My Target Scores

  1. Hi All! Just wondering if anyone have heard back from programs in OB in Canada? I have heard back from a few but still waiting on more! Any insight would be appreciated!
  2. Hi. Are you aware of any PhD program in Business Administration/Management in Canada that is still accepting new applications? I've applied to 6 programs last December, and it looks like I didn't get in any :upset: I really can't wait for a whole year! Good options in the US would also be appreciated :loveheart:
  3. Hi. It's my first post here :) I have applied to 6 Phd programs in business administration/Management in Canada, as follows: 1- Rotman - University of Toronto (Organization behaviour) 2- Sauder - University of British Columbia (Organization behaviour) 3- Schulich - York University (Organisational studies) 4- Ivey - University of Western Ontario (Entrepreneurship) 5- Haskayne - University of Calgary (Entrepreneurship) 6- Beedie - Simon Fraser University (Entrepreneurship/Organisational studies) I'v had an interview with POI in both Calgary & Simon Fraser, but that was it. Never heard back from these 2, neither was I shortlisted to interviews by the first 4 I'm wondering if anyone applied to these and heard back, I'm new to this website and I've used the search function, but searching for 'Beedie', for example, resulted in posts that goes back to 2013! so I wonder if there is anything I'm doing wrong. I also wonder when approximately do these universities send decision (Either acceptance or rejection). Also, out of curiosity, which of those has the highest acceptance rate for international students with degrees from outside Canada/US? Much appreciation!
  4. Are there any pre-doctoral RA programs in econ/business in Canada?
  5. Are there any pre-doctoral RA programs like Stanford GSB Research fellows in Canada.
  6. Hello, I have 2 offers from University of Alberta and Texas A&M University and both universities are my top choices. However, in choosing one of these universities I have a couple of reservations in my mind and I will be very glad if you could provide some insights. 1. Considering the Job Market after completing the PhD, does the ranking of the institution where you get your PhD from matters? If yes, in what degree? 2. Again considering the Job Market, PhD in Canada vs. PhD in US? In other words, do the universities in the US have a tendency to hire applicants having PhD’s from American institutions? 3. How do you consider Univ. of Alberta in terms of its prestige in the US vs. Texas A&M? Although it’s in top 5 universities in Canada, how it is known in the US? 4. Am I even asking the right questions? I am aware of the fact that almost all will depend on how I will improve myself, what I will do in my PhD studies, dissertation, publications etc. rather than the “prestige” of the institution. However, assuming I will have a similar portfolio when I will complete my PhD, I am trying to understand the differences of these schools. Thank you!
  7. Hey all, I am an Architect from India. I completed my bachelor's degree in Architecture ( B.Arch ) in 2017 which is a 5-year degree. I have many backlogs and one year drop. My final grades are 7.8 CGPA ( i.e 7.4 x 7.8 + 12 = 70% ) equivalent to 3.7/4 Canadian GPA according to this calculator > Fall Admissions: How To Convert Your CGPA For USA, Germany & Canada | GREedge Blog ( scroll down two pages for Canada Gpa calculator on the page ) I have 7.5 overall scores in IELTS academic. I have 2.5 years of work experience. Is my profile eligible for pursuing masters in Canada? The degree I want to pursue is 1.Masters of Urban Design 2. Masters of Planning 3. Masters of Architecture Please do not suggest diploma courses. These are the final courses I want to look into. I was talking to an agent earlier who said my profile is low and he suggested considering Australia. However, I am not quite sure whether my profile is a low one as the yeard drop was due to a significant health issue I faced in the 2nd year. I have all my documents ready including ( Portfolio, writing samples, CV, transcripts, LOR ) With the deadline being 15th Jan 2019 for most of the Canadian Universities, I am in a panic mode and don't know what to do really. I also want to be eligible for PR later. Any suggestions, please? Thanks in Advance.
