Which kind of certifications will be considered by admissions committee ( any course certification from US univs?) Can someone specify some certification courses covering the above topics which can compensate for the lacking in maths/econ courses? I do know I like research , but till now most people have suggested me to go for a Masters rather than a Phd. is there any hope for me to get into a PhD econ program with this profile? Kindly suggest some schools I can apply to for both Phd & Masters in econ/ Financial economics where I might have a chance! Any suggestions are welcome! Would really like to gain some insights. Thank You!

Hi all, I am looking for profile evaluation it. Any advice/feedback would be highly appreciated. Type of Undergrad: B.A. (Hons.) Grad GPA: 4 GRE: Q156 ,V 154, AWA 3.5 Math Courses Undergrad: Linear Algebra(A), Calculus(A),Discrete Maths (A) Econ Courses Undergrad: Microeconomics(B+), Macroeconomics(B+), Mathematical Methods in Economics(A), Statistical Methods in Economics(A), Development Theory and Experience(B+), Money and Financial Markets(A), International Economics(A) Econ Courses Grad :Advanced Microeconomics(A), Econometric Theory(A), Time Series Econometrics(A), Applied Econometric Methods(A), Panel Data and Non-parametric Econometrics(A), Econometric Applications(A) PhD level courses :Microeconomics(B-), Statistics(B). Letters of Recommendation: Associate Professor(in Marketing) who I RAed for 2 years(has U.S PhD) Assistant Professor from under grad Associate Professor from Grad Research Experience: Two years RA at a top business school working on projects related to Marketing and Development economics. Teaching Experience: Teaching instructor for Statistics workshop for MBA students(conducted over two days) Research Interests: Econometrics, Development economics Concerns : Lack of publications Poor GRE scores My work experience is under a Marketing prof. Fewer math courses Not so reputed letter writers(2) and not so reputed Grad college Notes: My colleagues(RAs) from the business school, where I RAed got offers from State University of New York, Auburn University, University of Connecticut, Rice University, University of California, George Washington University to study Econ(RAs here usually aim to pursue PhD). Students from my college went on to pursue Grad from U.K and the U.S and none from my Grad college are pursuing PhD. Since GRE is waived off/ optional for most of the programs, I plan to omit it from my applications. Does it harm a lot? Should I retake GRE to make my application more viable? Will applying for Economics program after RAing with Marketing Prof. adversely affect my applications? Depending on my current profile, what sort of schools should I target? What ranking range should I consider? Is my profile even worth applying? Thank you for your time :)

Hi All, I recently graduated with a BSc in economics degrees and have been applying to Master programs for the terms 20/21. As of now I hold offers from UCL and BGSE (BGSE incl. 50% tuition waiver and havent heart back of LSE as of now), however, I am very unsure which program I should choose. I initially had a preference for the UCL programm for the following reasons: I am more interested in Micro-/Labour-economics and BGSE seems to be better for Macroeconomics. I also heard that the quality of the courses at UCL is supposedly better than at the GSE and that it seems to be easier to graduate with distinction from UCL because the cohorts are more consistent. Regarding reputation, both programs seem to be more or less equally well regarded, however, I heard/read everything from UCL >> BGSE to BGSE >>> UCL. Most of these issues are of course very subjective so I am happy to hear your thoughts! I now received the offer from BGSE with a 50% tuition waiver (making it approx. 60% cheaper than UCL) and I am now wondering whether going to UCL for the reasons above outweights the difference in tuition fees. I am planning on going on to a "good" PhD program afterwards and potentially staying in academia so scoring well in the masters and also obtaining a degree of a well-regarded university seems to be quite important. So is UCL better than BGSE or is BGSE the better choice? Thank you a lot for taking the time to read through my question! Any recommendations or opinions would be much appreciated! Quick facts on my profile (since helpful for reference for future info seekers): * Graduated with an equivalent of a first class degree (Top 5%) from a "Top 3 University" in Germany (according to rankings at least). * GRE - Quant 165 * Worked as a RA and did a few internships at banks, insurances, economic consulting firms etc. (in hinsight found that to be helpful for master applications)

Hi all, I'd really appreciate it if you could help evaluate my profile for a PhD in Economics. I am aiming for the top 15, and I have been worrying about aiming too high. Undergrad institute: UCLA, but non-US citizen Undergraduate Majors: Financial Actuarial Math, with a minor in French Undergraduate GPA: 3.80 overall, 3.73 major GRE: V161 Q170 AW 4.0 (worried about AW, retaking it in a week) Quant course works: 2 Multivariable calculus classes(A and B) , 2 linear algebra classes (A+ and A), differential equation(A-), real analysis (A-), 2 probability theory classes(A- and B+), loss models(statitsics-heavy) (A and A+), Intro to statistics (A) Econ classes: 2 Microeconomics classes (A+ and A), Macroeconomics(A-), Econometrics(A+), Economic Forecasting (A-) Other certifications: passed 4 SOA actuarial exams. I'm hoping that they will tell my quant abilities. Not sure whether they could compensate for my B and B+ in math. Research Experience: 2 researches in econ department, one in exchange rate and another in financial market (about 6 months each). Paper on exchange rate ready for submission. Relevant internship experience: actuarial internship with California Department of Insurance (mostly statistics and finance) LOR: research advisor (who also taught my econometrics and economic forecasting classes), faculty advisor for internship(who is my statistics professor), and a math professor with whom I took two math classes related to statistical modeling. Another professor in Econ and my internship lead this summer (who works in the government agent) are also willing to submit LOR. Current school list: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, UPenn, CalTech, UChicago, Stanford, Duke, Brown, UCB, Cornell, Northwestern, JHU Any feedback will be appreciated. What are my chances of getting into these schools? Any program recommendations?

