  1. Hello dear friends, I'm impressed because of the collaborative environment in this forum, that makes me feel that the world isn't selfish at all and that sharing and helping is one of the most important values for the success of society. By the way, I would be really greatfull if you guys can take a look at my essay which is done in the preparing stage for my toefl exam. :playful: Here it is: In contrast to the reading passage, which supports the idea of contamination as the cause for the decreasing of sea otter’s population in the northern of Alaska, the lecturer emphasizes on the point that the predator’s attacks are the main reason for such event. The passage explains that sea otter mortality’s rising is led by contamination produced by oil rigs operating in the zone, additionally, the pattern of mortality, which is characterized by a highly otter’s decreasing in some areas and almost nothing in another ones is because of marine currents which concentrates the contaminants in some regions and causing the death to mammals that lives there. On the other hand, the professor refutes this point by noting that the otter’s death in this way will cause dead bodies to get to the coast, which is not happening now. Professor states his hypothesis based on that the predators (like Orcas) are changing their diet mainly because of the difficulty to get whales in the zone, the principal food for them. This difficulty is led by the decreasing in whale’s population produced by the high levels of hunting executed by the human being. Thus, Orcas are killing otters and other little mammals in the absence of whales additionally, the patterns of those behaviors are concentrated in zones where the orcas have access and are uneven in inaccessible rocky areas. To summarize, according to the lecturer, otter’s population decreasing is led by Orca’s diet changes and is supported by these facts: no dead bodies at the coast, orca’s difficulty to get whales in the area and pattern of otter’s population higher in orca’s inaccessible areas. The professor’s ideas contrast and in some ways refutes the reading passage hypothesis of contamination.
  2. Hi, I was going through some independent essay writing questions. These questions ask us to take a stand of either for/against or choose an option among 2 options. I want to know if it is possible to take a neutral stand or write an answer containing mix of both options. For example, please see below question: If you were an employer, which kind of worker would you prefer to hire: an inexperienced worker at a lower salary or an experienced worker at a higher salary? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer. I would like to include points for both inexperienced and experienced workers. Each has its own merits in different situations. So, do I have to pick one over the other or can I include both in my answer? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Aparna
  3. Argument : Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been made only by the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found. Thus it follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean. The claims made by the statement that woven baskets with a distinctive pattern were previously found only in the immediate vicinity of the village of Palea. There has been, however, no information provided about the source of this fact and if the archaeological study that published this fact actually covered sites other than those of Palea and its vicinity. As a regression of this, the actual origin of the peculiar basket pattern might have been made a rather different city around Palea or was a distinctive pattern of the region rather than being a patron of Palea village. Moving forward in the argument, the argument states that a basket with the patterns which were assumed to a be a doctrine of Palea was found across the Brim river. As due to the size and magnanimity of the river allows it to be crossed only by boat and no trace of boats were found, the baskets should have been made somewhere on the other side of Brim river. This statement has major loopholes in the assumptions it makes.Firstly,as very evident in the passage itself, absence of archaeological evidence doesn't gurrantee the absence of an item as happened in the case of later discovery of basket in Lithos. Generalizing from specific results doesn't always turn out be a truth as happened in case of Palea village's association with the distinctive pattern. It is quite possible for Paleans to have boats in the prehistoric times which our archaeological geniuses have not been able to discover yet. Secondly, the fact that boats were not found is a recent truth after or during the Lithos site discovery mission or a subsumed fact in the Palea baskets is not clearly stated to understand if the fact is recent enough after the Lithos discovery to be relevant. On a different wavelength, as stated that the discovery of a single such basket in Lithos can be an indicator of the presence of more such basket but doesn't prove it. Drawing the conclusion that presence of one basket marks the existence of basket in the village is rather an extrapolation. This fact can be easily explained by the mention of the Brim river. The basket might have been floated across the river to reach Lithos from the Palean shore. The argument contains multiple assumptions which may weaken or strengthen the argument as has been elaborated above.