  8. I want to do a PhD in development economics and I have been looking into PhD programs in Canada. However I feel like the requirements are very spread out. Universities like Toronto have a minimum GPA requirement but the people that get in have way higher GPAs than that, and others like McGuill, have lower requirements. What I'm trying to ask is if anyone here has experience with these programs, should I avoid some simply because they might be extremely hard to get in? Just because I do not have the money to spend on many applications and my grades or GRE scores are not that great either.
  9. I'm interested in development economics and I have been looking into PhD programs in Canada. Just because I do not have the money to spend on many applications and my grades and GRE scores are not as competitive.
  10. My profile: Country: India Master's in Economics Degree from a Top 5 University. First ranker. (12 years ago) Research experience - 2 years in total : 1 year with a economic policy think-tank with and 1 year with a IIM, Ahmedabad professor - but both are 10 years ago More recent Work-experience: 8 years in data analytics industry GRE: Yet to take, but took once 12 years ago with a 1420 (710 in Quant and Verbal both) Recommendations: 1 from the IIM professor, 1 from my Master's thesis guide and 1 more from my Master's prog prof. All are fairly well known in India, but I'm unsure of how good a recco I'd get given the time that has lapsed since i worked with them. I am looking to immigrate to Canada with my family, and the PR (permanent residency, equivalence of a domestic student basically) application is already in pipeline. I am hoping to hear back positively by Nov/Dec 2018 latest on this. Hence, I'm looking only at Canadian schools for my studies. My questions are as follows: 1. What are my chances to get into UBC and U of Toronto? 2. Do you know if univs give a preference to international candidates or domestic (which is what a PR should help me get)? I'm keen on UBC, but not sure how strong my profile is and if I should first wait to get the PR in hand before i apply. If any of you have insights on this point, it would be quite helpful. 3. When is the latest I should take the GRE to meet the deadlines for applying for Fall 2019 admissions? 4. Does age play on negatively in a PhD application? Thank you all for reading through and guiding!
  11. Hey everyone, You hear a lot about the big four Canadian Econ depts (UBC, UoT, Queens, Western) but not a lot about those depts that are immediately outside of the big four. So it’d be great if we can share the strengths (and weaknesses) of these supposedly second tier unis. Also, what Canadian Econ depts have strengths in behavioral economics? And are there renowned faculty who specialize in behavioral economics in Canada? Thanks and hope this helps many others!
  12. Type of Undergrad: BA in Economics from a south asian university which is top ranked in my country CGPA: 3.7/4, GRE: Q162 (770), V 151 (460), AW 4 TOEFL: iBT100 Coureses: Mathematics for Economists I & II (A+ & A), Differential and Difference Equations (A+), Real Analysis (A+) Statistical Methods I & II (A+ & A), 4 Econometrics course (A-, A+, A+, A+), Microeconomics (Principles A, intermediate B+ & A-, advanced A+ & A+), Macroeconomics (Principles A+, intermediate A+& A+, advanced A & A) Letters of Recommendation: From advanced level Microeconomics, Real Analysis and Economerics courses. All three have recognized US PhD but are not famous economists. They are likely to write good letters for me. My future goal is to get a PhD from the Big Four. For now, I am looking for a funded MA program in Canada. [*=1]Given my profile, please comment about my chances in a) McGill b) McMaster c) SFU d) York e) Alberta f) Calgary? [*=1]Can you name, for me, some safe schools? [*=1]Taking the GRE again and improving quant score will how much help for the mentioned school? THANK YOU!
