  1. Hi everyone! I'm currently in the process of preparing my applications for Econ Ph.D. programs to start in the fall of 2022. However, I don't know if my profile is strong enough to get into a good program (T50 is my target). So here it goes! Please let me know if you believe this will be enough or if I'm most likely doomed to fail. Bachelor's degree in economics with minor in public policy. I hold a master's degree in economics. BA GPA: 4.26/5 MA GPA: 4.5/5 I did generally well in my math courses, but I slipped during my first semester and that worries me. Will that cost me the chance of getting into a Ph.D.? Differential calculus (first time): 2/5 Differential calculus (second time): 4.24/5 Integral calculus: 4.2/5 Calculus 3: 4.4/5 Probability and statistics: 4.3/5 Math for economists: 4.1/5 Real analysis: currently taking this class My thesis got a 5/5 grade and is now published as a working paper. My second publication is a book chapter (co-authored along with three other people) published by a university. I have done mostly RA work. Two years in an economics consulting firm and 1 year in an economics think tank (currently working here). I believe my LORs are pretty strong: my thesis advisor, one of my MA thesis referees, and one of my former bosses. All three hold PhDs in economics from good universities and are known in their fields of work. Since I'm from a non-English speaking country I took the Toefl test and got 120/120. GRE: in September All feedback and comments are more than welcome. .
  2. Hello Everyone, I am applying for PhD in Economics USA and UK. I have two Graduate degrees in Economics: First one is in MSc in Economics from really good university in UK (top 10) but my performance in it is very average and other one is in Mathematical Economics from good university in France with overall GPA 3.6/4. I am confused whether should I report my first masters in my Phd application, could you guys help me out? Please! The story is that I had a successful BA in Economics degree from India but it did not had math exposure. So i did not have any mathematical training which would have prepared me for my MSc degree. Honestly, I was not aware that I really need high level mathematics for graduate degree in Economics. So I had hard times during my first master. After finishing my masters, I went to do another master which provided good training in maths and economics both. Here, the mathematical training really helped me to perform well. So i am confused now to report my first master as the score from it is ver low and it will lower my chances to get in good Phd program. What do you think everyone?
  3. Hi everyone, I have an undergraduate degree in Economics from top Canadian university, GPA 2.7/4.0 I am finishing my second undergraduate degree in Computer Science from the middle rank Canadian university, GPA 3.93/4.0, with two research experience from the field of data visualization, two faculty level awards and one national award. No publication. I want to apply for the PhD in quant Marketing in the future, according to my current background, is it a good idea to pursue a Master degree in Economics to enhance my research experience in business related field? Thank you.
  4. I am an Indian student who is about to start his undergraduate degree in Economics (B.A. Hons.) from one of the top universities in India. While my academic experience of economics is still inadequate, my interest in the social sciences and mathematics is quite deep, based on my reading outside the curriculum and experience with some college textbooks. Additionally, I feel my talents have always been academic. Even though I have yet to decide for sure, I am most probably going to do research in Economics. At the very least, I plan to do a master's in the subject. My question is a general one: given that I am going to do a three-year undergraduate degree (with no double major option, so direct admission to a PhD is anyway impossible), how should I proceed to eventually end up in a T20 PhD? More specifically, (1) which master's degree will prepare me the best for a T20? (2) which master's degree is reasonably priced and/or funded? (a maximum, say, of 50,000 USD) (3) are UK M.Phil/MSc courses worth the high fees given that paying 50,000 USD in a single year, while possible, will be tough for my family (4) if possible, should I get 2-3 years work experience after my B.A. to fund further studies (will it hurt future applications?) and (5) what are the particular things I should try to add to my CV from now onwards? Obviously, my academic track record is yet to be proven. But I was a 99 percentile SAT student and my high school marks are among the best in my school (top 5 in a batch of 1000). So for the sake of this discussion, I am assuming that I shall perform at a similar level in my GRE and undergraduate courses. Thank you!
  5. Hi, I am an international student (Iran) and I want to apply for masters or Ph.D. degree in economics in Canada. But I am in a complicated situation. my bachelor degree is in Mathematics with a low GPA (2.50/4). I changed my field for masters and studied economics with a great GPA (4/4). I prefer to study masters of economics again in Canada (don't ask me why. I am living in Iran:)) ). But honestly, I don't know it is the right decision or not. My bachelor GPA is lower than all the university requirement. if I apply for masters degree again would they consider my masters GPA or Bachelor GPA? Am I eligible to be admitted to one of the universities? Furthermore, If I want to study Ph.D., how much my undergraduate GPA is important?
  6. I have an engineering undergraduate degree from a generally well-known college in a developing country, but with a GPA which is good but not stellar (some of my courses grades are bad, some decent, some great). I also have a Master's in economics with the best grades. I have two questions - first, would admission committees (top 10, top 20, or top 30) care about my undergraduate grades at all? If yes, how would they evaluate my grades (given that they would not have seen too many applicants with the same undergraduate degree)?

