  1. I'm curious about how I stand. Looking to get into either U of T (doctoral, preferably) for MA or LSE (MSc in Econ or EME) Type of Undergrad: Top 5 Canadian school, Business (Finance) and Mathematics dual degree Undergrad GPA: 3.9/4.0 GRE: Q: 170, V: 164, W: 4.5 Math Courses: Calc I, II (AP, no mark); Calc III (A+); Linear Algebra (A+); Intro to Computer Science (A+); Universally standardized intro stats course (A+); Probability Theory (with Calc III prerequisite) (A-); Game Theory (A+); Real Analysis (A-); Differential Equations (A+); Computational Data Science (A); Probability Theory II (with Real Analysis prerequisite) (A); Time Series Analysis (A) Econ Courses: Intro, Intermediate, Advanced Micro and Macro (A+ in all six); Mathematical Economics (A+); Econometrics I (A+); Applied Econometrics (A) Finance Courses: Finance I, Finance II, Corporate Finance, International Finance, Portfolio Theory, Financial Derivatives (all A+) Letters of Recommendation: One economics professor, one quantitative finance professor. Research Experience: Very little academic research experience; all of my research experience is professional. Research Interests: Macroeconomics, developmental economics Work experience: Worked every summer at various firms, most recently at a prestigious investment bank. I guess this is sort of relevant and it would certainly be in my SOP; I want to do a Master's degree, more than anything else, because I love economics. I can continue at the firm I last worked, and it would be a solid end in itself - from what I've seen, many people who finish MAs in economics end up in the very job I would end up in. But for some naive misguided reason I feel the need to complete graduate studies in economics. Maybe part of me feels I can make a difference in the world with it. I don't know.
  2. Hi everyone- I've been lurking for a while, but I'd like to ask for some help on starting my graduate schools search process with the goal of applying in the Fall or Winter of this year. I just graduated from my BSc Hons and I'm taking a year to work and apply for graduate programs for the Fall 2018 term. So far I'm primarily interested in Canadian MA programs (UofT, UBC, Queens, McGill) but I'd like some feedback on my profile to determine whether it's worth it to apply to any top international programs like LSE, UCL, Boston University or Duke. My long term goals are to work in the public sector in Canada, an international organization or in a think tank. If I can accomplish this with only an MA then I'd be open to it, but I'd also like to keep the door open to pursue a PhD if need be. If anyone has any tips on applications, or any suggestions on programs that I ought to look into, that would be much appreciated. Here's my details: PROFILE Type of Undergrad: Mid-level Canadian research university, with a reasonably strong MA and PhD programs. Undergrad GPA: 4.06/4.3 *Note: the Canadian GPA system is essentially the same as the US, with an A grade receiving a 4.0, but an A+ grade (above 90) receives a 4.3. GRE: Still have to write. Reasonably sure I can do well- my fundamental math skills are very good and my analytical writing is superb thanks to beginning my undergrad as a philosophy major. Math Courses (Undergrad Level): Calc I-II (A+,A), Statistics I-II (A,A), Linear Algebra (A-), Multivariate Calc for Economics(A+). Econ Courses (Undergrad Level): Standard Intro and Intermediate Micro/Macro with A/A+ in all. Labour (A+), Public Finance (A+), Poverty and Inequality (A), Advanced Micro and Macro (A+ in both). Econometrics I-II (A+, A). Bunch of other economics electives with A- to A+ in all (except for a B+ in international finance!!!). Econ Courses (Grad Level): Took a masters level Health economics course with a well-published prof and received an A+ Other Courses Taken: 7 philosophy courses with A+ to A- grades. A few Poli Sci with A/A-. LOR: I have commitments for 3 letters. Strong commitment from a very well known prof in my field of interest- Yale grad, visiting prof at Oxford, published 100+ articles and over a dozen books. Another from a reasonably well-known prof who taught me the graduate health course (UBC grad). 3rd is basically unknown but was my honours advisor and knows me very well. Research Experience: Econometrics term paper, won award for best econometrics paper. Honours thesis (also won award for the best honours thesis). Currently working as a research assistant in the Canadian government. Teaching Experience: Private tutor for 1 year. Research Interests: Poverty and Inequality, Public Finance, Population Health, Labour Concerns: I realize after reading this forum that many top students take many more math courses than I did. I do very well in math, but I elected to pursue a philosophy minor instead. While I do not regret it, since I feel that it's benefited me personally and intellectually, I wish I had taken Analysis. I will almost definitely graduate top 5 in my class, but I feel like that would mean more if I had gotten an A grade in an advanced mathematics course. Hopefully doing well on the GRE will signal that I have math ability.
  3. Last semester I finished all my requirements to become eligible for graduation with a BAH in Economics from a Tier-1 Canadian university with a respectable econ department. I've recently come to the conclusion that I would like to apply for a MA Economics or MBA within the next 3 - 5 years. However I'm not entirely sure how realistic my prospects may be for either program considering my academic standing: Cumulative GPA is a B, with the past four semesters at a B+. 300 Level ECON: Micro (B-), Macro (B+), Econometrics (A) 400 Level ECON: Topics in Micro (C+), Topics in Macro (C+), Industrial Organization (A-), Public Economics (A-), Seminar on Urban Economics (A+) No solid rapport with professors for academic reference. No linear algebra or differential/integral calculus marks. Have not taken a GRE or GMAT. So my question is this: Should I go back for a remedial semester if I want to get an (A) MA or a (B) MBA? If I do go back, should I enroll in the 400 Micro, 400 Macro, 300 Micro, 300 Macro, 100 Linear Algebra, or 100 Calculus (Max 4 of the 6 options). Thanks!
  4. Hey guys, I'm thinking of completing a masters degree in economics at one of the big 4 Canadian schools (U of T, UBC, Queens, UWO). I'm entering my 3rd year now and I have the following grades for some core courses: multivariable cal (A+), linear algebra (A+), real analysis I (B+), intro to probability (A+), honors intermediate micro I/II (A, B+), honors intermediate macro I (A+), money and banking (A+), monetary theory (A). Will take econometrics next year. My concern is my B+ in intermediate micro II, which was pretty much the bottom of my class. How much of a problem will that particular grade be when it comes to MA admissions? Thanks a lot guys.