Hi I live in DC currently working as an RA at the IMF. Hoping to apply for phd econ next fall. Im not sure what type of schools to apply to in order to give myself a realistic chance. My gre quant is not bad (95 percentile). I have one master's in econ from johns hopkins (3.78 gpa) and another from my home country. I have courses in mathematical econ, adv mathematical econ and several in econometrics, from both my masters. I dont have real analysis and wondering whether I should enroll in an online course. What really worries me is that my undergrad was in business so I'm definitely behind the econ/math double major applicant so I dont really expect to get into a top 15 ranked school. Any advice what sort of schools I should look into ? Thanks.

I'm currently started freaking out about my plans for next year! I have a sense that I'm a relatively strong candidate, but I'm really not sure where I fit in terms of schools that might accept me. Is top 10 too high? Maybe I should aim more for the 10-20 range? Lower? Also I have this crazy plan about getting a masters in Europe and trying again. I'd love to get some feedback on whether or not that makes sense! PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: T 40 Public - Big state school. Undergrad GPA: 3.98/4.0 Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: V170/Q167/5 Math Courses: Hon Calc 2-4, HOn Linear Algebra I & II, Hon Modern Algebra, Hon Intro ODEs, Intro Prob & Stats, Probability Theory I (hon) & II, Numerical Analysis, Real Analysis (Hon intro and graduate level), Hon Intro Complex Analysis Econ Courses (grad-level): 1st year Micro sequence, Game Theory, Growth - next semester IO, Network Games Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intro Micro, Intro Macro, Micro Theory, Macro Theory, Poverty and Wealth, Econometrics I, Game Theory, plus Advanced Econometrics and Development Economics (B+) at LSE. (all As or A+s except for the one B+) Other Courses: Computer Science BA, French minor Letters of Recommendation: 1) My Prof for game theory and the graduate micro sequence 2) Prof that I took honors intro micro with, was his TA for two semesters. Close relationship. 3) Prof who I took micro theory, poverty and wealth, and grad growth with, current adviser for honors thesis. Research Experience: Honors thesis on measuring poverty with Engel curves, work on empirical pricing dynamics with informatics prof (game theory+machine learning+some information theory.) Nothing concrete but enough to talk about. Teaching Experience: Three semesters of Micro Theory, one of intro macro, one of Data Structures (CS) Research Interests: Game theory, behavioral models, dynamics and disequilibrium. Maybe IO? SOP: Standard. I found a couple of people at each school whose work I'm interested in, so I'll tailor towards each program. Broadly interested in applications to development. Will try to work in research and extracurriculars. Concerns: I come from a less prestigious university/program. No solid research. Other: I founded an Economics club at my university and helped start a social impact fund. I am also a peer adviser for the office of financial literacy. Are these things that I should play up or is coursework/ research the main thing? I'm also interested in the impact of doing a masters at PSE or the Tripos vs. going straight into a (possibly lower than my target) PhD? Is it worth it to do the masters and then reapply (assuming that I'll really enjoy both?) Applying to: APE/ETE Masters at Paris School of Economics, Cambridge Tripos, MIT, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Northwestern, Brown A couple of my friends (who I compare pretty evenly with) have gone to or been admitted to the Tripos, so I feel like that's pretty safe. PSE also has a reasonably high acceptance rate. My current plan is to see if I get into any of my "reach" PhDs, and if not, do a masters and reapply. I've received mixed opinions about whether this is a good idea. I'd really appreciate your thoughts! Thanks!

Hello everyone, I would like to apply for PhD in economics for fall 2015, but my profile is a bit non standard. I spent 2 years at a small unknown public school and just transferred to a top 30 private research uni with a top 10 econ PhD program. I'm a junior now but with summer classes I will be a senior in the fall. My stats: GPA n\a just transferred, previous GPA: 3.914 (4.0 in math, 3.9 in econ) GRES: haven't taken Econ courses: intro to micro and macro, econometrics, fin econometrics, labor economics, intermediate macro, currently taking advanced macro and a graduate seminar in international economics (both at the new uni); registered for a PhD level macro course in fall Math courses: at the previous school: calc 1 and 2, graph theory, math analysis (w), currently taking calc 3 and computer simulation at the new school, registered for prob and Lin algebra in summer, analysis 1 in fall Research experience: previous school: summer research grant with an unknown mentor, currently 2 applications pending with one very well published prof and one with less known; registered for an honors research course in economics in the fall My main concern is that I won't have analysis course completed when I apply in the fall, or won't have many credits to show from my new school. Please tell me if I have any chance at all this year!
