  1. Hello everyone, I hope y'all are safe and healthy. I'm taking the GRE next week, and practicing the AWA section. 2. The professor give us some information that was completely averse to the reasons that mentioned in the lecture. The first reason was all about polar dinosaurs that live in the area that temperature fluctuate wildly according to season cycle. Some scientists don’t think in this way and believed that polar regions was no as rare as they are today and perhaps, dinosaurs migrate to warmer places in cold seasons or they might hibernate like other animals to get through cold seasons without much trouble. The passage mentioned that the special position of dinosaurs legs that enable them to move fast and run is a firm reason that they are endotherms. But professor believe that their legs was positioned underneath their body because dinosaurs are very heavy animals and these legs help them to move their huge body. Also, passage indicates that the presence of haversian canals is a good reason to categorize dinosaurs as endotherms, because all endotherm animals have this structure that allow the animal to grow quickly and continuously. But, recently scientists find another things in their bones called growth rings. This finding indicates that dinosaurs stop growing during colder periods of time and they just growing in special seasons.

  6. Topic:In an attempt to improve highway safety, Prunty County last year lowered its speed limit from 55 to 45 miles per hour on all county highways. But this effort has failed: the number of accidents has not decreased, and, based on reports by the highway patrol, many drivers are exceeding the speed limit. Prunty County should instead undertake the same kind of road improvement project that Butler County completed five years ago: increasing lane widths, resurfacing rough highways, and improving visibility at dangerous intersections. Today, major Butler County roads still have a 55 mph speed limit, yet there were 25 percent fewer reported accidents in Butler County this past year than there were five years ago. Question:Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument. My Response: The following argument is flawed for numerous reasons. There were many unwarranted assumptions made in argument. The below are the few main reasons for which the argument is found flawed. Main reason for the argument to be found flawed is assuming no improvement in highway safety by considering the number of accidents. Because the population of Prunty County might have grown very larger in mean time. Instead the ratio of number of accidents to the current population should be considered while making such comparisons. Another major reason find the argument flawed is assuming that the improvement project taken up Butler County would work for Prunty County. Because there could be numerous reasons behind improvement project being success in Butler County which might not be there in Prunty County like the people's behaviour and attitude in Butler County could different from that of people in Prunty County. Further changes like increasing lane widths, resurfacing rough roads and improving visibility might not be the only reasons behind the decrease of accident rates. There could be some other reasons like cops rules, and fine amounts might be different, Due to which people might get scared to cross speed limits. And that could be the reason for decrease of accident rates. Finally It was mentioned that there was 25 percent fewer reported accidents in Butler Count than there were five years ago. But the comparison made in Prunty County was within one year. So there is lot of difference in periods in which comparison is made. These are all the evidences required to weaken the reasons which show argument flawed. And also to strengthen the assumptions made in argument.
  7. Claim: In any field—business, politics, education, government—those in power should step down after five years. Reason: The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalisation through new leadership. Question: Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based. My Response: I totally agree with the claim that in any field- leader in power should step down after five years. And also feel the reason behind it is flawless. Definitely revitalisation is the best path for success in any field which only comes through new leaderships. For suppose if we have consider business field, The trends and requirements of the society changes with time, In 90's desktops were trend then comes laptops and now its smartphones. So to withstand with these change in trends, business organisations definitely need change in leaders. That is why big companies change their leaders periodically. They choose the new leader who can challenge the competitors with upcoming trends. So with change in leader there comes noticeable difference in companies standard. To state another reason, think about GRE preparation, People often suggest us to book the slot before starting preparation that is because, People generally take things seriously only when they are under time restrictions or stress. Similarly a political leader does his work with mush seriousness only when he kept under time restrictions. He will start his work from the day one hoping he could achieve all his aims and dreams within the allotted tenure. One other advantage of changing leadership is, If the leader in an evasive minded, we can preclude his corruptible decisions or rules at least after five years. So that people choose good leader for the next tenure. So it is a good rule that in any field- leader in power should step down after five years, so that the organisation will be in success path.
