  1. What is the best ranking to use to compare European PhD programs? Ranking by record of graduates Economic Institution Rankings | IDEAS/RePEc or general ranking of departments Economics rankings: Economics Departments | IDEAS/RePEc or some other ranking? The discrepancy is quite large in many cases e.g. EUI Florence is 26th globally by record of graduates but 224th (!) on the standard ranking; LSE is 7th and 21st respectively; Barcelona GSE is 27th and 11th resp.; Mannheim 44th and 97th; Toulouse SE 55th and 10th.
  2. I am currently deciding between accepting a top 20 US PhD offer and some offers for top European master's. My ultimate goal is to do a PhD, and I am wondering as to whether it would be possible to be accepted to a top 10 US program after finishing a European master's. The main questions I have in this regard are: Do UK master's (LSE, UCL) offer the option to do RA work? (I believe that this would greatly improve my application, as I don't have RA experience in academia). If I start the master in Fall 2020, would it be possible to get some recommendation letters by the December 2020 application period? Or is it customary to finish the whole program before asking for recommendations? I would greatly appreciate any information in this regard!
  3. Type of Undergrad: BSc in International Economics at one of the best universities for economics in my home country Undergrad GPA: 3.9/4.0 (converted), top 5% of graduating class Type of Grad(s): double master's degree MRes (PhD track) in Economics and MSc in Quantitative Economics at three well-known universities in Europe (Barcelona and Paris) Grad GPA: 3.8/4.0 (among top 5 students) and 4.0/4.0 (with distinction, top of the class) GRE: V:161, Q:163, AWA: 4.5 Math Courses: mathematics for economics (covers basic calculus, real analysis, linear algebra, differential equations), statistics I-III, graduate optimization (programming, multivariable calculus), graduate probability theory (proof-based); many other required topics in math covered in (graduate level) econ classes, but do not explicitly show up on transcript Econ Courses (graduate level): micro I+II, macro I+II econometrics I+II, applied econometrics, advanced labor, urban and regional Econ, trade, advanced international macro; and many more in undergrad (including development, international, public econ etc.) Letters of Recommendation: very good (expected), one from my current RAship supervisor (well-known, works with professors from top US schools), one from my master thesis supervisor, all writers know me quite well and are top 5% researchers in economics according to IDEAS ranking Research Experience: current pre-doc full-time RA working on different projects in labor, IO and trade under supervision of well-known professor, master thesis with very good grade, published a co-authored article in an African central bank's journal, bachelor thesis with very good grade, one year part-time RA at an institute for applied economic research during undergrad Teaching Experience: TA in Math for Econ students in undergrad Research Interests: at the intersection of economic development, labor and IO, applied micro, with a focus on firm heterogeneity and firm behaviour in developing countries Other: internships at the UN and OECD, experience in international development cooperation, consultant for monitoring and evaluation I need your advice: 1) An obvious caveat in my application is my low GRE quant score. However, as it stands, I would like to know if I have any chances to get admitted to a top 20, top 30 or even top 50 school in the US? Put differently, to what extent can the rest of my application 'compensate'? 2) After my PhD, I am mainly interested in highly technical/research-related positions in international organizations, how do you think does a US PhD compare to one from a European program in terms of placement in Young Economist/Professional Programs at, say, the Worldbank? 3) Given my profile, goals and research interests, do you have any suggestions which programs to apply to? Any feedback is highly appreciated!
  4. Hello everyone, Could you please evaluate my profile and check if i’m not overestimating my chances? i have only done undergrad so far, and I’m also considering getting an European masters. Undergrad GPA: 3.35 (could go to 3.5) or 8.3/10 (standrised, Brazilian top-3 university), ranking in the 20% of cohort. R.A experience: With a professor that seems to like me enough to write me a good reference letter. Was top 2 in her class. Also another one for two years, that one in a group so maybe not a stellar letter but a good one. Recommendation letters: one from the R.A professor i mentioned, another one from my advisor (top 10 economists in my country, i believe could write a good letter). GRE: not yet, some schools don’t require it so I may give it a second thought. Awards: I think I can win a prize for the best thesis in undergrad. Considering applying to (Msc): Cambridge, Mannheim, BGSE, CEMFI, LSE, Bonn, UCLouvain, Tilburg, Toulouse, PSE and (maybe) Bocconi. I’m fine with doing my PhD from any of these unis (maybe not Bocconi), so I may continue after masters. Does anyone know if I’m aiming too high? Thanks in advance.

  6. Hi everyone, I’m considering applying to UCLouvain (Université Catholique de Louvain, not the british UCL, unfortunately) MSc in Economics (Research focus, to follow a PhD afterwards) bit I can’t seem to find any information on their website regarding the admission criteria, only that it says “DIRECT ENTRY” would be given to applicants whose bachelor degree is compatible with theirs on some courses. Does that mean it’s non-selective? I wonder because they are so well-ranked at RePec, I can’t imagine how a non-selective program would play off (first-come-first-serve maybe?). Has anyone previously applied there? How was it? If I get in, I’d be happy to follow their PhD afterwards, so if you have any info on their progression rate etc. it would help a great deal. Thanks!
  7. Hi everyone, I was recently talking to a professor at a top European school (they'd previously been at a top 10 US program) & they were commenting on how fast European business schools have developed in the last 5-10 years - which was part of the reason they decided to make the move back to Europe. Searching through this forum, I see a decent number of posts on European schools, but they all seem to be a bit dated (especially keeping in mind the above -- where things seem to be changing pretty quickly). So with that: I wanted start a bit of a "general" thread about doing a PhD in Europe. If you look at the top, say 2 or 3 schools in country in Europe (let's call it: UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Finland ... sorry if I left any out please mention), they have very competitive placement records, with the better schools in that lot placing fairly regularly within the US, and others placing at top schools around the world. -How do you think that the 10 best in Europe compare to the US (= to the top 25? 50? 75?) -What is everyone's experience? Perception? Thoughts? -Anyone want to chime in on specific tracks such as finance/accounting/management etc.
  8. Hi, Some background: I am a European student looking to apply for PhD in Economics. I have a European three year BSc in economics and mathematics, which is why I am applying for a masters program. I have (very) solid LOR's and good research experience. I'm open to PhD either in Europe or in the US (prefer US or UK). Interests: Microeconomics (public econ, pol econ, theory) and Finance (macro finance), but subject to change obviously. I have these choices for MSc so far: - Warwick MSc Economics (https://warwick.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/courses-2018/econmsc/) - Barcelona GSE MSc Finance (2nd choice, was rejected for Econ--though they are basically the same program) (Finance Program | Barcelona Graduate School of Economics) - Sciences Po Masters in Economics (http://www.sciencespo.fr/ecole-doctorale/en/content/master-s-economics) - Manchester MSc Financial econ (was a safety) Waiting for: - Paris School of Economics (APE Masters) - Dual degree QEM (Quantitative Economics) at Paris and Sciences-Po http://econ.sciences-po.fr/dual-degree-economics-and-quantitative-economics - Bologna LMEC I haven't taken the GRE, which is why I didn't apply to LSE and US masters. The GRE is only given once per year where I live, so I am planning to take it this summer/fall when I have moved to a bigger city for my MSc (where it's hopefully given more often). I asked my letter writers, and one recommended Sciences Po due to it being two years (I'd reach a higher level in the micro sequence), and they have some good names in micro (Robin etc.) The other one recommended Warwick. Cost of tuition is not an issue. I am a bit concerned about the one-year length, I would prefer the two-year courses but I'm open for feedback.
