  1. I had a really positive interview with a program that was towards the top of my list (the program was already potentially my top choice) and afterwards, the PhD coordinator suggested I reach out to some current students to find out more about the program. I did, and it was all positive. Now I am convinced that this is for sure where I want to be. I want to communicate that I reached out and this is where I want to be. To complicate things, I'm currently at a stage where I have the opportunity to do a flyout that would be #2 to this school's #1, but they want me to book travel in the next week or so. I think the first school is going to make it's decisions in the next week, so I don't want to seem weird or pushy. Would there be anything wrong with writing the PhD coordinator back to say "I reached out to everyone you suggested, they really love the program. I thought it seemed like a good fit before, now I'm sure this is my top choice. By the way, I've been asked to book travel for a flyout within the next week for (#2 school), but if presented with both options, I'd choose your program. I'd like to be fair to them, and not accept the flyout if you accept me." FWIW, the #1 program does seem to emphasize "fit" and "closeness". (All true, if given the offer here, I would accept it over other offers/the #2 school)
  2. Simple question (I hope). I had an interview (really positive) that culminated in the program coordinator suggesting that I talk to some current students and that I should reach out if I have any questions or anything comes up. This was already one of my top choices, and having spoken to several people, it's officially where I want to be. I have another flyout in a few weeks where we were given a budget, and if possible, I'd like to save that other school the time and expense if I am going to get an offer from the first school. I don't think they've made final decisions yet, but he seemed to indicate that they were targeting next week. I'd like to reach out to say "I spoke with several people you suggested, they said incredible things, and I am sure this is where I want to be. I have this other flyout, but I like your school better and would like to attend" (and mean it--if offered, I would accept). My question is whether that will be perceived as enthusiastic or weird? At a minimum, I'd like to let them know that I reached out, and everyone had good things to say...is that considered normal? This process baffles me a little bit.
  3. Hey guys, I am flying out to New York. I have created a list. Any specific suggestions what I should be carrying with myself? I am an Asian, and flying to usa for the first time. Will it be too cold in New York during first week of March? Thanks. Regard Current list: Shirt, Jeans, Shoes, Handkerchief Coat Tie Overcoat (cold?) Pen International Simcard Currency Shaving Kit Visa + Passport
  4. Hey guys, A school has invited me for a flyout and I am super excited about it. However, I am only partial funded. Given that I am an international applicant, the extra expenses which I will bear is going to be a lot for my wallet! I hear that most of the time, international applicants pool together the funds from various schools to cover their expenses. Problem is that currently I have fly out only from one school. I have been interviewed by 6 other schools, and yet to receive any information on my candidacy from them. Can I send an email to those schools politely stating that I am visiting school X on date Y. Given that I am visiting USA, if I am in the consideration and the school would like me to flyout to their school, it would be great if they can let me know. Does it make sense, or do I come across as a rude person? I hope that I am not obliged to accept an offer from a school after flyout. School X asked me and I told them very politely that the school is one of my top choices, however, there are few other schools who are also in my top choices, and if I get offers from them, then it would be a difficult choice for me to make. Thanks for your responses in advance. Regards Hummingbird
  5. I thought it would be nice to have a thread for people considering UC Davis for Fall 2013. Is anyone else going to the flyout on April 5th?
  6. Hi, Did anybody attend either flyouts to Wisconsin Madison or Michigan? I wasn't able to make it due to schedule conflicts. Could you share your impressions? It would be a great help for those who weren't able to attend. Thanks in advance :)
  7. I just finished the UCSD flyout and wanted to start a thread for attendees to post their impressions and things they learned. Here are some of mine: 1) There was an impressively cooperative/colleagial atmosphere, both among students and between students and profs. 2) They have really expanded their development program in recent years, both in dedicated faculty and other faculty with development interests. 3) No one seemed overly down about the financial health of the department or the ability to keep junior or senior faculty. 4) I think overall attrition is about 1/3 (if anyone has better info, please correct!), but across the board people said it was really never due to failed comps. Apparently most people pass by the second try, but they are very accommodating of people who want to continue. 5) Development, environment, and conflict seem to be some of the better-funded topics at the moment (I'm sure there are others, but these are the ones I heard about). There are also options for working with profs at Rady and IRPS. 6) They are working on a placement list that shows the primary and additional fields associated with placements. 7) There is probably some room to negotiate funding if you present your other offers. 8) Grad students said that TA work is generally light, especially for 1st years, and most thought the stipend is livable. 9) The grad student housing most available is the furnished "single grad housing" on campus or 1 Miramar nearby. The others seem to have long waits. Most students live in grad student housing their first year. 10) Two of my favorite presentations were Berman and Andreoni. I left wanting to do behavioral lab work and conflict. :) 11) They said there is a fairly even split between people taking five and six years to finish. 12) There's obviously a major selection issue with which grad students show up for recruitment activities, but everyone I talked to seemed really happy with the program. And the weather, of course. I'll add more as it comes to mind, and hopefully others will add more substantial comments on research and profs they talked to.
