BC has strong empirical faculty but its accounting PhD program is relatively new. Minnesota has strong faculty in analytical and its empirical strength has improved a lot. How to choose between these three programs? Any comments will be much appreciated!

My prior thread I was considering Masters programmes, however, this is contingent upon obtaining funding via loans. In case this doesn't turn out well, I have been thinking about applying to pre-doc and RA positions. Although these positions seem to vary quite substantially, a common theme seems to be that they are looking for good empirical skills and programming skills. I don't know how I compare with other students in terms of these skills and so I wanted to know if there was a list of resources (or equivalent) for me to look through to prepare/refresh for these positions.

Out of curiosity, to the current grad students here, how useful is the first year metrics sequence to doing empirical research? I've heard that PhD metrics is pretty theoretical, and I was wondering if that hindered people from using it in empirical work.

Hi all, I have a list of around 20 solid programs across economics, b-schools, and pub. pol. I am torn about adding some more econ programs in the latter part of the T20 range. I am interested in empirical work in applied micro, be it in health, labor, public, environmental, PE, IO, or development. Fit-wise, the less structural the better. I'm trying to gauge reputations/faculty-quality in this arena for: UCLA UCSD Wisconsin Minnesota Michigan E.g. I heard that Minnesota is great for structural macro -- the farthest away from my cup of tea. What's its reputation in applied micro? Thanks!!
