  1. My major is quantitative finance, but I am very interested in macroeconomics and econometrics. I plan to purse a PhD in economics. Because of lack of economics theory training, I think I should go to MA degree first. And I know that MA programs leading to PhD are very limited, and I may not have a good recommendation letter (this is a big drawback). I don't know whether my RA experience in a Asian central bank helps me or not. I list some of my courses for your reference: grades are good ECON: Introductory Microeconomics, Introductory Marcoeconomics, Game Theory, Intermediate Marcoeconomics MATH: Calculus and Advanced Calculus (3 courses), Linear Algebra (2 courses), Numerical analysis, Probability theory, Ordinary Differential Equations I haven't taken any pure analysis courses, such as Real Analysis, but I will take more math courses in the coming year. STAT: Statistical Inference and Probability (2 course), Stochastic Process, Applied Linear Regression, Time Series Does anyone help me analyze my situation and give me some advice on grad school selection? Thanks a lot.
  2. Hi everyone, Does anyone have recommendation about how international students (who are studying in the US) should prepare their well-rounded experiences (I'm not talking about doing research at their institutions) before applying for econ grad school? It's really hard to get an internship in the US as many internships require citizenship. I have been interning with government of my country (all major macroeconomic-oriented govt agencies) for two summers including this upcoming one and I really appreciate any thoughts/comments for my next summer in 2015.
  3. Hello All!! So I graduated from a small liberal arts school in the northeast about a year ago... 4. Hey guys, thanks for taking the time. Good luck to you all !! Type of Undergrad: Best South American – Economics B.A., some grad courses. Minor in Art History. Undergrad GPA: 3.6 Type of Grad:N/A Grad GPA:N/A GRE: Q: 167, V: 160, AW: 4.0 Math Courses: Multivariate Calculus (3 Courses)(A), Linear Algebra (A), Probability Theory (A), Mathematical Statistics (B), Real Analysis (B), Differential Equations (A), Variation Calculus (A). Econ Courses: Intro Micro/Macro (A, A), Intermediate Micro/Macro (A,A), Advanced Econometrics (B), Advanced Macro/Microeconometrics (B/C), International Trade (A), Advanced Microeconomics I ©, Advanced Microeconomics II (A), Advanced Microeconomics III (A), Advanced Macroeconomics (B), Development (A), Optimal Taxation Theory (A). Research Experience: RA for researcher in finance (Chicago PhD). BA thesis. Work Experience: 1 year intern at federal research department 1 year at finance firm (working for a bunch of PhD alumni) Letters of Recommendation: (Possible letters) 1 Junior Faculty (not a really strong letter, not so well connected) 1 Thesis Advisor, Senior Faculty (I don’t know how good his LOR could be) 2 Current job (Harvard and Stanford PhD alumni should be good, some connections at certain Universities) 1 PhD Chicago researcher (might be good) Research Interests: Macroeconomics, Macroeconometrics, Finance (secondary). SOP: Standard Comments: I suck at PR and I didn’t do as good as I should have at school, so it’s really likely that my academic LORs will be weak. Also, I’m willing to do M.A. programs to boost academic LORs and re-apply to PhD programs, hopefully having a better shot at high-rank PhD programs (Top 12). Applying to: Clueless, please make suggestions. Biggest concerns: Possible weak LORs GPA could be better.
  5. Hi, guys~ I really hope to work in the industry after my phd graduation. (Economic consultant, eg) What would be a good field(s) choice for my econ phd? I am struggling among the following: 1. Macro 2. IO (But in our department, the focus in IO seems to be theoretical) 3. Applied Micro Or any combinations of the above..... Can anyone offer me some advice?
  6. Hello All, I'm currently a senior undergraduate student at a top 50 university who plans on taking a year off to work before I apply to graduate school. I'm interested in first pursuing a masters program in economics ideally pursuing a PhD afterwards. I am not applying directly to a PhD program because I don't think I am competative enough as it stands. Having started as an International Affaris major I was late to start a math sequence and pushed through the courses in order to attain a BS in Economics from my institution. Now I'm uncertain if I could be competative enough for a non-terminal master program here in the U.S or the U.K. My undergraduate GPA is 3.3 as a dobule major in International Affairs and Economics. I've taken Calc I-III but performed at C level in them however am receiving an A in Linear Algebra half way into the semester. Practice GRE's are placing me consistently at a 168 Q and 163 V and this is with only about a couple weeks of studying. It looks like I will have 2 solid letters of recommendation from two economics professors at my university, one of whom is my thesis advisor who is fairly well known. I'm simply worried that my poor performance has hindered any opportunity of me getting into a solid masters program. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on where perhaps to apply? I'm also open to retaking calc II-III to bolster my application if need be.
