  1. Hello I'm a 3rd year Business Administration (specialization in Finance) bachelor student from a top University in Netherlands. I am planning to attend a Masters degree in Economics that would be a stepping stone to a good Phd in Economics. My GPA right now is 8.98/10 in dutch scale which will translate to 4.0 in US scale (at least that's what I found in my uni website) The relevant courses I took are (*- All letter grades are taken form my unis approximate transfer matrix from Dutch to US grades) Economics/Econometrics (42 EC) - Intro to Econ 1 9/10 ~ A+* (6 EC) - Intro to Econ 2 7.5/10 ~ A (6 EC) - Intermediate Econ 9/10 ~ A+ (6 EC) - Behavioral Econ 8.5/10 ~ A+ (6 EC) - Social and Econ Policies - TBD (6 EC) - Economic Methodology - TBD (6 EC) - Applied Econometrics - TBD (6 EC) Maths/Quantitative methods (18 EC) - Statistics and probability 1 9.5/10 ~ A+ (6 EC) - Statistics and probability 2 9.5/10 ~ A+ (6 EC) - Quant research methods 7.5/10 ~ A (6 EC) - Linear Optimization models - TBD (6 EC) Plus additionally 42 ECs in Finance At this moment Cemfi, RoME and Bocconi grabbed my attention, what are the chances to get in / get scholarships. What other masters should I consider applying to if my goal is to get into top Phd in Europe or US? I know that I most likely cannot apply to top programs in UK as they require Econ degree and specify that Business Administration will not be enough. I appreciate any response! Thank you in advance
  2. Hey guys! I'm deciding between UC3M and a few other schools to do my master in Economics beginning this fall. I have read things about the program at UC3M on this forum (high attition rate, low funding etc.). Given that the posts being referred to are quite outdated, can someone in the program please comment on whether these things still holds. Also any other general information about your experience with the program is high appericiated! Thanks.
  3. Hi all, I am interested in the field of Development economics and macroeconomics and want to pursue a Ph.D. post, my masters. I have received admission offers from the following universities for fall 2018. 1. Boston University (MA Economics, 1 year) - $57,000 (tuition) 2. University of Minnesota (MS Applied economics, 2 years) - $50,000 (tuition) 3. UT Austin (MA Economics, 1 year) - $21,750 (tuition after scholarship) 4. Vanderbilt University (MA Economics, 16-24 months) - nearly $30,000 (tuition after scholarship) Kindly advice me on which university should I opt for masters. I want to know about the following - 1. How are the job placements post masters, i.e., what is the average salary? 2. How easy/difficult it is to go from the master's programs of the above universities to their Ph.D. program? 3. How are the Ph.D. placements of the above universities - where do students go? Thanks!

RealAnalysis, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations) Non-stellar grades Not sure if I fit well into traditional economicsprograms given that my research interests more closely aligns with quantintensive courses. Personal preference for schools in the Europe. Funding is a major concern. Please help me with the range of schools and apreferably give me a potential list of grad schools that I should be targeting.Appreciate any advice Thanks!
  6. Hi guys, Could anybody provide me with some feedback/info about RoME master in Economics? It seems a pretty decent programme to prepare for research in Economics but I would still like to gather some info about acceptance rates, if it's worth it, etc. Link: RoME - An EIEF-LUISS master's degree program - Institutions Thanks.
