  1. I have been admitted at the following unis: U Illinois UC U Arizona U New Mexico I also have really good chances with Colorado Boulder and Wyoming. I want to go into environmental and development economics. UIUC is definitely the best ranked uni in economics and it has a pretty good placement, while all the others are much more specialized in environmental and development econ, but seem to not fare just as well with placement (except Colorado). I'm thinking probably UIUC would give me the best chance to actually teach at any of those unis after the PhD and that a higher ranked uni is better in general for reputation, but on the other side those other unis do have a strong emphasis on the branches I like the most. Which one should I accept? Thanks to anyone willing to help! :)
  2. Letter of Intent I appreciate this opportunity to provide further background information in support of my application for Environmental Economics PhD Program in XXX. I believe that my educational background, work experience and deep interest in the chosen field of study make me a very good candidate for the program. I am very passionate about academics and research, and am also passionate about impacting society both near and far. As long as I remember myself I have always known that I want to study Economics and to be more specific its facets that concern Environmental issues. As a child I used to wait for the festival of lights, Diwali to come. We celebrate this festival with lots of sweets, lamps and new clothes. With time the way we celebrate the festival and for that matter any good occasion has changed. The celebration of this festival is considered incomplete without the use of plenty of firecrackers. Firecrackers primarily contain sulphur, carbon, added chemicals, barium nitrate, aluminium, copper, lithium and strontium. When these firecrackers are lit, these chemicals are released into the air, reducing air quality drastically. To make matters worse, Diwali usually takes place in October or November when many cities in northern India face fog. The gases released from the firecrackers are trapped in this fog and increase the level of pollution exponentially. The levels of pollution in the air rise astronomically during these days. During my growing years I wondered where did the polluted air go or is there a natural sink provided by mother earth. There were many unanswered questions which motivated me to read more on the subject. My eagerness to know more about the ecosystem, climate and natural resources led me to my master’s programme in Indian Institute of Forest Management. I consider myself fortunate to have trained under the guidance of highly experienced and prominent faculty Dr. Madhu Verma on Ecological Economics and Environmental Valuation. It exposed me to the harsh reality of what is at stake. We need to understand that there is an intimate connection between the economics of development and the cost of environment conservation. Heartening to see that Ecosystem Services fall outside the present configuration of markets, they remain un-priced, un-owned and unaccounted in economic terms. My graduate coursework provided me theoretical knowledge including economic models: methods, theory and application of tools used by companies in their holistic approach of life cycle assesment. The classes enriched my understanding of the actors' of environment conservation and sustainable development such as the government, organization and community. During this time I realized that our environment is slowly heading to the point of no return, and unless we do something about it. I gained insight into the environmental impacts of the future climate change and the economic repercussions it would follow. As part of the course curriculum I conducted a survey to understand the relationship between poverty and environmentalism by analyzing the responses of poor to their imminent neighbourhood environmental issues. It is during such visit that I realised the importance of creating awareness, inclusive growth, sustainable development and minimum emissions with minimal impact to environment. During my years in college, I have given talks on topics like Stern Review: The Economics of Climate Change, Silent Spring, Towards a Green Economy – Pathways to Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication, Forest carbon index and The BASF Eco-Efficiency Life Cycle Tool. During my study and field experience, I realized the importance of data analysis and number crunching, because we cannot control what we cannot measure. I felt that before going further on the way of academic research, it would be useful to get some experience on data analytics. Desire to learn analytics to support my research along with knowledge of environment and economy, landed me a job in one of the leading Microfinance Institute in bangalore. After completing my masters program, I joined the company where I am working as Market Risk Analyst. Working here has increased my ability to research, analyze and present key components for management's decision making process. My work typically involves qualitative analysis on the market risk and the liquidity risk of the firm. Some of my duties include data analysis, automation of reports, predictive modelling, presentations and sharing insights with the management team. During my free time I work on freely available environment related datasets to analyse and build model. I wish to use my data analysis skills to analyse the available data and build an efficient model that would give insight to environment problems and the solution that can have greater impact. I seek to contribute to the topic of climate reporting by answering key questions regarding the status quo of international climate change reporting regimes; comparing mandatory versus voluntary disclosure schemes and effect on reducing CO2 emissions; and analyzing investors' reaction to climate-related disclosures. Research at will reinforce my knowledge on environmental economics and put these concepts in practice to achieve . We have lots of data available on the change in land use pattern, carbon emission over years, change in forest cover over years, climate change over years and many related fields. To make an informed policy decision, we need to analyse these data, understand the future impact of the business-as-usual model and corrective measure to reduce these negative impact. I like to think myself as an adventure seeking enthusiastic person who is capable to rise up to any challenge. I have variety of interests which include painting, travelling, trekking and running. I now wish to continue my academic career with a PhD in Economics, and I cannot image a better place to perform my research than in the department of economics at the XXX of Economics. The prospect of studying and learning in XXX University which has a great blend of faculty and students from all over the world excites me. I realize the highly competitive demands of the program I am applying to and believe that my drive and passion for Environmental Studies will help me to excel in my future research. Thank You very much for considering my application and for your time!