  7. Hey everyone! I've been combing through these threads for a couple of weeks, but I would still like a little bit of guidance. I'll keep this short, hopefully. I'm a junior Economic and Mathematics double major at a fairly large private university in a big US city, with a decent reputation of its grad business and law schools, but not much beyond that, and there is a lack of substantial research in most areas. My economics advisor has expressed some concern over the reputation (or lack thereof) of my school making admission to a good PhD program difficult. So, I'm wondering if my course choices are alright considering my school. Relevant Courses taken: Honors "States, Markets and Society" (political economy course), Principles and Intermediate Micro, Principles Macro, Calc I-III with Scientific Applications, Mathematical Reasoning and Proofs Somewhat relevant?: Year of bio, two trimesters chemistry, two trimesters physics This term, I'll be taking: Real Analysis I, Multivariable Calculus I, Advanced Microeconomics (grad level) and an Honors Program Junior Requirement course. The rest of Junior Year: Real Analysis II, Multivariable Calculus II, Linear Algebra, [Grad] Research Methods for Policy Analysis I (closest thing to econometrics), Intro to Econometrics... and then Differential Equations or Game Theory or some other math course? I considered Mathematical Economics but apparently it's too low-level in terms of math. Senior year: Full year of 300-level Prob and Statistics, intermediate macro, hopefully [grad] Advanced Macro, and a bunch of other econ and math courses (suggestions, anyone?). Some of the courses that I mentioned as possibilities can definitely be taken senior year, but the question is whether it is better to take them junior year so they're on my apps to PhD programs? Also (what happened to keeping this short?), what else do I need? I'm going to RA for a young, top 5 PhD professor later this year. What kind of stuff should I aim for during the summer between junior and senior year? What about senior year? And I suppose I'll ask this now: Should I apply during my senior year to PhD programs, or wait a year or two while working at the Fed or in economic consulting, etc? I'm dead-set on an Econ PhD, so it's not an issue of 'getting a feel for the "real" world'. It's an issue of building my resume to compensate for the fact that I'm not coming from a well-ranked university (though I love it here), and a not-perfect GPA (darn pre-med sequences!). And I gotta say, though I've only been a creepy lurker, you guys and gals have impressed me with your intelligence, ambition and friendliness. I look forward to being more active here in the future. Thanks in advance for your help!
  8. may be a bit longer:) profile: pre-university in mainland China, attending a top3 university in Hong Kong, quantitative finance, junior year. currently a visiting student for 1 sem at a top 20 university in US, but they don't have a strong econ department. I was planning for i-banks but found out it was not for me.decided to go for a phd in economics... GPA: 3.69/4.0 (3.76 if excluding my 2 sucked B- math courses), on a first class track(the b school gives out first class for 3.5+) .my school has a strict curve dist. e.g. math department mean is B- or B, depends on the instructor. Math: cal 1,2,3(equivalent) in 2 courses: A- &A, linear algebra B-, ODE B- :(well i was skipping classes last sem because i was not intended for grad schools at that time and the instructor couldn't explain the materials clearly --plan to take real analysis, fin math and stochastic process before graduation. STA: probability theory A- and Stat inference B+ econ: principle, basic micro, both A taking intermediate micro and econometrics now, on A track, plan to take intermediate macro a bunch of FIN courses, A and A- You may see that my biggest concern now is my math grades. well, my ability is at least above average among Chinese students but the grades... now i regret not working hard last semester, how can I make up that? Taking real analysis is helpful? My interest is on labor and demographic economics (I'm also a big sociology fan), I don't think it's too math intensive...is that true? My school is very career oriented and senior professors don't involve too much with undergrads. They have a good econ department, quite reputable in Asia, Old professors are from universities like UIUC and Minnesota, recently recruited from mit, nw. Few students in econ had interest in grad school so not many applied for it. As far as I know, 1 undergrad went to cornell, the other BU, both did exchange at Penn. I can ask a reputable fin prof here in US to write LOR for me, econ prof.? I'm not sure but I'll try my best.Back to HK, I plan to find a prof. supervising my thesis. and also find some RA ship. Do you guys think i still have a chance to get into a top 30 program (this is a bottom line to find a professorship in my university now, I think at least I should be able to come back, otherwise it's not worthful)? I still have 1 year. how should i prepare besides math and senior thesis? or it's better for me to go to a master program first then apply? I found there were some 1-year MA programs in UBC and Toronto(that's the most i can afford), but i don't know if it will make a difference just lagging my application for 1 year. Thanks a lot in advance!
