  1. Profile: Undergraduate University: UC Santa Barbara Undergraduate Major: Economics Undergraduate GPA: 3.86 GRE: 166 Q/161 V/4 AWA *Should I retake the GRE? What are the consequences if I don’t score 167 + on the quantitative reasoning section?* Econ Courses Microeconomic Theory (A), Intermediate Microeconomic Theory (-A), Advanced Microeconomic Theory (B+), Econometrics (A), Advanced Econometrics (A), Game Theory (A), Senior Thesis (A) Math Course Multivariable Calculus (A), Linear Algebra (A), Advanced Linear Algebra (A), Differential Equations (A), Methods of Analysis (A+), and Real Analysis (A) Statistics, Computer Science, and Data Science Courses Introduction to Computer Science (A), Probability Theory (A-), and Introduction to Data Science (A) Research Experience I’ve spent the last two years working as a research assistant at the Federal Reserve. I currently work as the Corporate Bonds and Credit Quality RA in the Capital Markets section. I regularly prepare charts and answer ad hoc questions for economists and board members. I also dedicate time towards economist’s independent research; I’m currently working on two papers concerning monetary policy. Before joining the Board, I wrote a senior thesis and did some cleaning/entry work for a professor at UCSB. Letters of Recommendation Two Board economists and one economist from UCSB; I have worked with each of them all for at least a year. Teaching Experience I recently revamped the R and Linux training in Capital Markets for incoming RAs. I also volunteer for a data science course taught at Howard University in collaboration with the Federal Reserve. Research Interests I’m broadly interested in applied economic research. Although I enjoy my work surrounding empirical corporate finance, I also have an interest in household finance. Applications Top 25 economics Ph.D. programs and a handful of finance Ph.D. programs. *Should I consider applying to more finance programs given my research interests and the state of my profile?* My questions are highlighted in red. All other comments and suggestions welcome. Thank you for reviewing my profile :)
  2. Hi guys ! I graduated from degree of Computer Engineering from NTU, Singapore & recently MBA from NUS, Singapore, and I have 13 years' experience in tech consulting & project management. I also passed 2 levels of CFA exams. I started my career as a Java & SQL programmer but have not done it for a few years now. I am considering to do a masters degree in Econ & Data Science with the goal to become an economist with data science capabilities in doing predictive economic analysis. I don't want to do a PhD because it takes too long. I recently did some research of US schools and found below programs: -MS Applied Econ, Boston College -MA Applied Econ, George Washington (option to add Graduate Certificate in Data Science) -MS Applied Econ, U Maryland CP -MS Applied Econ & Management, Cornell -MS Applied Economics & Econometrics (AEE), USC -MA Econ, Boston U -MS Econ, Georgia Tech -MA Econ, Columbia -MA Econ, NYU -MS Quantitative Econ, U Pittsburgh -MA Econ, Duke -MIDS, Duke My questions: 1. Is it a good idea to become an economist or should I be a data scientist instead? AFAIK data scientists are more in-demand than economists but I am personally interested in economics, and given my tech background, I think it makes sense for me to combine economic analysis with data science. 2. Would doing MA/MS Applied Econ degree be sufficient to find a good job as an economist in a public/private company in the US, or is PhD required? I prefer not to do PhD as it takes too long with low stipend. My math background is not sufficient to do PhD Econ anyway. 3. How difficult is it to get to MA/MS Applied Econ programs? NTU did not publish GPA of my undergrad, but I got Third Class Honors and I calculated my GPA as 2.6/4.0, that was 17 years ago. My MBA CAP was 4.2/5.0, which should be equivalent to 3.5/4.0 GPA, that was only 3 years ago. I will get letter of recommendations from my former employers. I would say the quality of LoRs would be quite good. I didn't take GRE as it is optional at most schools for now. How much will the schools weigh my undergrad GPA that was long ago, as opposed to more recent MBA GPA and work experience? Does CFA help (there are econ components in the exams)? Would getting an LoR from my MBA economics professor help in my application? Should I take the GRE? Also, are the above schools realistic for me? 4. In the above list, only BC & GWU's curricula combine both applied economics & data science. Are there other graduate programs that combine the 2? Appreciate your help ! Will
  3. Hi: I'm hoping to start my MA in Economics next fall (2020) at the University of Hawaii, but really want to get another graduate degree from Harvard Extension School during my spare time to beef up my qualifications, and wanted to see what you guys thought, if I should choose (a) International Relations, or (b) Data Science. To me, data science seems redundant from what I learn in the economics curriculum, and maybe not as useful as a background in international relations, particularly since my research interests are either policy-related or international in scope. What do you think I should pursue?
