  1. Hi All, I wanted to understand how different is the selection process & research for Business PhD in Managerial Economics versus getting into an Econ PhD. Need a better understanding for a couple of reasons: 1. Though my core interest in Developmental Econ & Public Policy, my profile won't get me into a Top 30 (or 50 School). Going through research areas of profs and PhD students at Kellogg/Ross/Harvard - it aligns pretty well with what I would like to do (A lot of interesting areas with respect to institutions, countries, political science, decision making and more). For e.g: At Northwestern, there is Phd in Developmental Economics, and the MECS program at Kellogg lists Developmental Economics as an active research area. 2. How/what can I do improve my profile to get an admit - I don't want this to become a profile evaluation but want tips what one should do to get into such a program, I currently have: MBA from IIMA (top B-school in India) - I was in the top 15% of the batch but no masters/bachelors in Econ A grades in Economics related courses (except in Macroeconomics - I & never took Econometrics course) A good reco from a Harvard Econ Phd - did a Developmental Econ project under her in IIMA Planning to take RAship under an Econ prof for 18 months (10 months when I apply to colleges for Fall 2020) No other significant research credentials - one paper during undergrad in a low impact journal & currently in Digital Sales for a Technology firm for last 3 years Do courses from Coursera built credibility Thanks. Your inputs will be helpful as I'm planning to apply next year (not this season) P.S: Apologies if I'm breaking any posting guidelines - Did read through them and didn't find anything out of place here. Also, not a lot of information on Business Economics & Strategy programs (neither here nor in the PhD in Econ sub forum)
  2. Hello, I am considering applying for PhD in the US this semester (for Fall 2019) but not really sure where I should be applying to and perhaps you would give me some advices. Undergraduate: Nanyang Technological University (Singapore-Second upper class honors) GPA: 4.28/5 Math courses: (In chronological order) Calculus I/II/III, Linear algebra I/II, Probability and intro to Stats ( all B+), Stats (Higher level) (A) Real analysis and numerical analysis ( both A-) regression analysis (A-) computational economics (A+) Basic optimization (A-) Times series (B+). I did pretty badly for the first year in Singapore as it took quite a while to adjust to the new environment and language barriers. Econs courses: Macro and Micro principles (both B), Intermediate Macro (A), Intermediate Micro (A-), international monetary economics (B), Principles of econometrics (A-) Mathematical Econs (A-) Intermediate Econometrics (A-) Quant Macro (A+) Industrial Org (A) Game theory (A-) Advanced Micro (B+) and Unfortunately I got B+ for the Final Year Project. Graduate: University of Maine Current GPA: 4.00/4 Econs courses: Macro, Micro, Econometrics, Adv topics in Economics: Time series (all A) Maths courses: Biological Modeling and Simulations (A) -- There are not many math courses that I could choose from as it is offered variedly. Expected Remaining courses: Functions of Real variables I, Adv graduate topics in Maths: Linear model, Adv topics in Economics: Econometrics, Independent Studies and either Functions of Real variables II, Topology or Stochastic Systems. All the mentioned degrees are funded by Singapore scholarship and Fulbright Program. I also earned other scholarships to study in Japan and Australia but declined the offers. Work experiences: None as it is restricted by the sponsors. Intended Schools: BU, Boston College, University of Maryland, UMinnesota, Carnegie Mellon, UCSD and a few of those very top tier: Stanford, Yale, Columbia, NYU Fields: Macro Economics, Income Disparity, Industrial organizations, Monetary Policies. LOR: Two letters from Prof. at UMaine (econs prof. graduted from Boston College and math prof. from Cornell and I assume these letters should be a very good one given their responses) and another one either from NTU or UMaine (uncertain but likely positive as I have only attended their classes) GRE scores: Verbal: 146, Quant: 167, AWA: 3.5. What I worry the most is that I did not have any work experiences as RA as well as no publications but rather papers from courses I have attended. The current degree is also non-thesis but as I am worried that I might not finish it on time (by May 2019) I would have to use my own fund until the thesis is done which is not feasible. I have relatively poor grades for undergrad math courses during the early years in undergrad and the verbal score is also way lower than what I have expected it to be. I will have to retake it but if this is what I have to submit, would there be any chance at all that I could get into those programs mentioned? and if there is any other programs that I would have higher chances. Thank you.
