My Target Scores

  1. I received an email invitation to apply from HBS for their doctoral program (I believe using data from my GRE profile). This is a random mailer blast to anyone who scored above a certain score on the GRE isn't it? I wanted to apply for Harvard, but decided against it because I felt like I would not have a chance despite research fit. Now, I am struggling against spending $105 for the application. Someone please tell me what I can make of that email.
  2. I have a very minor question regarding on TSE. I am keen on studying at TSE but I do not speak French. :( Does TSE run its Master 2 Economic Theory and Econometrics, and the following years for Doctoral course in English? It does seems to run its Doctoral Course in English by looking at there website, but I just want to double check if it is correct. Has anyone had experience studying at TSE for M2 (or PHD) without much of French? If so, was it manageable living there?
  3. I'm looking into econ PhD programs and came across a few health econ programs (Harvard Health Policy PhD / Health Econ, Wharton Healthcare Management PhD, Stanford Health Policy PhD / Health Econ). The courses seem pretty similar to the applied micro courses in pure econ (albeit more targetted), and they have more lenient admissions. So what's the catch? Do health policy PhDs fare well in the job market compared to pure econ PhDs? Are they restricted in any way? From job market reports, it seems like the vast majority of pure econ students in top PhD programs (including Harvard Econ, MIT Econ, Stanford Econ, etc) who are interested in health end up in health care policy departments in medical / public health schools anyways. Is the trajectory really that different? If you're into health, why choose pure econ over one of these programs?
  4. Hi everyone, I found that U of T seems to eliminate the doctoral stream from their application website and I was told by them they no longer distinguish between doctoral and regular stream, but you can still choose phd courses if interested. But I saw on GC some people still post they are admitted to the doctoral stream. Does anyone receive an offer explicitly indicating you are admitted to the doctoral stream or just mention it as an option for you? And do you think MA at UofT is still a good choice if they no long have the doctoral stream. Thanks.
  5. I have experience of 10 years, includes 8 years in Petroleum Refinery industry, and currently engaged as Research Associate since more than 10 months. I appeared for GRE last week, and got unofficial score 307, V-150, Q-157. Though one of Quantitative section came out very tricky else had been scoring high (>164) in all Mocks (idea is -if necessary, can reappear to improve score). I am looking for best institutes for Doctoral in Energy Economics. If someone have more idea on this please share. The criteria for different school from search is turning out to be much aberrant. Further how far these score stand competent for admission, shall I need to reappear Or -good Essay, SOP and strong references are enough to overcome them. Please comment. Good post? http://www.www.urch.com/forums/images/buttons/ha_plus.png | http://www.www.urch.com/forums/images/buttons/ha_minus.png PROFILE: Type of Undergrad:Bachelor of Engineering- Chemical Undergrad GPA: 68.5 % in certificate-First Distinction, 66.35 % - Average for all semester # Type of Grad: Grad GPA: GRE: Unofficial scores- Verbal:150, Quantitative: 157 Math Courses: None Econ Courses (grad-level): Not applicable Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Not applicable Other Courses: Energy Manager* from Central Govt bench-marking Organisation Letters of Recommendation: Not prepared yet- 2 will be from research Professors (both from best Mgmt research institute in country), with whom I am associated as Research Associate, One shall be from either Research professor (Technical- Chem Engg) with service record of working with most prominent Research institute OR An eminent name in Economy research country wide Research Experience: Research work in Energy sector in progress- so far, Worked on Refinery, Oil and Gas ; Work in progress on LNG and coal Teaching Experience: None Research Interests: Energy Economics SOP: To be prepared Concerns: 1) Whether GRE score (each section) is sufficient to pursue Doctoral at reputed school; 2) Suggestion (or guidelines) requested to find better Schools for Energy Economics, as many search results end up showing details -grades and values- on PhD economics; 3) Scholarship is must Other: The quantitative score is low due to very tricky question in one section- else had been consistently scoring high (>164) in Mock tests. Thus, if score is not enough can reappear for GRE. Applying to: Schools well known for research in energy economics Note: # % not converted to GPA scale 4 due to ambiguity in methods among various search results. * As Energy Manager was Certificate course done- there is no possibility of Transcript, Only certificate available- Will displaying it make difference?

  8. I don't mean to just play for fun. I mean, do they have time to seriously compete in sports like golf or baseball? Also, I've been told several times that doctoral students are poor. How poor is poor(stipend, costs, etc.)?
  9. Hi, I really really need your help. I would be applying to PhD programs this year to enter a PhD program (Quant) in Fall 2013. Wanted to seek advice on my profile. Undergrad: Engineering (Comp. Sc.) Grad: MBA in Marketing from Top 20 School of India GPAs: Have been decent Letter of Recommendation: I can get two recommendation from my MBA college professors. I did a programming project in my engineering that has gone live. Would a recommendation from the professor in the engineering add value to my profile? Research paper: I have one paper published in a marketing journal. GMAT: Would be taking it in a month or two. I am working as a Marketing Manager and have close to 7 years of experience. With the job in hand it is difficult to get hands-on research experience. Please suggest how can I improve my profile as I still have some time in hand. Thanks!
