would be appreciated. Thank you very much in advance!
  5. I'm graduating from UC Davis with a 3.4 GPA, majoring in economics and international relations. My upper division GPA and the GPA for my last two years are around 3.6. I had mild depression in my first two years after my grandfather passed away, which explains my GPA, sort of. I have three solid recommendations from 3 full economics professors, one for whom I have been a research assistant. My GRE is 160V/160Q (planning to re-take but not hopeful). What would be the chance for me to be accepted for Oxford MPhil Economics or Cambridge MPhil Economics? Their entry requirements are 3.7 and 3.6 respectively. If it's virtually impossible for me to be accepted, I don't think I will apply. But I've been told by admissions officers from both Oxford and Cambridge that other aspects of my application will be considered. I get the feeling that Oxbridge takes the GPA extremely seriously. I was rejected by Oxford's PPE because I didn't meet the A-level conditional offer. Please be frank thanks. Should I or should I not apply?
  6. Hi folks! I am planning on applying in the coming year for Econ PhD positions in the top UK universities (Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, Warwick) and I have a GRE from 3 years ago, with a score of: 168 Quantitative, 164 Verbal, 4.0 Writing I believe it is a good score (I am a non-native English speaker, if that makes any difference for admissions), but I am unsure whether it is enough or I should retake it (at the risk of not improving my score). I am mainly concerned about my writing score, but I have read in a few places that only the quantitative score is really taken into account. To what extent is this true? Any advice in my case? Tweet-sized background: BA Engineering from good home-country Uni, MSc Statistics with great distintiction from top 50, starting MSc Economics at UCL next; some experience with RA and TA.
  7. My end goal is to complete a PhD in a top 10 school in the US. I've just finished my undergrad at a UK top 3 school in economics and management with first class honours and have offers from LSE EME and almost full funding for the Cambridge MPhil. I'm considering whether to do the EME, as there seems to be general consensus that it is great for PhD admissions, or the Cambridge MPhil first, and then the EME after that. The reason for the latter choice is that I'm not 100% sure my maths is strong enough to score well on the EME, and therefore have good enough results to apply for PhDs. If I do the Cambridge MPhil first, I will have plenty more time to prepare for the difficulty of the EME. Has anyone heard of people doing two masters like this? Would I just be wasting a year by doing 2 similar programs? Would I be better off using one of those years to do full-time research in prep for my PhD applications? Thanks!
  8. Hello guys, I am a UK MSc student and am currently considering these two places to do my PhD. Obviously, I know that generally speaking LSE > Cambridge. Nonetheless, Cambridge has some really good researchers for Econometrics (my area of interest) and also has the benefit of being a 3 year programme while LSE's programme is 5 years. How would you compare these departments?
  9. I am currently a student of the two year MSc programme at Warwick (Diploma plus MSc). My objective is to get into a PhD programme ASAP. Since my undergrad was in business and finance I don’t have high expectations in applying to a top5 department in the US; even though my GRE score is very good (170 quant) and my GPA was 3.8. In Warwick’s diploma (first year of the masters) my final mark was 81 (“impressive” first class honours). I honestly believe that with this mark, and given my undergraduate GPA and GRE score, and can get into any MSc (or Mphil) in the UK starting 2016. My question is, given that I want to apply for a PhD, is it worth for me to “loose” one year and apply to LSE/Cambridge for the masters or I should stay at Warwick and apply now (to enter in the PhD in 2016)? Obs: I don’t mind doing my PhD in the UK as long as it is at LSE or Oxbrigde (since I am european). tks a lot :verydrunk:
  10. Hello everyone, I am new user but I have found this forum quite useful for all applicants. I am facing a dilemma regarding my business school endeavors. I have two offers at hand: a professional MPhil at Cambridge Judge Business School without funding and a PhD at one of the better known French Schools (ESSEC/EMLYON/EDHEC). I know the career choices would be different in both cases, however I am trying to gauge which school offers a better placement prospects for employment of international students in the countries they are based. Is the Cambridge brand really stronger than the French schools in Europe? Even though I won’t have to take a loan to attend Cambridge it would still be a very expensive investment (cost a total of GBP 36000). Further, is it possible