  8. Some people believe that government funding of the arts is necessary to ensure that the arts can flourish and be available to all people. Others believe that government funding of the arts threatens the integrity of the arts. Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented. Art has been the major critical part of the cultures from the beginning of very primitive societies, and it continued till today. If we look at the very first drawings on the big stones 10 thousand years old, and if we look at the drawings of modern painters we can see that there is very big similarities between these two, which are separated by huge amount of years - to create something beautiful. However, since years has passed number of things are different now than what it was used to be 10 thousands years ago. In today’s capitalist economy, money drives most of the thing and art is also part of this economy. For this reason, it is better that the governments fund the art, so in this money driven world the art would not fade away from our lives. First of all, like I mentioned earlier, in capitalist economy money, creativity and intelligence is the most powerful driving forces. And if we lack one of them we are not going to see any good result in the things we create. Just think about it, in todays advanced technology sky is the limit, and you can create whatever you can imagine. I think this is something amazing to have these kinds of tools. For example, by means of these technology photographers can shoot a photo or record a video of people skiing in big mountains, or producers can produce a music that the tones no one has ever heard before or movie makers can create something amazing that only exists in humans imagination and etc. This kind of technology needs money, and so, if supported by the government the artist can create things that were even unimaginable hundred years ago. Secondly, if government funds the art the more people will consider getting into this field as a future career. Today, compared to engineering or business departments art majors are not getting as much as pay. Since, people can not see good earning in this field they become reluctant to pursue a career in this field. For example, during my undergraduate year in University I knew a lot of people who were really interested in arts but choose to study something different in order to make a good living. By the time they graduated, they only engaged with arts as a hobby. Some were into short filmmaking, some playing guitar, some shooting photos, but none of them were serious about it since they did not see rewarding future in this field. If government supported funding for the arts, more people would be driven to this field, and this will only produce more beautiful art. Of course, some may argue that art should not be money driven or something based on money, it can hurt the integrity of art. They might be right to some extent but let’s do not forget that funding the art does not necessarily mean creating art based on money, or corrupting art with money. We can think of it as a means that facilitates the process of making art. Thus, funding the art will not only make it more beautiful and popular, but it will also make it a lot easier to be created if the funding used wisely and appropriately. In conclusion, despite the fact that funding the art by government is a little bit threat to the integrity of art, I think the art should be supported by the funds of government in today’s world because, if used wisely, funds will only contribute to arts by making it more attractive and dynamic. As I mentioned before, world change and things also change, may be a hundred year ago it would be inappropriate to fund the art by government, but today it is not definitely the same case, and who knows what future holds. It is not certain how the means of creating art will change, however, what is certain the art will be with us even hundred years from now. 665 Words
  9. Immigrants should be forced to learn the country's language. In my opinion it should be left up to an immigrant's wish whether they want to learn the country's language or not. Enforcement will hardly result in a positive result. In fact it will result in development of enmity for the country in immigrants' heart as well as the world. And the country will see a few immigrants. I am an Indian and my native is the northern part of the country where Hindi is prevalent. Recently i got shifted to Chennai, a metropolitan city situated in the South India. Here the regional language is Tamil and people hardly know Hindi. Although English is a universal language but the blue collar people mostly use Tamil and don't know either Hindi or English. In such scenario, similar to as if I have migrated to a new nation, it is a daunting task to communicate. The only option left with me was to start learning Tamil as I have to stay here for long time. So it was my free will that I will learn the regional language. If I would have known that I have to learn Tamil forcefully if I want to live in Chennai, I wouldn't have gone to Chennai! One of my friend recently migrated to Germany where knowing German is must. The German embassy helps the immigrants to learn German and he was helped too. But he felt that Hitler's tyranny still prevails. Despite people know English there, they ask you to learn German! Although he learned German but along with that he also developed mild hatred for the country. He asked me not to visit the country unless you know German. Above examples are sufficient to sum up that immigrants should not be forced to learn the country's language. In fact they must be given friendly environment to grow and help their country to flourish.