  3. Hi guys, it'd be really cool if someone could tell me where I'm at (top 10 / 20 / 30?). I'll apply to the econ PhD next fall to (hopefully) start in september 2018 and I'm from a top 10 canadian university. The reason why I don't have much math classes is that I chose to study economics really late (last year of my undergrad degree in business). I was planning on taking over my father's company, but it went bankrupt so I had to find something else at the last minute. Nevertheless, I'm happy that I discovered that passion that I now have for economics! Also, for the verbal and analytic section of the GRE I think you should know that my first language is not english. Thanks! PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BBA Undergrad GPA: 4.14/4.3 Type of Grad: M.Sc in applied economics Grad GPA: 4.3/4.3 GRE: (Q / V / A) - (170 / 154 / 4) Math Courses: probabilities (A+), statistics (A), modeling and optimization (A), decision models (A+), financial mathematics (A+) and the equivalent of calculus 1 (A+) because we do it before the undergraduate degree in the province I live in. I'm planning to take real analysis 1 (summer 2017), calculus 2 (fall 2017), linear algebra (winter 2018) and calculus 3 (winter 2018). Econ Courses: macroeconomics 1-3 (all A+), microeconomics 1-3 (all A+), introduction to econometrics (A+), time series econometrics (A+), PhD level econometrics (expecting A+), international economics 1-2 (A+), development economics (A), industrial organization (A+) and public finance (A+). Other Courses: Lots of commerce classes. Letters of Recommendation: 2 top 5% (IDEAS) professors (one from my university and one from a top 15 US university) and 1 top 10% (IDEAS) proffesor (from my school). I was a RA for all three of them. Research Experience: RA for the three professors I mentioned above. Teaching Experience: TA in macroeconomics 2, introduction to econometrics and PhD level econometrics.
  4. I have a fairly atypical profile. I am 39 and have had a fairly successful Wall Street career working for a few top banks and hedge funds as a proprietary trader and a portfolio manager with a focus on macro strategy. I've thought for a while that I'd like to get back into academia as a second career and finally pulled a trigger this year in applying to most of the top 20 programs in both, Economics and Finance. I haven't given it a ton of thought in the past but now I realize that my age could be a factor in the admissions process. I think that aside from that I have a pretty competitive profile: Ivy League Econ + CompSci minor with 3.5 overall and 3.7 Econ GPA; 163V/167Q/4.5AW GRE; top 15 MBA in Finance; top 3 MS in Math ( all A's after a bad first semester ); I have two solid LORs from a well known Finance prof who is a dept chair in a top 15 school and from my former advisor who is an econ prof with a strong reputation/recognition in his field, the third letter is from a former colleague who is Columbia PhD and worked as an economist at a top ibank and now a CIO at a small hedge fund. So, I think that aside from my age and making academia my second career, I probably have a decent shot at a top 10 program. However, the age factor gives my profile an extra "risk" parameter which not all schools will be willing to accept. I've addressed in my SoP how my experience could be beneficial to the schools I am applying to, as I have spent a number of years pondering some of the relevant questions in macroeconomics, monetary econ, and finance and that I know how to frame those questions and have developed plenty of ideas that i'd like to work on as a practitioner, which makes me more informed than a typical straight out of undergrad candidate. The issue that I am struggling with as to whether there are any other ways to mitigate the "Risk factor" since most programs dont interview candidates and I won't have that forum to address my profile's shortcomings. Would appreciate any feedback from anyone who has either been in my shoes before, has worked or studied with people who have gone to a PhD program later in life, or has been involved with adcoms that have looked at candidates similar to myself. or for that matter, anyone who can share an intelligent opinion or advice - would be highly appreciated! Thanks in advance to all !
  5. I have a general question about applying to PhD programs. I am in my third year as an applied math major and i'm planning to get a PhD. I've taken all the the minimum classes like Calc, Linear Algebra, etc. except for real analysis which i will be taking next year. My question is what other things can i do to signal my interest into getting into grad school. I have been trying to ask around for research but no one has really responded so maybe i'll my luck this quarter but what other things are a must for good signaling? Should i take real analysis and graduate econometrics in my 4th year? Would grad schools still take that into consideration considering they take the sophomore and junior year grades?