  13. I'm curious about how I stand. Looking to get into either U of T (doctoral, preferably) for MA or LSE (MSc in Econ or EME) Type of Undergrad: Top 5 Canadian school, Business (Finance) and Mathematics dual degree Undergrad GPA: 3.9/4.0 GRE: Q: 170, V: 164, W: 4.5 Math Courses: Calc I, II (AP, no mark); Calc III (A+); Linear Algebra (A+); Intro to Computer Science (A+); Universally standardized intro stats course (A+); Probability Theory (with Calc III prerequisite) (A-); Game Theory (A+); Real Analysis (A-); Differential Equations (A+); Computational Data Science (A); Probability Theory II (with Real Analysis prerequisite) (A); Time Series Analysis (A) Econ Courses: Intro, Intermediate, Advanced Micro and Macro (A+ in all six); Mathematical Economics (A+); Econometrics I (A+); Applied Econometrics (A) Finance Courses: Finance I, Finance II, Corporate Finance, International Finance, Portfolio Theory, Financial Derivatives (all A+) Letters of Recommendation: One economics professor, one quantitative finance professor. Research Experience: Very little academic research experience; all of my research experience is professional. Research Interests: Macroeconomics, developmental economics Work experience: Worked every summer at various firms, most recently at a prestigious investment bank. I guess this is sort of relevant and it would certainly be in my SOP; I want to do a Master's degree, more than anything else, because I love economics. I can continue at the firm I last worked, and it would be a solid end in itself - from what I've seen, many people who finish MAs in economics end up in the very job I would end up in. But for some naive misguided reason I feel the need to complete graduate studies in economics. Maybe part of me feels I can make a difference in the world with it. I don't know.
  14. Hello, I am a newbie and this is my second attempt to post this. I'm a slightly older applicant for a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior. Age: 36 GMAT: 750 (V 42, Q49) Undergraduate: Lahore University of Management Sciences. Undergrad GPA: 3.59/4 Graduate: Masters in Management from Oxford University Grad GPA: Upper second class Graduate: MBA from Emory University Grad GPA: No grades. Research experience: 1 year working as a researcher in an economic think tank. 3 months in 2018 working with an OB researcher at Oxford University. Practical experience: 5 years in financial industry both in Pakistan and on Wall Street in the United States Target: UoT, McGill, UBC, Queens, HEC Montreal, York, and Simon Fraser. My dream schools are UoT, McGill, and UBC but I guess those may not be an option due to my age and the fact that I have been in the industry too long? I have tried to rectify that by currently working as a research assistant for a professor in OB in the UK. Any advice? Does anyone have the essay questions for UoT, York, and Queens? I can't find them online and I guess the application portal isn't open yet. Any good links for writing the research objectives and letter of intent?
  15. Hi all, There's a pretty large group of Canadian applicants on here, and I've noticed similar threads in previous years. Hopefully this gets a sticky post!
  16. Hello, I am graduating from REDACTED this year, and I am likely going to a 100-150 RePEc ranking (REDACTED) Economics university for my MA degree in Canada in fall 2018. I wasn't able to get into Toronto MA and likely will not get into Western MA. Here is my undergrad profile: Math: Intro to Proofs A-, First Year Calculus B+, Linear Algebra B+, Calculus of Several Variables A, Stats I A-, Stats II C, Discrete Math B, Differential Equations C, Groups and Symmetries B+, Vector Calculus C-, Combinatorics B- Economics: Intro to Economics B+, Intermediate Micro (Credit/No Credit Basis), Intermediate Macro C-, Urban Economics A, Econometrics I A+, Advanced Macro B+, Advanced Micro A+, Public Economics A, Econometrics II A+ I am going to put in a lot of effort during my MA and am confident that I can do really well in it as well as on the GRE. If this happens along with my poor undergrad GPA (3.0 cumulative), do I have any chance at a strong PhD program in my fields of interest? I am interested in econometrics and micro theory. Experimental economics also seems interesting to me. Would I have any chance at say a top 30 program in these fields? Ranking doesn't matter too much to me but I'd like to end up in academia at a relatively strong department so it does play a part. I was thinking that if I am not able to get into a strong program I can also try to work in the government for a year or two and apply after. I am willing to do a lot if it means getting into a strong program. Any help is appreciated.
