  1. Hi all, Would truly appreciate your help, advice and suggestions on my profile. I am an media professional and an arts manager from India with over 12 years of experience. Just completed my Masters in Arts Management in Boston and now want to specialize in entrepreneurship within the creative and cultural industries. Hence considering a Phd. I was told to look at a Business or an Education Phd. Within business, I am veering more towards Organizational Behaviour. My research areas would broadly fall under workforce development, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship with an interdisciplinary focus on education. Here are my questions: - Have you heard of any place that could potentially support entrepreneurship research within the cultural industries? I know UK/Europe are big on this but would prefer the US approach. - Is Organizational Behavior the best fit for my interests or should I abandon the idea of the business Phd? Focus instead on education? - Any advice on what approach I should take since I don't have a strong math/accounting background? - Any school / department / professor recommendations? Here is what my profile looks like now: Undergrad GPA: First Class Post Grad Diploma in Journalism: A Grade Post Grad Diploma in Arts Management: A Grade Masters in Arts Administration: 3.71/4 (Also received the Excellence Award in Graduate Studies) TOEFL: 104/120 GRE: Yet to take Past Research: Qualitative research in India on Pedagogical Systems for artisans, Two papers in Boston University - None Published yet. Quant, Statistical Experience - None, also fairly mortified of math in general Fellowships: Fulbright, Net Impact Awards: in Journalism Letters of Recommendation: Should be able to get it from my professors at BU including those in the Business and Entrepreneurship class. Research Interests: Innovation, Creativity, Entrepreneurship, Cultural Industries and 21st Century Skills / Workforce Development Teaching Experience: None Work Experience: 12-14 years across media, social entrepreneurship and arts management. Now, fundraising in the social impact, non-profit space. Any advice would be great at this point. Thanks all for your time! Best, P
  2. Hello, I am an early stage entrepreneur looking to do a Ph.D. in entrepreneurship especially about market entry strategies. Could anyone please advise the possible options for me. I have a GRE score of 326. Thanks
  3. Hi everyone, I am considering applying to Phd in Entrepreneurship, and hope to get help from here to recommend what kind schools should I apply to and if I should take another master degree in the US. Actually I have been viewing related threads here for like a month now and still can't evaluate my chance to get in a Phd program. Here is my profile. Test Scores: GMAT:660,49 in quant, and 31 in verbal (took 4 years ago). Undegrad GPA: First class degree, 76/100, top 2, University of Portsmouth, UK Graduate GPA: Merit degree, 66/100, Warwick Business School, UK Research Experience: only dissertations Teaching Experience: None Work Experience: Cofounded two companies. one was unregistered but made money, one was registered but failed in a year. KPMG as Outbound M&A Tax Consultant Concentration Applying to: Entrepreneurship, specilized in informal economy, failure and strategy. Number of programs planned to apply to: 15-20 Dream Schools: OKState, Auburn, UNC Charlotte, UTSA, University of Oregon, Washington state university, Syracuse University, University of Colorado—Boulder, University of Houston.
  4. Hello World, Request evaluation of my profile, career goal and fitment into PHD programs in management. Profile (I am from India): 2002-06: BTech in Electronics and Communication from National Institute of Technology (Consistently among the top 20 institutes in India). Average scores. 2006-09: Software developer for a billing product 2009-11: MBA from Indian Institute of Management (Among the top 6). Average CGPA (2.85 out of 4.33) 2011-14: Product Manager for Digital Channels (Among the 3 largest private sector banks in India) GMAT: 690 Career Goal: In the long run I want to work on my own business initiatives (Preferably technology solutions for the underdeveloped sections of the society). I would like to do a PHD in technology strategy/entrepreneurship/both. Since I am not highly enthusiastic about a career in academics, I would like to keep my options open towards consulting/starting up. I believe that interacting with fellow students and MBA students interested in entrepreneurship would be a great exposure for me. Post that, the long term goal is to return to India and work on technological solutions that empower the bottom of the pyramid. Request an honest evaluation of my profile and my chances of getting into any of the following universities (or any other phd program that focuses specifically on technology/entrepreneurship). Wharton Harvard Stanford Stern Kellogg Sloan Booth INSEAD Ross McCombs Robert H. Smith Marshall Looking forward to the feedback. Thanks in advance.
  5. I've participated occasionally on these boards under various names since my PhD days, and I am now on the faculty of a top business school. I am not on the PhD committee, so I have no particular insights to share on the application process, but I would like to make a plea: All of the top few schools have groups or departments that focus on entrepreneurship and innovation, almost always within a larger management/strategy umbrella. We also don't receive nearly as many high-quality applicants as we would like. I assume this is because, as I can see on the boards, there seems to be a desire to pursue something like OB or Strategy directly. Those are great areas, and you should certainly go after them if that is what you want to do. However, if you have an active interest in entrepreneurship and innovation (especially if you have some experience with entrepreneurship or a background with some engineering or science), and a strong application, you really should consider applying to programs like: MIT's TIES Harvard's Entrepreneurship Department Wharton's Entrepreneurship Group Stanford MS&E for a PhD I know all of these groups are interested in high-quality candidates, and entrepreneurship remains a hot area in the job market. Sorry for the advertisement, and best of luck. Additionally: If you are interested in what sorts of things you might read and publish if you study entrepreneurship, here is an excellent (if somewhat economics-focused) reading list from the MIT PhD general exams from Prof. Chuck Eesley, now at Stanford
  6. I have worked 20 years before I got enrolled in the current MBA program that I am taking, because I want to switch to academia. Such a change has been really hard in China, my home country due to my age. I learn that programs abroad do not reject applications simply because of age issue. Here is my profile and hope you can help evaluate and give me suggestions as to which PhD programs to apply to. Any other advice is welcome. Target concentration: Entrepreneurship (I have 7 years entrepreneurial experience) GPA: undergrad. 3.36 (I doubt if it is meaningful for my case.), BA in English (not good?) MBA 86.5% so far (top 5%, my school refuse to convert into 4-point scale GPA) Publicatoins: one in Chinese with a local chinese journal in 2004 one in English, currently under peer review (SSCI journal but low-tiered) Honors: Semi-finalist in Global Business Plan Competition (UT Texas, 1st award for a mainland Chinese team. We got a slot from a feeding competition in the US); runner-up in DFJ-Cisco Global Business Plan competition. Ranked No. 1 out of the 900 applicants and honored the "best entrant scholarship". I took iBT with no previous preparation two days ago. I believe the results would be 90-100. I will take GMAT in two weeks, currently preparing for that. But mock exam results are barely 600 (Q47; V27). Please advise which programs you know may be suitable for me, considering that my poor scores in tests and old age. Thanks.
