  1. Hi everyone, I am currently in the first year of an operations management PhD program (I joined Fall 2024). I was a pre-doc in Economics for two years before that and working on a paper with the pre-doc professor. I want to transfer to an econ PhD program, I have recommendation letters from three econ professors. Currently, I am doing core math courses. If anyone can advise me on how to write in the SOP to justify my decision, I am planning to apply again for Fall 2025 for PhD economics.
  2. GRE:TBD usnews top80 university in USA (usnews top30 grad program), public International application interested field: Applied Micro, Development economics. I am interested in everything from micro and empirical, and have I ever been exposed to theoretical research, so it is difficult to make a final conclusion. Master in applied statistic (IUG) GPA:3.83/4 Bs in econ and Bs in math GPA:3.72/4 math in major 3.67 econ in major 3.73 research: REU RA for a development econ assistant professor in my university -- basic data analysis and programming tasks -- going on -- 1 year RA for a statistic full Professor (College Graduate Education Associate Dean) at my university -- replication and expansion code, independent analysis data task -- going on -- 3 month Letter: two strong from the RA professor for sure, one pending Extracurricular and other activities: Working as a tutor coordinator in the economics club The academic training program of Economics depart will hold monthly seminars with different professors Statistics Consulting Training Camp Language: R, Latex, STATA, SAS, MATLAB, Python, ArcGIS, Git.... award: Dean's list, almost every semester My weakness: 1. During my sophomore year, I chose courses that were very hard for me, resulting in 7 late drops and 6 of them in my sophomore year. (I enrolled in the courses credits celling every semester!) 2. I have been trying the econometrics of the Honor version and web courses consecutively, so I did LD twice and only got a B in the end. Therefore, I have also taken many statistics courses to prove my abilities. 3. I got C+ in Intro Mathematical Analysis 1. B in intermediate economics. B in Intermediate Macroeconomic Analysis (Honors). 4. I don't have too much research experience. 5. International students face fierce competition. 6. No master thesis but have a writing sample supervised by my latter writer. 3. I'm attending an economics PhD program in the fall and want to hit the ground running. The department has recommended I complete this online review course in preparation for math camp this September. However, I'm not sure if there's anything else I should be doing to set myself up for success. Any advise or wisdom is welcome, however, I was wondering Should I connect with faculty before I arrive on campus? How do incoming graduate students prepare in the month leading up to math camp? Are there any general resources/books that graduate students have found particularly helpful during their first year? Thanks in advance!
  4. Do you think statistics is helpful/important if i want to go to a phd in econ?
  5. For those who want to go to a PHD in economics, is it better to continue to choose IUG(Integrated Undergraduate-Graduate Study) or go to a higher ranking master's program? currently top 50 public and top30 Econ department undergraduate
  6. Hi all. Need some advice on where I might be the best fit for a masters program to prepare for a PhD. I am American-Canadian and have spent a year out of undergrad on a prestigious area studies work fellowship abroad but I'm realizing that I want to take a different direction. I love economics, especially as it relates to development and international macroeconomics, and would like to use my brain a helluva lot more and have autonomy instead of going into development project management as my current path would be headed. Problem is in undergrad I had exactly the opposite intentions: I focused mostly on leadership and work experience. So I'll need to work hard to compensate for avg grades and develop strong math and research skills to demonstrate my seriousness and preparation. Please take a look at my schools and let me know if they're a good match for my interests/needs and if I'm competitive. Undergrad school: Top 5 public institution in USA, top 20 econ dept Undergrad GPA: Business Economics Major: 3.6/4.0 Cum: 3.4/4.0 GRE: 163Q - 167V (will be retaking until I boost my Q to >167) Math Courses: Calculus of Several Variables (C+), 5 score on AP Calc AB and BC tests Econ Courses:Statistics for Economists (A), Microeconomic Theory (A+), Macroeconomic Theory (A+), Intro to Econometrics (B+), Intro to Game Theory(A+), Industrial Organization Theory (B+), Theories of Economic Development (A-), Environmental Econ (B)Research Experience: Current events research with an Area Studies dept of my school (so pretty much n/a) Teaching Experience: n/a Research Interests: Development, macro, public Terminal masters applying to: Columbia, Duke, Simon Frasier, University College of London, UT Austin, University of Wisconsin, University of Ottowa, Warwick
  7. I just finished taking the GRE. My score is as follows: Q-168 V-163 A- Pending Total: 331 Should I be re-taking the GRE, aiming for at least 335 and a perfect score in quant. Or would the difference not affect my chances significantly? Is there any cohort (Top10, Top20, Top 30 so on) of grad schools where I am now more likely to be rejected or would these scores not much more difference on my admissions than a score upwards of 335? (I'm an international applicant). Any advice on whether retaking and attaining higher scores would improve my chances or not shall be appreciated very much.