  4. Letter of Intent I appreciate this opportunity to provide further background information in support of my application for Environmental Economics PhD Program in XXX. I believe that my educational background, work experience and deep interest in the chosen field of study make me a very good candidate for the program. I am very passionate about academics and research, and am also passionate about impacting society both near and far. As long as I remember myself I have always known that I want to study Economics and to be more specific its facets that concern Environmental issues. As a child I used to wait for the festival of lights, Diwali to come. We celebrate this festival with lots of sweets, lamps and new clothes. With time the way we celebrate the festival and for that matter any good occasion has changed. The celebration of this festival is considered incomplete without the use of plenty of firecrackers. Firecrackers primarily contain sulphur, carbon, added chemicals, barium nitrate, aluminium, copper, lithium and strontium. When these firecrackers are lit, these chemicals are released into the air, reducing air quality drastically. To make matters worse, Diwali usually takes place in October or November when many cities in northern India face fog. The gases released from the firecrackers are trapped in this fog and increase the level of pollution exponentially. The levels of pollution in the air rise astronomically during these days. During my growing years I wondered where did the polluted air go or is there a natural sink provided by mother earth. There were many unanswered questions which motivated me to read more on the subject. My eagerness to know more about the ecosystem, climate and natural resources led me to my master’s programme in Indian Institute of Forest Management. I consider myself fortunate to have trained under the guidance of highly experienced and prominent faculty Dr. Madhu Verma on Ecological Economics and Environmental Valuation. It exposed me to the harsh reality of what is at stake. We need to understand that there is an intimate connection between the economics of development and the cost of environment conservation. Heartening to see that Ecosystem Services fall outside the present configuration of markets, they remain un-priced, un-owned and unaccounted in economic terms. My graduate coursework provided me theoretical knowledge including economic models: methods, theory and application of tools used by companies in their holistic approach of life cycle assesment. The classes enriched my understanding of the actors' of environment conservation and sustainable development such as the government, organization and community. During this time I realized that our environment is slowly heading to the point of no return, and unless we do something about it. I gained insight into the environmental impacts of the future climate change and the economic repercussions it would follow. As part of the course curriculum I conducted a survey to understand the relationship between poverty and environmentalism by analyzing the responses of poor to their imminent neighbourhood environmental issues. It is during such visit that I realised the importance of creating awareness, inclusive growth, sustainable development and minimum emissions with minimal impact to environment. During my years in college, I have given talks on topics like Stern Review: The Economics of Climate Change, Silent Spring, Towards a Green Economy – Pathways to Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication, Forest carbon index and The BASF Eco-Efficiency Life Cycle Tool. During my study and field experience, I realized the importance of data analysis and number crunching, because we cannot control what we cannot measure. I felt that before going further on the way of academic research, it would be useful to get some experience on data analytics. Desire to learn analytics to support my research along with knowledge of environment and economy, landed me a job in one of the leading Microfinance Institute in bangalore. After completing my masters program, I joined the company where I am working as Market Risk Analyst. Working here has increased my ability to research, analyze and present key components for management's decision making