  4. Hello Everyone, I am in my second semester at my local JC. It has been many years since I have been in school. I am really struggling with the essay writing for English. I am taking English 100 online, in summer school for 4 units, as well as American History online, in summer school, for 3 units. To say I am overwhelmed would be a huge understatement. Any helpful hints, or better an ear to bounce my thoughts off of. :shy:
  5. People attend college or university for many different reasons ( for example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge). Why do you think people attend college or university? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. People have different reasons to attend college or university. From country to country, from family to family , and ultimately from individual to individual the incentives are various. Some people prefer to make friends at college. Others are looking for a life partner at the university. However, some people attend university or college to win a great scholarship. The majority of people need good friends, who always ready to help and give supportive advice in a difficult situation. It is impossible to find a good one in disco club, bar or casino, since those places just for fun and relaxing. The best places for making real friends are college and university, where many students intelligent, smart and helpful. Moreover, university and college is a wonderful place to find your life partner. Me and many of my friends found their husbands and wives there. In my opinion, it is not a surprise because most of the our student's time we spend in libraries with classmates or other students, who have the same interests and ideas. What could be more important in your life partner if not the same goals and plans for future? In addition, university and college gives to student a great opportunity to earn good money without working. Many people prefer studying at the university and win scholarships instead of doing a real job. Scholarships is a very good incentive for people to attend college. A lot of people prefer to attend university and college because it is a great place to find good friends and life partner. Furthermore, it is possible to earn money without working by winning scholarships at university.
  6. How does i develop the eassy writing ?
  7. i'm new to this forum, i have my exam in a week and struggling with the writing section, need an experts advice. vertical_horizon, vaya will you please analyze my essay and take the pain to give me feedback, your feedback is much appreciated [clap]. thank you i promise that will try to help others on this forum with their essay as well. topic: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Attending a live performance (for example, a play, concert, or sporting event) is more enjoyable than watching the same event on television. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion Personally I disagree with the statement that attending a live performance is more enjoyable than watching the same event for the following reasons First, location is very important factor for me, if I have to travel to a different state altogether I wouldn’t find it encouraging to attend the live concert .For example recently there was a Britney spears concert in London and I live in Coventry west midlands,uk. I chose to watch the concert on TV but my friend bill went to attend the live concert, bill was late to the concert and therefore couldn’t enjoy it really well ,also the temperatures were low ,so bill was down with common cold for next 4 days. While I really enjoyed watching the concert on tv in the warmth of my home. Second ,car parking is a big issue when you attend a live concert there is limited amount of car parking area sometimes and u have to face the music as a result. I usually drive my own car so finding a car-park will be a hassle for me at such events. Jane went to a concert with her friends ,since she couldn’t a car park as she was late for the concert, she parked her car in no park zone and didn’t notice the sign board as she was in a hurry to attend the concert, the end result was a fine of 100$ by the patrolling police. Third, these live concerts charge a lot of money per ticket, and a rocking performance is not always guaranteed as there are always uncertainties like a technical problem, drunken performer, or a show can be canceled at the last minute and this would leave you utterly disappointed. Instead I will watch it for free on television and save the money towards my future degree in fashion designing at the Paris institute of fashion technology in Paris. Moreover, event Management Company contributes a lot towards the success of the concert and this would result in ultimate satisfaction for the audience who attend the live show for example Cindy went to the Amy wine house concert. The ticket included food and drinks. Due to inefficient management by the organizer, the food wasn’t sufficient for all. Cindy fumed at this but could do nothing except for spending extra on the food as she was so hungry, so I would definitely avoid such a situation. In addition, hygiene matters the most for me when I go out with my family and friends. Whether it is a restaurant, park or for a holiday. At a live performance there will be very big crowd especially if its by a noted artist such as Jenifer Lopez, Britney spears etc , big crowd means lots of bacteria and the risk of contracting viral infections. Added to this if the concert is in open auditorium and the temperatures fall suddenly you’ll have to face the music and end up spending the next couple of days in the bed suffering with cold and fever. In conclusion, for the above explained reasons and details I would watch a concert on tv rather than attend the concert, as this would save my energy, health and money.