  4. Hi, I am applying for Phd in environmental economics this year. Need help and support from this forum . Also i can help the people in this forum as much as possible.
  5. Hey guys! Im michael, and i'd like your input on what is maybe the best route for me given my very particular interests and lack of experience with the American Academic sector. So, i Hold a Bsc in Economics with a minor in natural resources from a very good Latin american University, with a grade average of 7.8/10. I basically worked full time and studied at the same time.. all in all 2 years in government and 3 in private sector. Quit, it alll to become research assistant on environmental economics research for 6 months. Worked some more, and later got a full scholarship from the Ecuadorian Government to do an MSc in environmental economics and climate change at the London School of Economics. Loved it. graduated with a merit... did well on my exams but didnt do as amazing on my thesis, given that we had a MASSIVE earthquake in ecuador and my data failed to come thru, but hey i still did well. Took modules on valuation, and ecosystem services in the global south, besides quantitative methods, environmental economics and natural resource economics and climate change economics. Came back to Ecuador late 2016! designed a short course for my undergrad uni which i taught on climate change economics and local issues - so a 2 months teaching experience. By jan 2017 i joined the Charles Darwin research station for the Galapagos Islands as an Environmental Economist, doing research into 2 projects, one of them very linked to my masters dissertation. Im still working with them. Sept 2017 i shared preliminary results at the IMPAC4 conference through an oral presentation (international marine protected areas conference) - its an environmental economics paper that i hope to have published by the end of the year Oct 2017 awarded Youth Leadership of the Americas Initiative professional fellowship by the U.S State department (YLAI) for a sustainability project i co-wrote. Currently placed at University of Illinois at Chicago at the great cities institute for a month, and ill give some guest lectures. Probably will also give a guest lecture at the New School in NY next month before heading back to Galapagos, Ecuador. I am interested in doing a Phd in the States, and my initial thought and focus has been Duke, their UPEP programme... altho im not sure if i should maybe look into Econ PhDs that have an envrionmental option.. i know UCSB and UCDavis are good, San Diego too.. and obviously Berkeley but thats agricultural/natural resource economics. What about Yale? What about Stanford and their E-IPER programme? or Columbia and their Sustainable development programme? those are interdisciplinary like UPEP at Duke. And then.. im also thinking of public policy programmes in either the Keneddy school or at Harris.. I haven't done the GRE but i will prepare for it. My TOEFL score is 114 out of 120 and that was before LSE, im planning on retaking because it will expire by the time i apply. Where should I aim at given your expertise? Straight econ with environmental econ as my path ? Agricultural/resource econ? or interdiciplicary like Duke, Columbia and Stanford? or Public policy oriented at very rigorous schools? Also, realistically what are my chances? I have a very specialized CV but i am unaware if it'll be well received in the U.S universities. All the Best, Michael
  6. Hello all. New to these forums. I am an undergrad (finishing my second year) at UVA pursuing a double major in Economics and Environmental Studies. I'm not sure if it's a bit too early to be looking into grad school, but I was wondering if anyone had some advice for me. I want to be a professor or researcher for my career, and I want to specialize in environmental economics. I am sure of this, but this is where my certainty ends. I don't know if I should be looking at graduate econ programs, graduate agric/resource econ programs, graduate environmental programs with specializations in econ (like the Nicholas School at Duke), or if I should but the brakes on and get a real job for a few years first. I am aware that there are a lot of threads on here about the distinction between ag/resource programs and general econ, but I'm still a bit unsure about how each one relates to enviro. Heck, I can't really figure out the difference between environmental and resource economics in the first place... Aside from the type of program I should be looking at, which specific programs would you all recommend, both as "dream" schools and as backups. How should I evaluate a graduate program? Their curriculum? Their general reputation? Their faculty, particularly in environmental economics? Or the research focuses and job placement of their Ph.d students? Lastly, what should I be doing to prepare. I know math is important, and I am pretty good with math, but here's my dilemma: as a double major, I don't have a ton of room to fit in every math class I want. I know I will graduate with single- and multivariable calc, probability, mathematical stats, linear, real analysis, and regression analysis. I have room for maybe two more math classes. What should I take? Diff. eq, topology, econometrics, linear models in statistics, advanced real analysis, mathematical economics, or something else? I am doing research here in the envisci department. I really enjoy it, but I'm not sure how helpful it is in getting into these programs. Should I switch gears and go for research in econ? I know I will be doing a thesis in econ my senior year, but maybe I should have something more... I would really appreciate the guidance.