process. My work typically involves qualitative analysis on the market risk and the liquidity risk of the firm. Some of my duties include data analysis, automation of reports, predictive modelling, presentations and sharing insights with the management team. During my free time I work on freely available environment related datasets to analyse and build model. I wish to use my data analysis skills to analyse the available data and build an efficient model that would give insight to environment problems and the solution that can have greater impact. I seek to contribute to the topic of climate reporting by answering key questions regarding the status quo of international climate change reporting regimes; comparing mandatory versus voluntary disclosure schemes and effect on reducing CO2 emissions; and analyzing investors' reaction to climate-related disclosures. Research at will reinforce my knowledge on environmental economics and put these concepts in practice to achieve . We have lots of data available on the change in land use pattern, carbon emission over years, change in forest cover over years, climate change over years and many related fields. To make an informed policy decision, we need to analyse these data, understand the future impact of the business-as-usual model and corrective measure to reduce these negative impact. I like to think myself as an adventure seeking enthusiastic person who is capable to rise up to any challenge. I have variety of interests which include painting, travelling, trekking and running. I now wish to continue my academic career with a PhD in Economics, and I cannot image a better place to perform my research than in the department of economics at the XXX of Economics. The prospect of studying and learning in XXX University which has a great blend of faculty and students from all over the world excites me. I realize the highly competitive demands of the program I am applying to and believe that my drive and passion for Environmental Studies will help me to excel in my future research. Thank You very much for considering my application and for your time!

  6. I am about to give my GRE by the end of next month. I am having trouble with solving percentile and Data Interpretation questions. Can anyone please suggest right place to practice that sums. Is there anyone who is gonna take GRE in next couple of months if there we can study together.
  7. So I'm an undergraduate research assistant at my university right now but I don't necessarily think what I'm doing is going to be a strong signal to graduate programs - I could be wrong, but it's a lot of general news research, data collection and input, some light data analysis, minimal programming, and a touch of writing. I enjoy the work and it pays well but I guess I'm not sure what type of RA position I should be looking for in this. Some help would be appreciated. Also, I plan to do an undergraduate thesis- any tips for that? I think I'd be doing more of an empirical thesis but is a theory-thesis possible as an undergrad? If so, what kinds of preparation/exposure would I need beforehand?
  8. Need suggestions regarding best colleges and programs for MS in computer science related fields. Below are my scores & details : GRE Score : 158 (Quant) + 142 (Verbal) [unofficial] Work experience : '6 years 8 months' in I.T. firm as 'Data Warehouse ETL Developer'. Bachelor's degree : 'Bachelor of Technology' in 'Electrical & Electronic Engineering' GPA 2.7.
  9. Hello guys, I passed the first round for some full-time RA positions and am now preparing for the data tasks. If I use, say, Stata, how detailed should my comments on the code be? Furthermore, what about the complexity of the code? I heard that if you simply use built-in commands for stochastic frontier estimation, for instance, professors will not be impressed, but they might be impressed if you build towards that from scratch to show programming skills and your understanding of the underlying processes. Finally, what kind of online resources would you suggest checking in case I face some difficulties in writing the code? I know about Stata website - it provides discussions of so many interesting cases - but what about R/Matlab/Python? I will be glad to receive any other related piece of advice from you. Thanks!
