Hi:) I have received master admission from Tufts and Duke. Tufts: full tuition scholarship+grader Duke: 25% tuition waiver I want to go to a public policy Ph.D program(Harvard, Chicago, Umich, UCB, Duke). Which program is better preparation for Ph.D? The placement of master students at Duke seems better than that of Tufts. But tuition at Duke is still very expensive. Which one should I choose? Thank you!

Hi all, I have offers from Oxford and Duke for undergrad in Engineering. I am aiming at Biomedical Engineering. The puzzle is Oxford or Duke? UK vs US. More research options at Duke compared to OX. Bigger brand of OX? Better work experience opportunities in the US as compared to UK. Also, undergrad at OX and PG in US option is also open. I am from India. I welcome all kinds of inputs, suggestions, arguments, please. Thanks a million. I have 10 days to conclude!

Hi guys, could you guys help me choose between these three programs: MA Economics at NYU (Accepted) - 1.5 years MA International Economics and Finance at Brandeis (Accepted with significant scholarship) - 2 years MA Applied Financial Economics at Duke (Awaiting Decision) - 2 years Specifically, I would appreciate if you could comment on each school's academic reputation compared to each other, their recruiting facilities and employment prospects as well as career resources, taking into consideration that I am an international student. As you can tell, I'm not interested in pursuing a PhD in the future and working in the industry is the goal here. Personally, I'm interested in Financial Economics so I really like the Duke's program but am not so sure about the recruiting there. NYU is preferable in terms of location and prestige, but the program would be less financially oriented. And I just don't know enough about Brandeis but the scholarship made it a lot more attractive. Thanks!

Hey guys, Long-time lurker, first-time poster here, I'm trying to choose between Duke Econ. masters and UToronto Financial Econ. masters. My undegrad degree is in math+ econ. and my goal is ultimately a phd in economics. So how would you rank these programs according to future phd prospects. Below is what I think as of now: Toronto mfe:Pros: 16 month program, basically their 1 year MA program+ 4 finance courses. Small program, only 25 in class. TAship= ~5K a semester Paid internship for 4 month= ~20K + another possible employment for 8 month before Fall 2016 Cons: No info. on phd placement found online( not even for their MA Econ.) Duke:Pros: 2 year program, focused on economics phd preparation. Duke is better respected(?) Fine phd placement according to their website. Cons: No funds, no TAship, no internship. Any comment is valuable. I appreciate your time. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Math and Economics, at Top 3 Canadian school Undergrad GPA: 3.70 Type of Grad:- Grad GPA:- GRE: Q168, V161, AW3.5 Math Courses: Calculus I-IV: A+/A+/A/A. LA I/II: A-/A-. Proofs: A-. ODE:A, PDE:A+. Optimization: A. Group theory:A+. Diff. Geometry: A+, Classic Geometry:A-. Topology: A. Real analysis: B+. Complex analysis: A. Econ Courses (grad-level): none. Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intro Econ: A+. Intermediate micro: A+. Intermediate macro: A. Stats: B+. Monetary economics: B+. Development economics: A-. Adv. micro: A. Adv. Macro: A-. Econometrics I: A-. Other Courses: a few philosophy and french courses, entirely irrelevant. Letters of Recommendation: 1 Econ prof+ 1 Math prof+ 1 summer internship supervisor. Research Experience: limited to reproduction of an econometrics paper.

Saying hello and a request for profile evaluation :)
ladywholaughs posted a topic in PhD in Business
Hi all! New to Urch and in a strange situation. (aren't we all? :) ) anyway, until i get the hang of writing a decent post i hope y'all will bear with me :) Here's all about me - Educational Qual - BSc. (3 year bachelor's Degree) in Microbiology (University of Mumbai, India) MSc. in Health Sciences (University of Pune, India) MS in Biotechnology (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA) Nationality (I wish it didn't matter but I'm afraid it does): Indian Years of Work Experience: 5+ Industry: Biotech/Pharma After my MS I worked at a medical device company in upstate NY for a couple years before moving back to India. I work for a biotech company here and in several ways its a dream job (considering the fact that my family owns the company), but I'm yearning to get back to school as I've realized nothing really makes me as happy as working in research. I'm not saying life in research is cake-walk; just that I'm ready to take on the pain and labor for the fulfillment it'll provide. Big words ha. I have no formal background in psychology; however I've taken a couple Marketing, OB and Econ courses while at Hopkins. I've also taken statistics courses during my MSc, and have done field-based research and lab-based research. Most my marketing knowledge is self taught from reading and experience. My field of interest for my PhD research is CB/Social Psych/Marketing. While I know that my completely unrelated background could swing either ways of being an advantage or a disadvantage in terms of admissions, what I'm really looking for help in, is to find that starting point. Do I need a Masters degree in a related subject? I'm yet to take the GRE/GMAT (I've learnt that most schools accept either these days) but I scored well when I took it 5 years ago (1440/1600) and I'm not worried about test scores really. Are writing to current students/professors and campus visits of any use/encouraged/discouraged these days? I've been looking at schools and labs/ professors and I've shortlisted a few. Definitely top notch people in the field, although I'm not sure if I should list them here at this point. Starting from the ground up and aiming at the stars, I suppose! :) Looking forward to feedback/critiques! Cheers, lwl- 7 replies

I am beginning the application process for accounting PhD programs. I sat for the GRE, before it was revised. I am scheduled to sit for the GMAT in October. I am currently in my last year of undergraduate study. I will graduate with around 170 hours completed, so I will qualify to sit for the CPA exam. I intend to sit for the CPA exam next summer, although that should not impact my application. I have majored in both accounting and economics. I will graduate with a 4.00 as Valedictorian. In addition, I have taken a number of high level math and statistic courses. I have related internship experience for two summers as well. One of my top schools is Duke University. They have requested GRE over GMAT. On the GRE, I received an 800 quantitative and a 560 verbal. I have debated retaking the exam, however it would require studying the revised version, which I would have no problem doing if I thought it could increase my chances of admittance. I am not sure if I should take the revised GRE or be satisfied with the score I have. I would really appreciate any advice.

Please, take this as a public service announcement. Yeah, you only have one life and one wrong decision can make it a living hell.

Just wanted to let people know that I got admits from Ross & Duke and I am currently waiting for HBS, Wharton & Chicago GSB. Similar to everyone, I also had lots of doubts about which essay editing service should be used. After my research about the various services available and some recommendations from my friends, I decided to go with [spammy link removed]. I used their Complete School Package service for all my schools and to provide the feedback - it was awesome. What makes them special is their professional approach and the fact that you get the essays edited directly from alums who were a part of the admissions committee at the school. Besides, compared to other expensive editing services, they are very reasonably priced and that is the reason I used them for all my school essays. In addition to that, I also used their interview prep service where I got to interact with the alums from each school and received real-time feedback on how to improve upon my answers for the interview. I would recommend [spammy link removed] to anyone who is aiming to get into the top B-schools in the US. You can reply to this thread to reach out to me if you need any more details about my experience with them or for guidance with the essays (now that I am free, I would like to help people out).