  17. Hi there, I posted a profile evaluation back in in the spring, but figured I would post again with updates now that the forum is more active lately. Applying (all MA): University of Toronto, Queens University, UBC, McGill University, LSE, UCL, PSE- Any others I should shoot for? PROFILE Type of Undergrad: Mid-level Canadian research university. Undergrad GPA: 4.06/4.3 *Note: the Canadian GPA system is essentially the same as the US, with an A grade receiving a 4.0, but an A+ grade (above 90) receives a 4.3. GRE: 162/167/6.0 Q/V/AWA Math Courses (Undergrad Level): Calc I-II (A+,A), Statistics I-II (A+,A), Linear Algebra (A-), Multivariate Calc for Economics(A). Econ Courses (Core): Advanced Macro A+, Advanced Micro A+, Intermediate Micro A+ Intermediate Macro A+ Other Econ Courses: Took 6 or 7 mid to upper year econ field courses with A- to A+ in all. Econ Courses (Grad Level): Took a masters level Health economics course with a well-published prof and received an A+ Other Courses Taken: 7 philosophy courses with A+ to A- grades. A few Poli Sci with A/A-. LOR: Strong letter from a well-known Canadian prof (top 5 PhD, top 5% RePec, written textbooks etc.), knows me fairly well. Very strong letter from unknown prof who knows me very well. Research Experience: Econometrics term paper, won award for best econometrics paper. Honours thesis (also won award for the best honours thesis). RA (part-time) for AP after undergrad. Working in a government research/policy position. Teaching Experience: Private tutor for 1 year. Research Interests: Development, Public Finance, Health, Labour
  18. Hi everyone- I've been lurking for a while, but I'd like to ask for some help on starting my graduate schools search process with the goal of applying in the Fall or Winter of this year. I just graduated from my BSc Hons and I'm taking a year to work and apply for graduate programs for the Fall 2018 term. So far I'm primarily interested in Canadian MA programs (UofT, UBC, Queens, McGill) but I'd like some feedback on my profile to determine whether it's worth it to apply to any top international programs like LSE, UCL, Boston University or Duke. My long term goals are to work in the public sector in Canada, an international organization or in a think tank. If I can accomplish this with only an MA then I'd be open to it, but I'd also like to keep the door open to pursue a PhD if need be. If anyone has any tips on applications, or any suggestions on programs that I ought to look into, that would be much appreciated. Here's my details: PROFILE Type of Undergrad: Mid-level Canadian research university, with a reasonably strong MA and PhD programs. Undergrad GPA: 4.06/4.3 *Note: the Canadian GPA system is essentially the same as the US, with an A grade receiving a 4.0, but an A+ grade (above 90) receives a 4.3. GRE: Still have to write. Reasonably sure I can do well- my fundamental math skills are very good and my analytical writing is superb thanks to beginning my undergrad as a philosophy major. Math Courses (Undergrad Level): Calc I-II (A+,A), Statistics I-II (A,A), Linear Algebra (A-), Multivariate Calc for Economics(A+). Econ Courses (Undergrad Level): Standard Intro and Intermediate Micro/Macro with A/A+ in all. Labour (A+), Public Finance (A+), Poverty and Inequality (A), Advanced Micro and Macro (A+ in both). Econometrics I-II (A+, A). Bunch of other economics electives with A- to A+ in all (except for a B+ in international finance!!!). Econ Courses (Grad Level): Took a masters level Health economics course with a well-published prof and received an A+ Other Courses Taken: 7 philosophy courses with A+ to A- grades. A few Poli Sci with A/A-. LOR: I have commitments for 3 letters. Strong commitment from a very well known prof in my field of interest- Yale grad, visiting prof at Oxford, published 100+ articles and over a dozen books. Another from a reasonably well-known prof who taught me the graduate health course (UBC grad). 3rd is basically unknown but was my honours advisor and knows me very well. Research Experience: Econometrics term paper, won award for best econometrics paper. Honours thesis (also won award for the best honours thesis). Currently working as a research assistant in the Canadian government. Teaching Experience: Private tutor for 1 year. Research Interests: Poverty and Inequality, Public Finance, Population Health, Labour Concerns: I realize after reading this forum that many top students take many more math courses than I did. I do very well in math, but I elected to pursue a philosophy minor instead. While I do not regret it, since I feel that it's benefited me personally and intellectually, I wish I had taken Analysis. I will almost definitely graduate top 5 in my class, but I feel like that would mean more if I had gotten an A grade in an advanced mathematics course. Hopefully doing well on the GRE will signal that I have math ability.

