  1. Please suggest some suitable universities for both MA in Economics and PhD in Economics. I’m an international student and I have applied to 6 universities this fall and got accepted to 5 of them in their MS/MA in Economics program. (UNC Charlotte, University of Maryland -Baltimore County, Georgia State University, Illinois State University, and Western Illinois University). However, I couldn’t secure any funding from any of them so I decided not to go. My GPA is not good, so please suggest some universities in accordance with my profile where I would have a chance to secure funding. Type of Undergrad: BA in Economics from an unreputed, unranked university in Bangladesh. Undergrad GPA: 3.04 (Last two years 3.13 and 3.20 respectively) GRE: GRE: 314 (Quant-160, Verbal-154, AWA- 4 ) IELTS: 8.5 (Listening 9, Reading 8.5, Writing 7.5, Speaking 8 ) Teaching Experience: Have a youtube channel where I teach Introductory Econometrics Research Experience: 1 publication that is work in progress (Almost finished) Work Experience: 9 months of field survey experience in a multinational market research company. Projects: Several data analysis projects in Python, SQL, Tableau, etc to showcase my skills. I've attached my courses and grades below. They are all over the place and I know I don't have a shot at any of the top schools. So if you could suggest some MA/PhD program in my league where I could have funding I would greatly appreiciate it.
  2. Type of Undergrad: BA in Economics from a south asian university which is top ranked in my country CGPA: 3.7/4, GRE: Q162 (770), V 151 (460), AW 4 TOEFL: iBT100 Coureses: Mathematics for Economists I & II (A+ & A), Differential and Difference Equations (A+), Real Analysis (A+) Statistical Methods I & II (A+ & A), 4 Econometrics course (A-, A+, A+, A+), Microeconomics (Principles A, intermediate B+ & A-, advanced A+ & A+), Macroeconomics (Principles A+, intermediate A+& A+, advanced A & A) Letters of Recommendation: From advanced level Microeconomics, Real Analysis and Economerics courses. All three have recognized US PhD but are not famous economists. They are likely to write good letters for me. My future goal is to get a PhD from the Big Four. For now, I am looking for a funded MA program in Canada. [*=1]Given my profile, please comment about my chances in a) McGill b) McMaster c) SFU d) York e) Alberta f) Calgary? [*=1]Can you name, for me, some safe schools? [*=1]Taking the GRE again and improving quant score will how much help for the mentioned school? THANK YOU!
  3. My major is quantitative finance, but I am very interested in macroeconomics and econometrics. I plan to purse a PhD in economics. Because of lack of economics theory training, I think I should go to MA degree first. And I know that MA programs leading to PhD are very limited, and I may not have a good recommendation letter (this is a big drawback). I don't know whether my RA experience in a Asian central bank helps me or not. I list some of my courses for your reference: grades are good ECON: Introductory Microeconomics, Introductory Marcoeconomics, Game Theory, Intermediate Marcoeconomics MATH: Calculus and Advanced Calculus (3 courses), Linear Algebra (2 courses), Numerical analysis, Probability theory, Ordinary Differential Equations I haven't taken any pure analysis courses, such as Real Analysis, but I will take more math courses in the coming year. STAT: Statistical Inference and Probability (2 course), Stochastic Process, Applied Linear Regression, Time Series Does anyone help me analyze my situation and give me some advice on grad school selection? Thanks a lot.
  4. My husband just got accepted! Does anyone have opinions - good or bad - about the program? Tips, recommendations? Any other students starting this May?
  5. Hi everyone, I am recently considering a master degree in economics. CUNY looks like a good choice but i got a bit confused by its system. Hunters and City college of CUNY both offer this kind of program and I was wondering is there anyone familiar with these programs and can tell they differences/ emphasize? I am pretty much interested into health economics especially concerning on medical insurance system. I did see some professors' profiles of hunters, plenty of them are studying this subject but i heard city college has a better reputation. And also any other recommendations of economics MA in NYC?
  6. I'm goin to graduate with a major in Economics (BA) from the Unversity of Mumbai sometime this July. I'm planning on applying to the University of Nottingham and Warwick, mainly because they offer 1 year Masters in Behavioral economics which seems really interesting. I have one question peratining to this : is it a good idea to get into these 1 year programs? Consider this : 1) Most reputed Ph.D programs have Late Dec-Early January deadlines for 2013 Fall entry. 2) I'll graduate from the UK in July the following year (2013). 3) In the 3 months that I'll be in the UK till December this year (deadline for Fall '13), is it possible to make such an impact on the advisor or professor such that I'll get an awesome letter of recommendation? This is especially crucial to me since Simon Gachter is at Nottingham and a good LOR from him will ideally see me through into Harvard or Duke or Chicago. If that's not possible, should I go for it anyway even though I'll waste a whole year before I can begin my Ph.D in Fall 2014? This question is really bothering me and I'd totally love some assistance on this. Thanks. And if I'm wrong or mistaken anywhere feel free to correct me.
  7. Hello All, I'm currently a senior undergraduate student at a top 50 university who plans on taking a year off to work before I apply to graduate school. I'm interested in first pursuing a masters program in economics ideally pursuing a PhD afterwards. I am not applying directly to a PhD program because I don't think I am competative enough as it stands. Having started as an International Affaris major I was late to start a math sequence and pushed through the courses in order to attain a BS in Economics from my institution. Now I'm uncertain if I could be competative enough for a non-terminal master program here in the U.S or the U.K. My undergraduate GPA is 3.3 as a dobule major in International Affairs and Economics. I've taken Calc I-III but performed at C level in them however am receiving an A in Linear Algebra half way into the semester. Practice GRE's are placing me consistently at a 168 Q and 163 V and this is with only about a couple weeks of studying. It looks like I will have 2 solid letters of recommendation from two economics professors at my university, one of whom is my thesis advisor who is fairly well known. I'm simply worried that my poor performance has hindered any opportunity of me getting into a solid masters program. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on where perhaps to apply? I'm also open to retaking calc II-III to bolster my application if need be.