  7. Type of Undergrad: Unknown U.S. University Major: B.A. Economics, Political Science, and Minor in Mathematics GPA: Cumulative 3.91, Econ 3.968, Relevant honors: Graduated Summa cum laude with honors Undergrad Thesis: Comparative analysis of development of China and India (It is a qualitative analysis and tbh of a very inferior quality, still got an A) GRE: Should be able to get >165 on the quant Math Classes: Elementary Calculus I and II, Discrete Mathematics (A-), Mathematical modelling (A-), Linear Algebra (A), Advanced Calculus (A) Econ Classes: Intermediate Micro (A), Intermediate Macro (A), Econometrics (A), Intro to Corporate Finance (A), American Economic History (A), Macroeconomic Policy (A), Money, Credit and Banking (A), Financial Markets (A), Stats for Business and Economics (A) Recommendations: I should get a VERY VERY strong recommendation from both of my Economics professors (one of them is the chair of Econ department as well as my thesis advisor). I am also planning to get a recommendation from one of my Political Science professor who without doubt will have excellent recommendation for me. Teaching Experience: Worked as a tutor at the college's tutoring center and taught Mathematics. Concerns: Lack of high level Mathematics courses, Graduated from an unknown University, University economics department is pretty heterodox. Thank you guys in advance. I am a pessimist on most of the part. So, I have no idea what to expect or what to aim for while applying to Grad Schools. Any advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks. P.S. I am new to here. So, I copied the format from one of the posts. Sorry for that.
  8. As the title suggests, I am interested in finding out how difficult the EME program is at LSE. I have done my research and used the search function to look for past discussions on this topic. While there are posters who say that the EME is so tough that about a third of the class fail their finals, they don't quite go into the details of why the course is so difficult. I would really appreciate it if you all could weigh in and let me know what you think about the following questions. What is the math background of the average student in the 1 year long EME program? This information would be helpful for me because it could help me get an idea of the types of students I will be competing with. Do I have sufficient math experience to do well in the program? I want to make sure that I am not entering a program that uses concepts from advanced classes that I have not taken such as Real Analysis, Measure Theory, Topology etc. I have taken ODE, PDE, Lin Algebra, Probability Theory, Stochastic Processes, Numerical Analysis, Number Theory and Calc I-III. In addition, I have taken Econometrics and Advanced Econometrics and have been exposed to using linear algebra to derive the OLS estimators, etc. I received As in all the classes mentioned except Calc III and Number Theory (Got B+s in them). I was taking a look at the classes that students in the 2 year version of the EME take in their preliminary year. The first year of the 2 year long EME is meant to equip students without a strong math/econ background with the required knowledge for the actual year of the EME program. I thought it would be helpful to look at the classes that LSE prescribes in the 1st year because it could reveal what LSE believes to be essential knowledge for successful completion of the core EME courses in the 2nd year. The website states that 1st year students can take Probability, Distribution Theory & inference, Further Mathematical Methods, Microeconomics, Microeconomic principles II, and Economic Theory and its applications. These classes look like the standard Linear Algebra, Calc I-III, ODE, economic theory and econometrics sequence that a Mathematical Economics student in the US would take in their sophomore or junior year. They don't seem to cover upper level topics such as RA, Abstract Algebra, Topology, Math Stats, and Measure Theory. Since these first year classes are meant to equip students with the necessary mathematical and economic tools for the core EME classes, can I assume that the EME core courses do not, in fact, require exposure to upper level proof based classes such as RA and Measure Theory? If the LSE only equips its 1st year EME students with what many URCHers would consider basic level math knowledge in the first year, why are there so many posts here stating that the EME course is the toughest thing out there. It must either be the case that the classes that LSE puts its 1st year students through is not adequate preparation for the core EME courses and that the 1st years who move on to the 2nd year are all of a sudden expected to understand proofs and concepts that they have never been exposed to, or that the 1st year courses are adequate and that the people who have posted here did not have good exposure to Linear Algebra, Calculus, etc. I find it hard to believe that the latter is the case so maybe LSE does in fact under prepare its 1st year students. What are your thoughts on this? If the EME does use upper level math concepts in their classes, how are these concepts used? Are they presented in a hand-wavy fashion such that students only need to understand the concepts from a high level without getting down and dirty with the proofs, or are students actually expected to produce rigorous proofs akin to the proofs one might write in a RA class? Thank you in advance to everyone who can help me with this. I look forward to hearing from you.
