  1. Hello all, I am currently finishing a Research Analyst position at the IMF, and am considering getting a PhD and going into academia as an alternative to working in the public, private or non-profit sectors. I am very interested in researching comparative economics and economic history, and would love to teach in these subjects, or general economics as well. I love learning for the sake of learning, thinking about new ideas, and think that academia would be a good place for. However, I am unsure as to whether a PhD in economics, public policy or history would be the best fit for me. My biggest issue is math, where I am able to understand well the concepts, but when it comes to doing well in the classes themselves, I have struggled. I am a great writer, however, and had no problem acing economics, history and policy classes. I know that if I decide to do an Econ PhD,, I would need to retake Calc II and II, as well as take Linear and Real, at a minimum. Given my background, interest and qualifications, what kind of program would be best, and where does the forum think I can get into. My profile is posted below. Type of Undergrad: Double BA in Economics and International Relations - Top 40 LAC Undergrad GPA: 3.36, Econ: 3.6, IR: 3.6 GRE: 163 Q, 160 V, 5.5 W Math Courses: Calc I - III: B-, C+, C+ Stats (Undergrad and Grad): A- Econ Courses (Undergrad): Intro to Econ I/II: A-, A-, Intermediate Macro/Micro: B+/B+, Econometrics: A-, Econ Development: A-, International Trade: A-, Senior Seminar: B+ Grad School: Johns Hopkins University SAIS - MA in International Economics and Finance Grad GPA: 3.3 Econ Courses: Macro: A-, Micro: B+, Econometrics I/II: B-, B, Time Series Econometrics: B+, Economic Development: A-, Advanced International Macro: B+, International Finance: C+, International Trade: B+, International Financial Organizations: A- LORs: I feel pretty confident that they will be really good and will speak to my interest in research and teaching Research experience: Several internships during college at economic think tanks in DC, the Council of Economic Advisers, and an RAship for an undergrad IIPE professor. Currently an RA at the IMF Teaching experience: Undergrad Intermediate macro TA Research interests: Economic development, comparative economics, economic history
  2. Hey guys. I will be applying to PhD programs this year for the fall 2021 year. I will graduate with a economics major and math minor. Here's my profile: Undergrad: 3.65 GPA from large state school. Grad course: Grad level Public finance econ course and issues in american economic history which included a research paper. GRE: 166 Quant Research: Not really much to be honest. Multiple classes that involved research projects but no RA experience. LOR: I can get three that will be good from economic professors at my school. Two should be very good, but it isn't an incredible economics department so they won't be from the types of professors who teach at harvard obviously. econ courses: econometrics, intermediate micro and macro, labor, plus some others. all A's math courses: Calc 1-4, linear algebra, differential equations, and real analysis. A's in all except a B in real analysis. I know I am not going to Harvard or Yale or that type of school, but what type of schools do you think I could fit at. I will also apply to RA jobs so I could do that for a couple years and then go to PhD. Be honest with me. Thanks Edited to add that I have knowledge of stata. Primarily taught myself but also used some in classes.
  3. Not sure if this is the right place, but I'm currently a first year at a mid level PhD that does not offer a class on the topic. Im leaning towards a focus in macro theory, and curious about the topic of economic history, particularly macro models of the past 100 years. Does anyone know of a good History of Economic Thought textbook/ series of papers to read in my free time that might lead to an interesting perspective?
  4. I would like to know if the Economic History Field is still active and which schools have Ph.D. students with EH specialization. I have done my research, finding 5 schools who publicly show their economic history specialization option (sadly top 20) but I'm unaware if admissions are open for candidates who want to specialize in that field. The reasoning is based on the lack of graduates from those institutes with an economic history field. Before anyone criticizes me or directs me to apply to LSE Economic History Ph.D., my central interest/research is Macroeconomics but economic history is a very crucial subject to all Economic courses (even Econometric) and I desire to research in that field as well. I refuse to apply to an institution that does not even have an Economic History course as a requirement for Ph.D. completion. I would love to go into more (possibly rant) but I will appreciate any help and/or tips.
  5. Hello, I am hoping to get some input on what type of schools I could apply to. Test Scores (GMAT): 700 Undegrad GPA: 2.85 (1 really bad year, trended up after but alas... this was a long time ago). Graduate GPA: 3.7 MA, Economic Sociology (Top 20 school in Asia), 3.7 Msc in Business Research (Top 20 school in Europe) Research Experience: 2 publications (B+/A- level journals), 1 as first author Teaching Experience: N/A Work Experience: Several years consulting Concentration Applying to: Management, Organizational Theory / Economic Sociology Number of programs planned to apply to: 10? Dream Schools: No idea Other Questions: What made you want to pursue a PhD? I truly love doing research and being in an academic environment. Questions or concerns you have about your profile? Low u-grad GPA. Average GMAT. Any additional specific questions you may have: I am just really not sure what level I should target? I am open to anywhere in the world (North America, Asia, Europe)
  6. Hi there, I was wondering if some people could distinguish between several very similar sounding subfields within Economics? They are: - Economic policy - Public economics - Political economics - Public policy I've seen all of them used as areas of specialization for economists working in academia. The nuances I'm supposing are palpable and distinct, but I'm not quite positive.