  10. Hi all! I have a noisy/unconventional profile, so I'm hoping to receive some thoughtful responses to help narrow down my application list. I plan to apply for Fall 2019 to test the waters, but understand that my profile will likely benefit from another year of math classes / that I may need to reapply for 2020. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top 50ish State Flagship University Undergrad GPA (Economics major, History minor): 4.0 Type of Grad: Grad Certificate in Data Mining (1 year program, same as undergrad) Grad GPA: 4.0 GRE: 167Q/167V 4.5 AW (retaking in Nov. to hopefully improve Q) Math/Stats Courses: - Undergrad: (all A+) Calculus w/ Applications, Calculus I, Statistics - Grad: (all As): Statistical Data Mgmt I and II, Data Mining I & II - Non degree seeking: (taken after grad at a different State U, while working full-time): Calc II (A), Linear Algebra (A), Calc III (in progress, Fall 2018, likely will not wait for grade to apply), may take Differential Eq. and/or Real Analysis in Spring 2019 depending on how cycle goes. Econ Courses: (All A+s unless otherwise specified): Intro Micro, Intro Macro, Intermediate Micro (A-), Intermediate Macro, Public Finance, Urban Economics (A-), International Trade, Industrial Org, Environmental Econ Other Academic Stuff: skilled with predictive modelling and data mining/analysis, somewhat skilled with programming and querying Letters of Recommendation: 1 econ professor that I RA'ed for in grad school (will be excellent), 1 econ professor from undergrad (will be very good), 1 grad stats professor (should be strong). Research Experience: 1 year of graduate-level, part-time RAing, in risk/insurance. Will end up as co-author on forthcoming paper(s). Teaching Experience: nothing formal Work Experience: 1 year for non-profit (unrelated to econ); 1 year in high-level public sector consulting (tangentially related to econ) Research Interests: Housing markets; International development; Behavioral; RCTs Concerns: - My grad program was initially supposed to be a 2-year Applied Econ program, but I left after 1 year since I determined at the time that I only wanted the Data Mining certificate (wanted to explore, travel, work in the real world, etc.) - No econometrics - Probably no grade for Calc III when I apply, and nothing past LA (no RA, no Diff Eq yet) - Undergrad institution rank - Perception of math grades, which came later in life from non degree seeking courses - Not a ton of research Schools I'm looking at: Wisconsin, Michigan, Duke, Brown, Ohio State, Boston College, Boston University, Texas, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Georgetown, UVa, Brown, Iowa, Illinois Thank you!
  11. Hoping to get some advice here, as my situation is a bit odd-I'm a physics major with little economics experience. Ideally, I'd get an RA job at the Fed or at one of the jobs on the NBER site. However, to hedge my bets, I'm also planning on applying to several lower ranked schools in the DC area. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: US private technical institute, known mainly for its engineering and computer science departments Undergrad GPA: 3.98 Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: 167 V 169 Q Math Courses: Linear Algebra (A), Calc 3 (A), Real Analysis (Expected A), Differential Equations (A), Discrete Mathematics (A), Topology independent study (A), Mathematical Methods and Advanced Mathematical Methods for Physics (As) Econ Courses: Intro Micro (A), Intermediate Micro (Expected A) Other Courses: 2 semesters of programming in Python Letters of Recommendation: Not sure yet, but here are my options: 1: undergraduate physics capstone advisor who I've worked with for around 6 months, can speak to my independent research ability. 2: Another physics professor who I've done research for, including using R to analyze data. 3: Physics department coordinator, whom I've taken 4 classes with and been at the top of the class for each. 4: Intermediate Micro professor, who I have a decent but not outstanding relationship with. 5: lab professor who has seen my ability to conduct physics research and do data analysis. Research Experience: 1 summer working with R, 1 year on physics capstone project (focusing on physics education), currently independently reproducing an applied development paper in Stata Teaching Experience: Worked as a Learning Assistant (basically a more involved TA) for a year and a half in physics, will have TAd for intro Micro Research Interests: Development, political economy, public choice? Still not entirely sure. Would be happy with any sort of RA job, regardless of specialization. SOP: Haven't written it, but will focus on me knowing Stata, Python, and R, and being comfortable with data analysis and manipulation. So, I'd love to know if I have a shot at departments around Georgetown ranking (~50.) I'd also appreciate any advice on applying to RA jobs, including SOP, interviews, and the like. Thanks!
  12. Hi everyone, I am trying to download time series data from the WB WDI data bank. However, when I download the data it is always cross country. I know that there is a way to make it time series, but cant remember how to do it. Please help me! If anyone goes to Columbia and knows how to access the data library through their Columbia account, please let me know.
