  1. I have noticed that ETS does not keep consistent how it treats results of square roots. For example: Q: If (X+3)^2 = 225, which of the following could be the value of x-1? A: correct answer is -19 and the assumption is square root of 225 is both 15 and -15 Q2: Which is bigger between the two? squareroot(7) + squareroot(11) OR squareroot(3) + squareroot(15) A2: I thought the answer would be D as in the relationship cannot be figured out since any of the square roots can be a negative number and we do not know which is which Any thoughts on when to explore a negative answer to a square root problem v. when to not?
  2. Hello guys! ETS suggests some tips for people with a score of 19. It happens that I don't understand the meaning of two of them 1.-note the methods you use to support your ideas 2.-note what method you use to support each of your supporting points ETS Best Marco
  3. I have misspelled my name in TOEFL iBT account. I found about it when I gave exam yesterday. How can I now change it. I asked the people at center but they said it does not matter much. How should I change my name now. I think it will be problem if my name will not match at universities I am applying to. Please Help!!! Thanks, Hardik Bansal
  4. Hi everyone, first time posting at a forum... I was about to register for a GRE in November, but noticed that the name that I register must be the same as my primary identification documents. I wasn't able to change my GRE account name, so I emailed ETS for advice. They informed me that I must give them a test registration date/confirmation number for them to look into my account, so I (foolishly) registered (and paid) for the test, thinking that once I hand them the information they'll do something about it. Once I gave them the information, all they told me is that since I 'already' registered, there is nothing they can do and I can only get a partial refund. I called ETS customer service and explained that I registered for the test only because they said they need the registration information when I asked them to change my account name. Their customer service was absolutely horrid. The only difference with my account information and my primary ID is my given name, since my account is under my English name and my ID is under a Korean name. Everything else (last name, address, picture, etc) are the same. Will this be an issue at the testing center?
  5. ETS has announced that since the beginning of March 2013, the Listening and Speaking sections of the TOEFL iBT® test include other native-speaker English accents in addition to accents from North America. Test takers may hear accents from the United Kingdom, New Zealand or Australia. Visit TOEFL iBT Test Content for more information and to hear a sample listening passage.
  6. Hello everyone, Well so i really sucked at my first attempt at taking a GRE. could manage only Q:149 and V:150. I had limited time, about less then 2 weeks to prepare and referred only to publications by Barrons and ETS. So now i have decided to take a re-test, but this time around have a good 30 day thorough learning session. Since Im familiar with the test now, and the over-all course line, i dont need to start from scratch. Also, im keen to improve my maths score, if i will be too time crunch. And definately I'm not touching barrons at all, it gave me plenty of confidence though initially, but its questions (specially for maths) are not at all competitive. So it would be great if you guys can give me suggestion on the following : 1. Which materials apart from ETS-second addition should i use ? Specially to improve my Math section. 2. I have heard a lot about Mangoosh GRE 1 month subscription around the forums and otherwise while googling. Is it worth it ? 3. Where can i take maximum prep-tests. Cuz one of the problems during my exams was that I was constantly behind time and had to opt out so many questions, specially for the English part so that I get in the pace of things. Appreciate it, Kushan
  7. I am very interested in compiling a detailed article comparing and contrasting the style, content, and approach of the most widely used TOEFL Preparation books. I would to seek the help of my fellow TOEFL teachers on this forum. Could you provide any tidbit of information about any two (or more) TOEFL Prep books you have used and their related materials? I'll start by mentioning what I know: ETS Vs. Longman The ETS Official Guide is less detailed than the Longman Preparation Course. Teaching from the ETS Guide, I often need more examples of the question types to help introduce the idea, so I refer students to the Longman Book for a set of focused examples. I have found the Longman Book to be a bit impractical in some of the walkthroughs, like the note-taking skills for example. I can't imagine how anyone would have enough time to take notes the way they are introduced in the Longman book. The Longman Course takes 280 hours, according to the author, and I teach the ETS Guide in 80 hours. The Longman Course has been around for a while, and seems well edited, while the ETS Guide still contains a lot of typos and mistaken examples in its third printing. The ETS Guide offers official statistics about TOEFL test takers around the world, listing averages by gender, language, country, and even academic level. The Longman Course includes many helpful language appendices. My favorite is the cohesion activity, it is very helpful for students.
  8. From official guide page 56 Problem set-2:RC(easy) of verbal section q-1) A person who agrees to serve as mediator between two warring factions at the request of both abandons by so agreeing the right to take sides later. To take sides at later point would be to suggest that the earlier presumptive impartiality was a sham What does the passage emphasizes about mediator When I try to read first sentence I get a feeling that it is not constructed properly. Can anyone break the sentence in smaller parts? Especially clarify the usage "by so" I gave it a try myself [clap];) A person (who...abandons)2 (by...later)3 In this part-1 is adj type describing the person, part-3 is something like secondary act signified by 'ing' verb. I think it should be followed by main action word. Would also like to hear questions/answers from others preparing from ETS official material as I will be following it. [can anyone correct this last sentence for punctuation marks. I think there should be some break marks after 'others' and 'material']
  9. Hi Everyone, Noob here. Let me start by saying I love the forum, very helpful. I keep seeing old exams from ETS referenced on this forum. Where are these available? Also, is the modern material comparable to the material on the tests in the mid 90s? Thanks for the help, Kevin