  11. Question: Some students enjoy taking distance-learning courses on the computer or television. Other students would rather tall of their courses with a teacher in a classroom. Which of these options do you think is better? Use specific reasons and examples in support of your opinion. My writing: Nowadays, a lot of distance-learning courses are offered on the Internet which attract many learners in different parts of the world. On the other hand, some people prefer the traditional ways of learning in classroom settings. I like the former, as it has many advantages that the traditional way of learning does not have. First, it is much more convenient and flexible to learn from taking a distance-learning course than to go and learn in a classroom. We can access to the online course with just a few clicks on our computer, and we can decide to view the lecture or tutorial videos whenever we like. On the contrary, we are required to go to a specific place at a specific time if we enroll in the traditional courses with teachers in classrooms. The time schedule may clash with other courses or our own schedule. In addition, if we miss some important points when viewing the lecture video, we can just pause the video and go back to the previous parts - something we cannot do in a classroom. Second, distance-learning courses offer more choices than traditional courses. We can have access to all the courses provided by different institutions across the globe. We can study physics with MIT Prof. Walter Lewin, or we can take other courses taught by renowned professors and teachers. But very often, we are only limited to specific choices of courses provided by our schools or community if we take the traditional courses. The courses that we would like to take may not be available, or the instructors may not suit our learning style or habit. Fortunately, all these problems can be solved by taking distance-learning courses as there are so many options available. It is unlikely that not a single course or instructor from all over the world appeals to us. Some people are concerned about the lack of interaction among students and teachers in distance-learning courses. However, this is not true. There are discussion forums in the course homepage and students can engage in discussions on the lastest materials covered, learning tips, assignment, etc. Sometimes, there are even video conference so that you can talk to the instructors or other students using your web-cam. The number of students who enroll in distance-learning courses is also higher than that of traditional classes, so there can be hundreds, thousands or even more learners who accompany you. The interaction will not be less than that of a classroom, especially when the class is small with only ten or twenty students. Distance-learning courses are becoming a trend because many features and advantages that are not found in traditional classes can be found in these convenient and flexible courses. As long as we adapt to this new mode of learning, we can definitely gain more than we have ever imagined. Any comments regarding the language, grammar, content, organization? And can someone give me an estimate score? thanks
  12. Topic: Educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers.Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. My Essay: Educational institutions undoubtedly play the most crucial role in shaping a student’s career. They must serve the roles of imparting proper education to its students along with serving as a guide/counselor guiding students towards proper career that “adheres to their interests”. Thus, the educational institutions must bolster encouraging their students to pursue those fields of study that actively suits the students’ interests. Taking myself and my friends as an example, it’s not very uncommon for a student - as a fresher to an institution- to be unaware of the scope and prospects that his/her career-discipline has in the current market .Here, educational institutions can play the role as a guide/counselor by enlightening the students on the scope and prospect of various fields of study. This is because an institution ideally has an invaluable source of experienced professors, alumnis in diversified careers and placement cells which can help a student gain insight on how prospective his/her career is moving forward in the current job-market scenario. Thus, students can choose their fields of study evaluating both their interests and the “career prospects” in their field. Also worth mentioning, the educational institution serves as a production-house of talented professionals in different walks of life who collectively are responsible to run the nation. To add to this, a nation for its holistic growth requires engineers, doctors, politicians, artists etc. It is required that an equilibrium is maintained among all the professions, instead of any particular set of professions getting saturated; thus, leaving other professions deficient in no of workforce. To put forth an apt example, according to latest media reports, there is huge deficiency of talented professionals in STEM branch in US which in-turn is affecting the growth of IT sector. Only if educational institutions puts in more effort in making its students aware on how much prospective the IT sector - in terms of number of jobs and opportunities-then in coming years we can surely expect to see the US IT sector flourishing with many professionals in STEM field. However, one must not forget that when it comes to choosing career there is clear classification of people into two types-those who choose a study-discipline based solely on their interest and those who choose solely based on career prospects in terms of job prospects. Keeping this in mind, educational institutions should try to encourage students in choosing a particular field of study “only by enlightening them about the career prospects “ and “must not try to enforce any field of study upon them” .If institutions try to enforce any career discipline on students, it will only be producing quantity of students in any particular field and not quality. To summarize, an educational institution must serve its role as a guide/counselor by encouraging students to select their field of studies by providing ample information on the career options available In that field .