Hopefully doing well on the GRE will signal that I have math ability.
  20. Hi ! I am a prospective Phd Business applicant. Can anyone recommend good MA Economics Programs as a preparation for a Phd in Business in Canada? I cam across UBC, Waterloo and Concordia. These programs require a good economics undergrad, and are geared towards a Phd in Economics...any suggestions? Thanks! :eager:
  21. Hello guys! currently finishing my B.sc econ, minor and math at a university in Canada (not a top university) doing to co op program so looking into applying for fall 2017. I'm strongly considering doing a masters degree in econ before entering the workforce and need some help on realistic universities or ranking range (ie top 50/100). My overall average is not very competitive will mostly likely finish at a 75% due to screwing around in my first year in biology haha. But my scores in economics/math courses are well, 88 in intermediate Macro, 80 in intermediate micro, 79 in calculus and statistics. Currently in econometrics and mathematical econ which i know i should try to score well in. Planing on taking the GRE this summer and paying for the prep courses to try and score high. All this considered if anyone could provide insight on any schools i should consider (yes i understand i probably wont get into any tier one programs) in Canada or the US. Thanks.
  22. Hi I am a pharmacy student (pharm.D) and now it's time for me to choose my thesis subject. These are the departments in my faculty that i can choose to work with: 1-Medicinal Chemistry 2-Pharmaceutical Biotechnology 3-Pharmaceutics 4-Pharmacognosy 5-Pharmacology and Toxicology 6-Pharmaceutical and Food Control 7-Clinical Pharmacy I want to study phd in the future and most of my friends chose to study phd in the field that their Pharm.D thesis was.And they told me that my thesis subject is very important for applying for phd. I want to study phd in another country (maybe north america or sweden) so i want you to help me choose a department that increases my chance of getting accepted. Thankyou
  23. Hi, so I was accepted to a number of top canadian economics programs this year (the top 3) but i've decided to defer by a year. I'm beginning to wonder whether it might be wiser for me to go for an applied economics program instead of the pure economics streams given my interests and strengths. At the time of application i hadn't realized how much the top three programs focus on theory/mathematical econ, and my interests had never been in those streams as much as they had been on things like policy and applied economic research. I no longer intend to pursue a PhD in Economics, so the relative ranking of the different programs doesn't matter so much anymore. I am not sure which schools offer a more applied economics program and aside from a few schools with explicit "applied econ" named programs (regina, etc.) I am a bit directionless on this. Would McGill be an applied econ school, for example? I know that Mcmaster offers an MA in Applied Economic Policy specifically which seems interesting, and that Dalhousie offers a Master in Development Economics which I imagine would be more on the applied side. I guess I'm wondering 1) what schools in Canada would be good for more applied economic programs (I have strong grades and was admitted to the "top 3" canadian schools for regular MA so i think i'd get in to the others) 2) what exactly I could expect as the difference between the programs---would it just mean that the micro and macro courses would be less proofs based and more calculation based?
  24. Hello, I've been accepted to Oxford's MSc Economics for Development program and am very tempted to take the offer over my other pure economics admissions (Canadian schools--UBC, Toronto, Queen's). The problem is that I don't know whether the program is economically rigourous enough for admission to good PhD programs (in Canada or USA) or if it is well regarded. I know that the 2 year MPhil is generally highly regarded, but the one year MSc is split between the development and economics departments at Oxford---we'd take year long courses in micro, macro, and econometrics as well as courses in related development fields (poverty, inequality, health, environment, etc.). I don't know whether a PhD program would view thee other courses as being insufficiently theoretical or empirically based. I know the program does place graduates into Oxford's own DPhil program, but I believe you can enter the DPhil straight from BA so that's not a great indicator. I worry about schools (e.g. in Canada) that require economics Master's for admission to PhDs---would they view this as more of a development degree than an economics degree? Moreover, would the lack of courses in other areas of economics (labour, public, IO, etc.) hurt me in my preparation?