  9. Hi All, I completed B.Pharmacy (4 year Degree) and M.Pharmacy (2 Year Degree in Pharmaceutical Analysis) in India, I want to write FPGEE in USA. Am I eligible to write it. I have H4 EAD in USA. 10. Hi, My wife has masters in Pharmacy degree from Pune university, India and Bachelor in Pharmacy degree from Mumbai University, India. She started Bachelor degree in 2006 and completed in 2010. Total 4 years of Bachelor degree. then she started Master degree in 2010 and completed in 2012. Total 2 years of Masters degree. So her total education would be 6 years without any gap. She is a registered pharmacist in India. Does she qualify for FPGEE certification?
  11. Hi all, I am faced with a dilemma and need valuable comments. Any help would be appreciated. So, I am in my first year at a top 30 US program. However, due to personal reasons I must have to move to Europe. So I am considering applying to EU programs again. My interest is in behavioral economics. I've some questions: 1) I've been hearing things like the "ideology" or the "philosophy" of US phd and EU phd are very different. What does that translate into when it comes to brass tacks ? 2) I'm not keen on working strictly in the US post PhD and would likely go back to my country. So does my US or EU degree really matter ? 3) Also heard that EU looks at the whole admission process as "hiring a researcher" as opposed to "admitting a grad student" in the US. True ? If yes, what exactly do they look for/expect in my application 4) For a moment, ignoring the commonly believed notion that there is an unsaid "bias" against EU degrees when it comes to US job market, is a European degree really at a disadvantage ? 5) How is the research atmosphere in EU. student-advisor relations ? (of course cannot generalize this one but still.. vague idea) 6) Reapplying from a top 30 US program might help or hinder my chances ? 7) Funding outlook at EU ? 8) For behavioral econ, I am considering U of Zurich, TSE, Stockholm. Any more ? Thanks a lot ,friends! :D
  12. How old is considered old for completing PhD? I was planning on working as an RA for 1-2 years (preferably 1, not sure yet) after undergrad, and assuming I go straight into PhD after RAing, I will be 31-32 by the time I get my degree. If I just go straight into PhD, I'll manage to finish when I'm 29-30. Is 32 considered old? pLEASE HELP. Thank you.
  13. Hello, I am already 24 years old. Am I too old for law school? I already got a bachelors degree in English but I feel like it's a useless degree as I can't get any good job. I love to read a lot. However, I am not sure if I can finance my law education with my current job. Please help me. Am I too late for law school? Usually, people study law at a young age.
  14. Urch mates I am doing a master degree in economics now, I would like to ask about Ph.D. offers from my serious situation currently. I have got few offers from graduate schools I applied this cycles. However, for my personal issues, it's hard to admit but I cannot sustain my master study. In this case, my phd offers will be revoked? i.e the offers are conditional on my master degree or just unconditional? Of course, I have a bachelor, but I have no idea what this would be and it's quite sensitive to ask the departments. When I completed the phD applications I filled in the information of my master degree in progress. Is there anyone knows or was in the same boat? What is rule of the thumb?
  15. Is it worth investing one more year to have a math degree? I am currently an economics major + math minor. I will be taking most of the relevant math courses (calc12, lin alg 12, ode, pde, analysis12, real anal, num anal, topol12, etc.). However if I invest one more year and take those less important math courses (algeb12, appliedmath, complex anal, geometric calculus, etc.) I can receive a B.S. in mathematics as well. Would it be worth it to put in my time and money into getting a double degree in econ and math? or is just a minor in math enough?
  16. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Honours BA Econ at a middle-lower tier Canadian school Undergrad GPA: 3.95 Math (and math-based econ) Courses: 1st Year Calc (89), 1st year Stats (79), 2nd year Econometrics (91), 3rd year Econometrics (95), 2nd year Mathematical Economics methods (92), 3rd year Applications of Math in Economics (95) Econ core courses: 3rd year Micro (82), 4th year Micro (91), 3rd year Macro (97), 4th year Macro (94) Electives: Nearly all econ and some random tourism/politics style electives. All Econ electives are mid to high 90s, rest are high 80s. Work Exp: 2 consecutive summers working at a large Canadian bank. Analyst position. Teaching Exp: Still finishing undergrad degree this year, am TAing for a 2nd year Econ course currently. References: Professors from UBC, Guelph, and U of T Schools Applied to: Queens Econ UoT MFE UBC MA Western MA-PHD Laurier MABE (co op) Waterloo MA (co op) Guelph MA ---- Have already received admission to Laurier which seems quite early (Co op interview pending). All other schools haven't even passed their app deadline. What are my realistic odds at getting into the schools I've got listed? In addition, I think that a terminal degree is the best path for me, so I am torn as to where to go (assuming I get admission to most schools on the list). Any advice on that? I know the MFE is kind of a seperate entity from the others but it looked enticing as well, especially as a terminal degree. Cheers G
  17. Hi! I'm interested in pursuing a PhD in Finance but I'm like completely terrified of the admissions process so I'd love to get some advice about where I rank and what levels of schools I should be applying to. I have an undergrad degree in Finance with a 3.6 gpa, cum laude and I was in honors college at like a decent school, not an amazing one. I also did a dual degree so when I graduated I also got an MS in Finance with like a 3.6/3.7 gpa. My GRE scores were 162 verbal and then 167 quant. Thank you so much for any help!