  13. Think carefully about the tissue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below. “Everyone makes hundreds of simple, spontaneous decisions daily. When the issues are not morally complex and the stakes are small, our normal instincts are sufficient. The problem comes when we don’t distinguish between minor and potentially major issues that demand a much more careful approach. But even with significant consideration, it can be very difficult to choose between two options that seem equally valuable.” Adapted from Michael Josephson, Making Ethical Decisions Assignment: What two options are the most difficult to choose between? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations. Everyone of us needs to make tons of decisions throughout our lives. Most of the decisions are easy to make, while a few of them require much more careful considerations. Choosing the university major is definitely the hardest decision to make, as very often people are faced with two options – the major that interests them but provides a less bright future, and the one that has a better future prospect yet is less interesting. The reasons for this are that people are concerned about money, social status and their own abilities. First, the major that we are interested in may require a larger sum of tuition but less financially rewarding in the long term than other option. Consider my own situation, I was wondering whether to study biochemistry or medicine (which is offered as an undergraduate course in my country) during my college application. Becoming a scientist and conducting research is my childhood dream, but being a doctor can enjoy a higher job security and salary. Besides, to study science in the best place in the world – the US, requires more than $50k a year, which is a couple times more expensive than to study medicine. This sad reality makes me wonder if I should pursue my dream as a scientist. Second, one option of college major may lead to a career that has a higher social status than the one people really interested in. Take studying law and literature as an example, the former is usually more respected by people, because professionals are usually perceived to be more successful. Those who study literature might be looked down by society, unless they become Nobel Laureates in the future. Given the potential low social status, people may find it hard to decide whether to do the things they enjoy or go and seek a higher social status, which is the concern of many people. Third, people may be uncertain of their abilities in more advanced study if they choose the major they are interested in. What we study in high schools is just introductory stuff, while the materials covered in college or even grad schools may require more natural talent. For instance, students who become fascinated by physics and aspire to become physicists after studying Newton’s Laws in high school may re-consider their ambitions again after they discover that many undergraduates fail to comprehend the more advanced theories in college. They doubt their own abilities may not be sufficient to handle the major they really like. Most people are told to choose the fields that are interested and passionate to study, but in reality the decision does not depend on one’s interests only. Therefore, when faced with the options of interests versus future prospects when applying for college, many people find that making the appropriate decision, which can have profound impacts on their latter lives, very difficult.
  14. “We can’t stop kids from drinking, so why don’t we just lower the drinking age back down to 18? They are adults for all other purposes. Eighteen year-olds can vote, smoke, marry, drive, fly, pay taxes, take out loans, hold public office, serve on a jury and fight for their country,, so what’s the big deal? Let’s stop spending all this tax money and law enforcement officer time fighting a losing battle!” This sentiment is the most said by those who want to lower the alcohol-consuming age to 18 based on my research. In fact, many of those are parents that grew up in an era when they were authorized to drink 3.2% beer when they were 18. Why did that change and should they change it back? Some believe that by allowing 18s to consume alcohol would mitigate the youthful desire for it as the "forbidden fruit." Before I discuss why the drinking age should stay as it is, I would like discuss the data compiled by me of how the current law in the USA came to be in brief. After Prohibition was repealed in 1933, the decision as to what the legal drinking age should be was left up to each individual state in the USA. As part of the war protests of the 1960’s, youth started pushing for a lowered voting age. “Old Enough to Fight…Old Enough to Vote” were popular stickers of the era. Until 1970, the minimum drinking age in most states was 21. However, in 1971, the voting age started to be lowered around the USA which led the drinking age to be lowered too. Between 1970 and 1976, 21 states reduced the minimum drinking age to 18. Another 8 reduced it to 19 or 20. However, these states immediately noticed sharp increases in alcohol-related fatalities and accidents among teenagers and young adults. As a result, out of the 29 states that had lowered their drinking age, 24 raised the age again between 1976 and 1984. By 1984, only three states allowed 18-year-olds to drink all types of alcoholic liquor. The others adopted some sort of stair-step age requirement based on the type of liquor being consumed. (Koroknay-Palicz, 2000) Health and body The drinking age in America should remain 21, because the human brain continues to develop between the ages of 18 and 21. Studies have shown that the human brain continues to develop past the age of twenty, mostly at the age of 25. People should wait until they are sure that they have the capacity to make proper life decisions, before they are permitted to drink alcohol. Underage drinking can be dangerous, as people may not yet fully understand the consequences of their actions. Drinking at a young age