  1. Hey everybody! Let me begin by noting that this is my first post on urch so I apologize in advance for any lack of information on my part, double posts, or inappropriateness of this post in any way. As it is getting near the April 15 deadline to choose schools, I am faced with the dilemma of choosing between American University in DC or UCSC out west. I come from a physics background so my knowledge regarding economics programs is somewhat limited. Additionally, my fields of interest are probably more likely to change than someone who has had more exposure to the dismal science than I. Currently, however, I am most interested in International Finance, Macroeconomics, and possibly Macro-Development. From many of the rankings that I have seen, UCSC out ranks AU handily and is exceedingly strong in international economics as a whole. I have visited both schools and would not have a problem living in either city; although, I think that I would slightly prefer DC. On the other hand, the location, relative visibility, and internship opportunities of AU compared to UCSC would seem to be a huge bonus for AU. Given that my post-graduation plans as of now are to work in the private sector or for some type of policy organization (places like IMF/WB), does the location of AU more than make up for its ranking deficit? Also, I noticed that AU uses Klein for its math camp whereas UCSC uses Simon and Blume. From what I have gathered on these forums is that this would indicate that UCSC's program is more mathematically intense than AU's. Is there any way that I could make AU's program more mathematically intense based on my chosen fields and research track? My worry is that I will be stuck doing basic calculus (a bit of an exaggeration) if I attended AU's program. I appreciate any feedback you all could give me.
  2. Hello Everyone, I am international applicant. I have been accepted into two MA in Econ programs. One being the University of New Hampshire MA in Economics Program. I have received a full tuition waiver and a small amount of scholarship. The other one is the MS in Economics program at Tufts University. Here I have received a 10% tution waiver. The program cost is around $46K. Tufts has the option of a one-yr or a two-yr Masters program. I am planning to do the one-year course which does not involve writing a thesis. I do not intend to pursue a PhD in economics after completing the Masters. I am looking at it as a stepping stone to get an industry job. Given these circumstances which one of the two would be a better choice. Being an international applicant I do not know much about the reputation of these universities in the job market. I could not get enough data on MA rankings etc to compare the two. This forum has been a huge help for me during the application process. It would extremely helpful if you could share your opinions. I really appreciate your help. Thanks :)
  3. Hi. I'd like to compare these two choices. While Minnesota has a much higher rank and a better placement record than Penn State, its forte is macro whereas I have a strict preference for microeconomic theory which is what the PSU department is strong in. Moreover, Penn State is a rising department so who knows what the placements will be like by the time I graduate. Another potential problem with PSU is the high attrition rate, they have a reputation for kicking out a non-trivial fraction of the entering class by the end of first year. I am indifferent location-wise ad funding is similar. Any insights would be very helpful!
  4. My current interests are in Macro, International Finance and Financial Econometrics, but I also have interests in Applied Micro. Looking for any input, which programs are the strongest out of UNC, ASU, UVA, and Indiana, in terms of training and placement. Any advice is appreciated!
  5. Hi everyone, I'm entering my senior year and I'm trying to narrow down schools to apply to from a large list. I was hoping I could get some suggestions based on my profile and interests. Without further ado... PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Econ major, math minor, Top 75 USnews Undergrad GPA: 3.5 Type of Grad: none Grad GPA: n/a GRE: taking in summer - no disappointment expected Math Courses: calc 1-3 (A/A/C+), Real Analysis (current, 100% anticipate A), Linear Algebra (taking in Fall), Probability Theory (in Fall), ODEs (taking next Spring), Statistical Inference (next Spring) Econ Courses: intro/ intermediate micro / macro (A/A/A/A), Econ Statistics (A-), Health Economics (current, expect A), Econometrics (current, expect B+ or A-), Mathematical Econ (Fall), Environment and Resource Econ (Spring). also writing thesis. Other Courses: some psychology and neuroscience classes (sparkling GPA, formerly my major, but thoroughly irrelevant) Letters of Recommendation: One from current research adviser / probable first reader on my thesis - he is a freshman professor; another from probable second reader who is moderately known micro prof., third to be determined. Research Experience: REU research (this semester, summer, and likely all of next year) in applied micro - specifically health economics; formerly did pharmacological research at the medical school, and did a summer REU program in neurobiology (most of my experience before this semester is not relevant to economics) Teaching Experience: tutored calculus Research Interests: Applied microeconomics, Resource economics, Health economics, human capital, time preferences SOP: who knows, time has not yet come. Assumed strong enough. Other: My low GPA is attributable to science classes from my two years as a pre-med student. I lack upper division econ and math for the same reason. I currently have an enormous list to whittle down, but the tops are Michigan and Wisconsin. I also like UNC chapel hill, Michigan State, and I've been advised to apply to Duke though I know little about the school. A little further down, UC Boulder seems like a decent fit for me. I need help filling out the distribution. Do I have a realistic chance of getting into Wisconsin or Michigan with funding?
