  1. Hi, I was accepted at Columbia and Northwestern PhD in Economics and I am waitlisted at NYU. So at this point, I am deciding between Columbia and Northwestern, but still considering NYU in case of getting off waitlist. I will really appreciate for any opinion of which place seems as the best place to go. My research interests are more inclined towards financial economics and micro theory (where I know NWU has a strong tradition), however I am opened to other fields, so I am looking for the best overall department (any opinion regarding this I will appreciate it a lot). Also, I will like to go to the place that maximizes the chances of getting a good/decent academic placement (placements seem similar for the three programs, but maybe someone has a different opinion). Thanks a lot!
  2. Has anyone done the Columbia GSB summer research internship? Summer Research Internship | Programs Any testimonials about it?
  3. Hi all, I was an international student and I graduated 2 years ago. I was interested in doing graduate studies but I ultimately returned to my home country to work for 2 years, trying to reduce the financial burden as an international student. After 2 years, I have paid off most of the debts and I am thinking of returning to university in 2020 to do a master degree (and eventually a phd in public policy/economics). My gpa is a bit mediocre as I did pretty bad in most of the arts and humanities courses. Just want to know if graduate programs such as oxford econ mphil / lse msc econ etc. would be a long shot for me? I understand that they are typically looking for 3.7+ GPA students and I am not sure if this is a hard admission requirement and would they focus mainly on econ/math courses only? I am also quite concerned about the courses in red. Are these red flags to admission that will lead me to a quick ding? I am particularly concerned about my withdrawals and C+ in a seminar course. Also, if I am lucky enough to receive an offer and perform well at these masters programs, will it overcome my academic deficiencies in undergrad? Thank you so much! ------------------------- Profile: Economics undergraduate at Columbia (transferred from a top 20 majoring in econ and business) GPA: 3.55 Math courses at old uni: Calcs I II (A) Business stat (A) Maths for economics (W) Math courses at Columbia: Calc I III (A, i have taken them again at Columbia) Intro to probability (A) Intro to statistics (A) Maths for economics (A) Stat reasoning (W) Economics at old uni: Microeconomics for Business (A-) Macroeconomics for Business (A) Political economy (B+) Intermediate micro (A) Intermediate macro (A) Intro to econometrics (A) Economics at Columbia: Intermediate micro (A) Intermediate macro (A) Financial economics (A-) Money and banking (A-) Public economics (A-) Corporate finance (B+) Industrial organization (W) Monetary policy seminar (C+) Planned: linear algebra and real analysis from harvard extension or illinois online
  4. Hi all, I'm trying to decide if I would prefer Georgetown or Columbia should I be accepted to both (what a thought!). Georgetown has easier admissions requirements with the GRE Quantitative just needing to be at least in the 80th percentile, and I'm sure Columbia is more like 90th to 95th percentile. One thing that left me wondering about Columbia is that they have you write a 2nd year paper, and I've heard of 3rd year papers, but I thought the 1st and 2nd years were used mainly for coursework and fulfilling TA or RA duties? Does seem to be a bit of a rush. I don't know too much about either program, but Georgetown says on their website that you can take 2 semesters of leave of absence, and maybe this a reflection of the pace of the program?
  5. I've been accepted to all the three programs stated above. No funding. Needed a little bit of help to decide between these 3. I'm not sure if I want to specialise in development econ, but it is something I've really enjoyed studying and researching during my undergrad. Also have one internship in the same. Columbia is significantly more expensive, however there are perks of being able to work in the US after a degree. The job market in UK is significantly worse. Oxford and LSE offer progression to PhD, Columbia doesn't. Most probably, interested in a PhD after masters. Also, as far as funding is concerned, I'll be able to fund my masters, but will need funding at the PhD level. If anybody could provide an insight into any of these programs, it would be really helpful.

  7. Hi - this is a new programme - has anyone heard of acceptance dates and any detail on the academic level of course structure? Columbia has a high-mid ranked PhD programme and rumours this MA breaks the trend of US terminal masters and is intended to be a feeder to PhD. http://econ.columbia.edu/masters
  8. I am unable to take a decision and my BGSE deadline is this Thursday. Given I want to specialize in Macroeconomics and that both schools are strong in Macro, my assessment of the situation is as follows. Given the Program/department reputations and the cost benefit analysis, the only reason to choose the MA Economics at Columbia over BGSE would be because of it's brand name (Ivy League) and probable advantage in getting into a top PhD program in the USA. Although I'm not sure about to what extent the Columbia program (with all advanced courses as elective) would give me a better chance vis-a-vis BGSE (Advanced track) in getting into a top PhD. Plus it's their first year as a Masters program. Also I have questions as to what extent the Star Faculty at Columbia would be involved in the MA program. Plus there is another debate about the PhD courses oriented nature of a European masters vis-a-vis a professional bent of an American Masters. I would be grateful for any insights, suggestions and ideas. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
  9. Hello, I need some help deciding (fairly quickly) which masters program to choose as to give me the best shot at a PhD in Economics. With aims to do financial econometrics. Background: Undergrad: UK top 15 university, gained a 1st class honours in BSc Economics Postgrad: UK top 5 masters econ program but suffered illness during the exam term so my marks aren't as high as I would have hoped Currently: Working as an Economist at an economic consultancy Options: MA Stats at Columbia, MA Econ at Boston University, MSc Economics Barcelona GSE (Just applied, I know it is really late but I am quite hopeful) I need help in decided which to choose as none are funded and I hope to get onto a funded PhD next year. I would really appreciate any opinions you guys/girls have on either of these programs and progression onto PhD. Thanks!
  10. I am interested in getting a PhD from NYU Stern/Columbia GSB in finance/statistics/decision theory at some point in the future. I have an offer to work as quant at an IB in NYC. I'd like to know if undertaking courses at NYU/Columbia from the PhD curriculum part-time to the extent possible, would a. Strengthen my application(I have an undergraduate+masters in engineering + some quant experience) b. If admitted, reduce the time I spend completing the PhD, full-time, to 2-3 years - assuming I manage to do most of the coursework in the curriculum part-time while working. More generally, how could one utilize a few years spent as a quant in NYC to prepare for a business PhD? Apologies if this question has already been asked/answered before - forum search didn't return anything relevant.. Thanks!
  11. Hi. I have narrowed down my options to just Columbia Econ and Columbia GSB (Finance and Econ PhD). It seems to me I can do pretty much the same things in these two programs in terms of taking courses and finding advisers. Both programs seem to have much more impressive placement records in most recent years. I am interested in (empirical) Finance and Macro. And I cannot put a priority on one field over the other. The funding they provide are also similar. So I really don't know how to decide. Any suggestion or insider info are greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot!
  12. Hi, I find there is no any information about the completeness of application at Columbia online site. Following the program's instruction I try to check my status here https://admissions.columbia.edu/?s%.5Fid=29fdcd948978a7da8ee32&p%.5Fr%.5Fid=29fdcd948978a7da8ee32&p%.5Ft%.5Fid=adol&athn%.5Ftype=session&jsenabled=true&tran%.5B1%.5D%.5Ftran%.5Fname=adot&tran%.5B1%.5D%.5Foutput%.5Ftype=html%.5Fnscp4 , but it says no results matched. Do your guys have the similar situation? Thanks. The application ID can be found in the application status form of Downloadable Forms in the online application menu at the left side.
  13. Hi everyone, I am trying to download time series data from the WB WDI data bank. However, when I download the data it is always cross country. I know that there is a way to make it time series, but cant remember how to do it. Please help me! If anyone goes to Columbia and knows how to access the data library through their Columbia account, please let me know.