to join industrial research/consulting after a PhD in Business in Europe (I know it is difficult in the USA)? Any opinion, experience or suggestion would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  11. Hi, I have got several offers from those so-called "stepping stones" masters, including Cambridge MPhil Economic Research, Duke M.A. Econ (40% tuition waiver), LSE Msc Econ, TSE M1(Full Funding), UBC M.A. Econ, U Chicago Harris MACRM CUHK MPhil Econ (Full Funding) Due to some personal reasons, I would consider Cambridge MPhil and Duke M.A. only. My goal is the top 20 Economics PhD program in the US or Oxbridge or LSE in the UK, so Cam and Duke: Which one might be better? Any comments are welcomed! ----------------------------------------------------- Some updates about my profile: PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: I am currently a fourth-yr student in China, my university is also called "China's LSE", which is famous for its social sciences. Undergrad GPA: Overall GPA: 3.80/4.00 (5%); GPA in the third year: 3.98/4.00 (1%) GRE: 170(Q)+154(V) Math Courses: Not so many, but nearly straight A, Calculus I, II, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, Statistics, Metrics Letters of Recommendation: All from my undergradute institution Research Experience: 4 research assistantships (2 in Behavioral and Experimental Economics; 2 in Development Economics) Teaching Experience: Principles of Micro, Macro; Experimental Econmics Research Interests: Applied Micro, esp Behavioral and Experimental Economics; Development and Growth
  12. Hello there, I have been accepted by the two aforementioned unis. I know that in terms of prestige perhaps Cambridge is the better of the two, however I feel that my interests (behavioral, experimental, development) are more closely linked to USC. Plus USC in LA! I guess my question is: Will attending USC close doors in the future compared to cambridge?
  13. I would be starting with college in a short while. I am more interested in the entrepreneurial side of business ( but I would like to have knowledge of the technical side ) and after doing a lot of research I chose philosophy honours with a minor in math( actually it's different than a minor as it is intensive itself and can enable me to pursue a math masters.) UG course Structure 20 papers in philosophy 6 papers in math( calculus, linear algebra, Differential Equations and Mathematical Modelling,Numerical Methods, Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra) 2 papers in economics ( game theory, financial economics) 2 papers in Stats ( stats in finance, actuarial stats) I chose philosophy partly out of genuine love for some of it's themes but my main reason for choosing it was that the skills that it provides are invaluable in the business world. Anyways after my graduation I plan on enrolling in programmes like Cambridge's 1 year diploma for non-eco graduates which compresses a 3 yr degree into 1 tear and can also be used to pursue a masters in economics. I would like to know your opinions about the viablity of my plan in the long run and the challenges that i would have to face. Thanks a lot.
  14. If you had to choose between Oxford MPhil and Cambridge MPhil, which one would you choose? Also, please share your opinions regarding PhD placement and employment after graduation from any of these two programs. And, lastly, any other opinions about these programs are most welcome.
  15. Hey! I have lurked on forums for a while now and have got the impression that Cambridge is not really renowned for the strength of its economics department for placement to top US Phds. I am a non US, EU national and have jst been admitted to the diploma in Economics and plan to do the M. Phil as well. I do not plan to study upto Phd so is anyone aware of the department's reputation with the private sector for employment? I am interested in fields of Economic policy and have an admit from LSE for MPA in Social and Economic policy as well. Would that be a better option? thanks a lot in advance!
  16. Hello everyone, I'm currently studying for a BA in History at Oxford, having got a 1.1 in my first year exams and predicted the same for finals. I've been thinking about the 2 year economics diploma and then masters, but my concern is that there is almost no quantative element to my degree and that I won't get a place on a very good course. I know that SOAS take students with no degree level maths, but I've also heard that their teaching isn't amazing. Ideally I'd be thinking about somewhere like Cambridge or LSE. I have A Level Maths and Physics at Grade A, but I'm not sure if this is enough. I have thought about doing the LSE summer school in preparation but its very expensive. Are there any humanities or social sciences students who have been successful in their applications for economics diplomas - at any institution - and how are they finding their courses?