  6. Hello everyone! I would like to thank you all for taking a moment to help me. This is my first time on this site, so if a similar thread already exists please point me in the right direction. I have recently graduated from college, having double majored in Business/Finance and Accounting, and I currently work in a financial position. Although I believe my background is useful for an Economics Ph.D., I have not had much of an opportunity to take math courses while in undergrad. I do have Statistics and Calculus 1 & 2 on my college transcript but they were all taken during high school (5s on the AP exams). I believe that I am a strong math student that simply never took math courses in college because it was never required in an already full curriculum. With that said, going forward, I'd really like to explore opportunities in Ph.D. programs. It appears most, if not all, of the top programs require a mathematics background (Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, Econometrics and Differential Equations). Is it true that I should look towards taking these classes before applying to Ph.D. programs, or will there be a "grace period" to complete these math prerequisites once accepted into a program? In the event I should take the courses before applying, I have been considering enrolling part time at a nearby community college (since it is extremely affordable). Would the fact that I'm fulfilling these requirements at a community college have a negative impact on an application as opposed to spending more money on a school with higher brand equity? Thanks again for all of the responses and help. I am truly appreciative.
  7. Hi, Rings and fields and geometry happen to be the only two upper level math classes offered next semester and I have not taken them yet. Which one would you guys recommend to strengthen my profile for econ phd? Rings and fields doesn't require prior class of group theory (which I have never taken it) and I have no idea how much those two are related. I have taken the second semester of analysis and advanced stats already. Or shouldn't I take those but take python instead since I don't have any computer science background and it can be useful when dealing with huge data? preparephd
  8. Hi All, I am planning to apply for Fall 2015 PhD Eco; inclined towards programs in the US. I don't think I have credentials for top 30, and guess they are the better ones for macroeconomics related specialisation. It would be extremely helpful if you can advise, from your experience/knowledge, names good for macro/public eco related specialisation in rank 25-60 maybe. Appreciate each and every response. Lastly, my GRE quant score is 161, I don't have time to retake as I am currently working for an I-bank and spend considerable amount of time in office. :upset: So, in case someone feels 161 is a completely unacceptable score for a particular univ., please mention that name separately. Thanks!
  9. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad:Top 15 US Undergrad Undergrad GPA:3.88/4.00 Type of Grad:N/A Grad GPA:N/A GRE:170Q/157V/5AWA Math Courses:Calc III (A+), Intro to Intermediate Statistics(A), Matrix Algebra(A), Multivariable Calculus(A), Intro Higher Maths(A), now taking Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, Probability Theory. Econ Courses (grad-level):taking PhD first year core Microeconomic Theory (MWG) now Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Micro(A), Macro(A), Intro to Econometrics(A+), Labor Economics(A), Capital Market Imperfections(A), Game Theory(A-), some Other Courses:Business School classes such as Investments(A), Financial Accounting(A), Gateway to Development (from International Studies department) (A) Letters of Recommendation: 1.Thesis supervisor, also my professor for capital market class. though thesis is still on the way. He is director of undergrad studies, Harvard PhD, knows me pretty well. 2. a young AP of Game Theory class, though I get an A- in that class, I become good "friends" with the professor. He knows me very well, but probably will not say that I am the best of his students. He got his PhD from Princeton. Then will choose one from the two below: 3. Professor of the MWG class I am taking now. Still developing relationship. Trying to make an impression that I am an undergrad girl who has keen interest in studying economics. He is a PhD from MIT. 4.Maths professor, knows me well, taught Intro to Higher Maths and teaching Real Analysis now. Research Experience: I was on a University research grant to do research on honors thesis this past summer. Now working on the thesis itself. It's about development and access to credit market. Junior year : one year RA experience for a Political Science research team, I guess that does not count. Teaching Experience: TA for an accounting class for one semester. Research Interests: Development, Micro theory. SOP: should be okay. Concerns: Not enough RA experience, no working paper, maths background not strong enough, GRE V is low. Applying to: 6 PhD programs (MIT, Princeton, Yale, Chicago, Northwestern, Cornell) and a couple of master of mathematics Other: I am not sure if I will get into any of the six programs I applied. My major changed at the start of my junior year, so I only started preparing my maths background then. So my backup plan is to get a masters before I reapply next year. Or if I can get an RA position it would be a great option to take a gap too. Any suggestions on types of master programs that are great for boosting up profile for a phd applicant? Thank you!