  9. Hi, I studied electrical engineering and currently working as an engineer. I am based in Singapore. Wondering how can I prepare myself to be admitted into top economics graduate school?
  10. Hi everybody, two days ago I received an offer of admission to the MSc in Economics at Wisconsin Madison. I have initially applied for directly entering their PhD program, but my application was rejected at the beginning of last March. Now such an admission is unfunded and tuition fees are pretty high and discouraging, however I would like to clear some doubts about how the graduate program in Economics at UWM works before definitely declining their offer. 1) First of all, take into account that my first intention is to pursue a PhD in Economics. So, does anybody know if, once earned their MSc, a MSc graduate at UWM can apply for their PhD and be exempted from attending courses of the doctorate's first year/two years (which basically mean pure coursework)? Spending other two years after the MSc studying more or less the same stuff is something I would definitely avoid and a negative response to such a question would lead me to automatically turn this MSc admission offer down. 2) I have a great interest in Development Economics, Growth and Income Inequalities. Any opinion about how UWM Economics faculty performs in such fields? To be honest, UWM is not my only option. In fact, I have already been accepted into the Master in Economic Analysis at Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (part of Barcelona GSE), which represents the first two years of the PhD program offered by them. So, actually I already have an alternative which lets me easily achieve a PhD in Economics without wasting precious years and I was perfectly fine with this...before receiving the email from UWM. In the end, what would you suggest between these two universities? I'm aware UWM is ranked highly and has got also a big name, but rankings say Barcelona GSE is not so distant from it...or am I wrong? Thank you in advance for your support.
  11. Hi all, I was hoping you could help me evaluate my profile for admissions to economics masters programs and perhaps provide me some sense of where I might be a competitive applicant. Type of Undergrad: a very highly regarded liberal arts college. Undergrad GPA: 3.9 overall, 3.9 economics (phi beta kappa, with honors, and some departmental awards) GRE: 165Q, 167V Math: Almost none. One semester of calculus (A) and a couple of stats classes. I'm a classic case of one's level of mathematical sophistication being greater than what is reflected on one's transcript. For the most part, my weak math background is why I'm considering a masters (in addition to taking more advanced economics courses)--hopefully en route to a doctorate. Econ: Intermediate Micro (A), Intermediate Macro (A), Intro Econometrics (A), Corporate Finance(A--was considered an econ course at my school and was taught by an econ professor), Seminar in Monetary Economics (A), Seminar in Law and Economics (A). Note: our "seminars" were the most advanced courses in the curriculum (basically they were research-oriented courses and each required a thesis-esque kind of project). Letters of Recommendation: Undergrad profs (1 Harvard). Should be OK. Teaching Experience: Tutored intermediate micro and macro for a 2 semesters each, also TA'd an intro course. Research Experience: None, except that the two seminar courses were VERY research intensive and resulted to two papers that, if nothing else, could make for what I think would be pretty solid writing samples. Other: Instead of doing research and taking math classes in the summers, I was very career-focused in undergrad. I did 4 internships (1 in politics, 1 at a microfinance nonprofit, 1 at the U.S. government's export credit agency in DC, and 1 in M&A investment banking). I currently am a third-year analyst in investment banking doing mergers & acquisitions, divestitures, etc. I've learned a lot from these experiences, but I've always had a gut feeling I belonged in academe and I'm finally ready to make a move. Research Interests: Industrial organization (specifically, in relation to business combinations and firm value). Note: I can go anywhere in the U.S., and, thanks to a couple of years in IB, financing isn't my most pressing problem (my lack of math is!), so I'm least concerned with those questions and more concerned with where I can go in order to improve my math profile with the goal of applying to phd programs thereafter. Note 2: while I've considered just taking math classes part-time for a few more years instead of a masters, it's pretty much impossible with my job. 90-100 hour work weeks are not uncommon at all, and I'm ready to commit full-time to school. Any suggestions? Thanks so much everyone!