damages the learning and the memorization process in the brain. Every time you drink, part of your brain is impaired. Alcohol's stimulating effects are replaced by an anesthetic effect that causes depression, and when teens are depressed, they may commit a crime, or even suicide. Nevertheless, Alcohol impairs judgment and heightens risk-taking behavior as well as slowing perceptual and motor skills, so given to a person who has an immature brain function in these areas already, the effects of consuming alcohol may even be more exaggerated. And finally, alcohol or drug use during these formative years can cause long term, irreversible damage to the brain and its nerve cells. By performing more than 500 different functions, the liver is essential to our health. Its primary role is to filter all the blood in our bodies by breaking down and eliminating toxins and storing excess blood sugar. It also produces enzymes that break down fats, manufactures proteins that regulate blood clotting, and stores a number of essential vitamins and minerals. All told, the liver keeps us alive by enabling us to digest food, absorb nutrients, control infections, and get rid of toxic substances in our bodies. Drinking excessively causes the liver to accumulate fat and become inflamed which might lead to hepatitis. It also leads to cirrhosis, a condition in which liver cells are so damaged they cannot regenerate, and liver failure. Long-term drinkers are more likely to get certain types of cancer, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. Alcohol consumption has been associated with higher risks of cancer of the head and neck, stomach and breasts. Alcohol can also harm the pancreas, causing a severely painful condition called pancreatitis. Roads Lowering the drinking age to 18 would stop infantilizing college students, but it would probably kill more of them in traffic accidents as pros would say. In 2006, 2,121 people ages 16 to 20 died in alcohol-related fatalities on U.S. roads, according to data compiled by me from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it also states that drunk drivers kill someone every 53 minutes. According to a review of literature published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, author Ralph Hingson cites several studies on the issue done in the 70s and 80s. In 1971, some states did try and lower the drinking age to 18 as mentioned before, and in the years following had an increase in fatalities from alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents. These numbers declined after 1988, by which time most of the states had raised the minimum age back to 21. If the drinking age is lowered, then there will be more people dying quicker than there is now. Additionally, if a sixteen year old is permitted to drive a car in most jurisdictions, imagine what a dangerous situation could result on the roads if he/she is also permitted to buy alcohol and does not yet have the maturity to comprehend the consequences of drinking and driving. High school students There is no compelling reason to lower age restrictions associated with the purchase of alcohol. Let's not forget that these laws aim to prevent teens and children from going into a store and purchasing alcohol, or buying it in a bar. Parents and guardians, however, can still offer their children a drink during special occasions or with dinner, if they wish to do so. Purchasing alcohol takes a lot of maturity and a sense of responsibility. When teens start drinking at an early age, their younger siblings are subjected to drinking earlier because they follow in the siblings' footsteps. An article by Robert Voas and James C. Fell also argues that lowering the drinking age to 18 will have too many unintended consequences. Aside from increasing motor vehicle accidents again, they claim that this will make it easier for the even younger, for example high school students, to obtain alcohol from their 18 year old peers. Many activities have ages of initiation. A person must wait until age 16 to start driving (according to the USA law), age 18 to marry without parental consent, age 35 to become president, and so on. The age limit for alcohol is based on researches which show that young people react differently to alcohol. Teens get drunk twice as fast as adults and have more trouble knowing when to stop. Teens naturally overdo it. 18 year olds are not mature enough to understand the damage alcohol can cause. They are still teenagers and proved incapable of handling the effects of consuming alcohol. Drinking is one of the main reasons 16-18 year olds females are getting pregnant. These kids, saying that they are old enough for alcohol, are just immature. Teenagers are preoccupied with issues of identity and social relationships. In this formative period, they experiment with different styles of clothing and makeup, try out unique variations of their names and may hang out with different social group at school. Peer pressure becomes a big factor in the choices that a teen makes as he or she develops socially; that’s why it is crucial that parents get to know their children’s friends and their families. For a lot of teens, alcohol may seem like a magic elixir that allows them to overcome shyness and social insecurity. But after awhile, those teens, who drink heavily on a regular basis, will start to get a negative reputation at school. Kids who participate in sports, musical activities or school clubs will often avoid the teenagers who party all the time. In conclusion, the negative effects of lowering minimum drinking age to 18 can be tremendous. It has not only short-term and long-term damage to one’s physical and social health, but also causes more alcohol-related fatalities, accidents and injuries. As a result, drinking age should not be lowered to 18 and the government should increase enforcement of underage drinking laws and provide more education about the harmful effects of alcohol abuse because it seems like many people are still not aware of them. Thanks, it is my first thread, any comment is appreciated.
